saturday in the park

last weekend i took some photos of a couple who are expecting their first baby.
we walked across the street to prospect park, my favorite park ever.
i had no idea what i was doing (as usual) but a few of them came out cute.
they said i could share a couple with you.

here i am bossing them around.

this is my breakfast.
it's yukon gold potatoes sauteed with some red onion.
that's the raw yellow pepper puree i made the night before.

that mixed with the potatoes...heaven, if you're a potato kind of person like me.
also, that is a slice of ezekiel cinnamon raisin toast for all you inquiring minds out there.

have a fabo sunday.

  1. That's such a great picture with the name blocks curving over her belly.
Potatoes? Yes please, I have a dish of onions and potatoes just ten minutes away from the table, it's really cold today and we've been working out in the garden, time to get cosy now.

p.s. When I was pregnant, I would wear 3 -4 inch heels to take the pressure off my hip joints.
People thought I was crazy, but with out the heels I could barely walk.

  7. Prospect Park is lovely and the photograph of the kissing couple is charming.

It's nice to think this young couple is vegan but if they aren't, perhaps they'll have a child who develops a passion for animals and the environment at an early age as Olivia Brinfield has done.

7 year old Olivia Binfield's poem for Britain's Got Talent

    Endangered Animals

Come on don't you have a heart?

You don't want these animals to depart ?

Forget the x factor and the top ten singing chart,

What about the endangered animals and the poison dart.

The arnour leopard, the Siberian tiger and polar bear ,

They are so gorgeous, it is just not fair.

If I say their Latin name, will you listen more ?

Oh Louis please don't say this is a bore.

Varanus komodenis, komodo dragon by the way.

Why does man have to take them all away?

Man you are such a fool.

Snakes killed alive for handbags that is just not cool.

Please listen to my passion, although it may not be in fashion.

I can not sing it, you might laugh,

I can not dance, you would say I was daft.

    But I am seven

And I want these animals to last!!

    1. 7 year old Olivia could not be cuter. How wonderful she is speaking out for animals. Thanks for posting that.

This video-below- is about how plant protein is protective. It's interesting and reminds me that Colin Campbell told us almost 8 years ago that a similar relationship between animal and plant protein exists in relation to cancer.

This is more reason to avoid animal protein.

    2. Dr. Greger's protein and heart disease video is interesting. Thanks for posting it, Shell. It's a good thing to send along to those who ask, "Where do you get your protein?"

  11. cute couple . . .ah young love.......
Janet I love your breakfast. Potatoes are wonderful and do not make us gain weight.
We have all been taught that potatoes and rice will make us fat. they won't. it's the fat that makes us fat!
if we we put fat ON potatoes and rice
then yes, that fat will make us fat. dr mc dougall says "the fat you eat is the fat you wear".
if you leave off the butter, sour cream, cheese & gravy potatoes are healthy!
Potatoes are so satisfying and healthy for us.

Yesterday i had a green smoothie and half a slice of whole wheat
toast with almond butter and ginger tea [ breakfast ] and then later
rice & lentils with mixed veggies & half a potatoe & a small salad [ lunch ] . For dinner I had 2 yukon potatoes with bbq sauce & salad.

Humans crave starches. They always have and always will. Ways of eating that deprive them of starch will leave them unsatisfied.
Here is a vegan version of General Tso's Sauce. It's kind of spicy/tangy/sweet and
great on potatoes & rice. Trader Joe's sells a General Tso sauce but it has oyster sauce in it.

    3 tablespoons soy sauce
    3 tablespoons sugar
    2 tablespoons rice wine
1 1/2 tablespoons rice wine vinegar
    1 tablespoon chili paste
    1 1/2 teaspoons cornstarch

    Directions:

    1
Mix all ingredients in a saute pan.
    2
Cook at medium temperature until thickened, stirring occasionally.

  12. You are quite the photographer...no idea as to what you are doing??? I think not...you rock! Cute photos! :)

The breakfast looks tasty...funny when I first looked at your post on the eggplant napoleons I thought the yellow pepper was polenta!

  15. Janet, how I love all that you offer us. My question is, how is Larry with all this. Did he come on board, or do you fix something different for him, or does he fix something for himself, namely steak and fries with every meal. I know my man would, when all I want is veggies and fruit and beans. The picture of mushrooms and asp and mashed pots...all he saw was a steak under the mushrooms. I hope to sway him, in a nice way of course, but how do you work this.

    1. First of all she doesn't ride me on the issue and as the days go by I'm slowly converting. That is huge. I really don't want to be criticized about what I'm eating. I do eat most of what Janet makes and really like it. If I don't feel like having what she has conjured up then I'll get something out (Macaroni Grills pepperoni pizza is my go to meal). Burgers and steaks have been a real weakness for me BUT as time goes by it's become less of an issue. Vegan meals have much more flavor and I feel much better than I do after ingesting a pound of meat. Like most carnivores it's something I have been doing my whole life and change is hard - even if it's good for me. But I am working on becoming a full on vegan. It's a job in progress.

Also, I have it easier than most. Janet is a chef and does all of the cooking/chopping/meal planning. Cooking is a lot of work and without her cooking I would struggle.

  16. Maybe someone has commented on this already, if so sorry to repeat, but if not....I just wonder how you stay so slim and trim eating potatoes and bread? I love both...but somehow my scale climbs up higher if I indulge. Please share. Thanks.

  17. Janet,
Sometimes, I just see you as living the gardener's cottage life, but I know you venture out to the real world. The one away from your closet and down your driveway.
I love how you meld your life with pops of pop culture, food, fashion, photography and parks.
    You are the boss.
Yes, I don;t think I could wear those pumps pregnant and non pregnant too. I will wear those boots though.
