my fall porch

Hello sweet friends.  Yesterday I gave the porch a good cleaning and swapped my summery look for this cold weather look.  This little spot gets quite dusty and spiders love it here.

I always start by knocking down the webs and cleaning the windows.  Then move on to the floor and give it a good scrub.  If I have to, I will touch up the stripes but I didn't need to do it this time.  Then I decide which combination of blankets and pillows I will use.

I settled on this wool horse blanket that was like 50 cents at an estate sale and a pillow with that Nob Hill pattern from Pottery Barn from years ago.

If I ever had to move from this place, I'd miss this porch the most because I use it daily.  I love sitting here and reading a book,  magazine or even my laptop.  The birds and squirrels forget I'm here and wander in and then are so startled if I move.  It's just another little thing I love about my home.  x

Do you have a special spot in your home that's just for you?

  1. Your porch is charming. I can see why you use it so much. I love our front porch too and enjoy taking my tea a book and my knitting out there in the warm weather. Ours is quite open so it’s only a fair weather spot to sit...yours looks more sheltered and protected with the windows.
I’ve added some zinc pots with white mums near our front door but that’s about it as I will be off on my trip this coming week.
    Take care Janet.

  3. It's so darn cute! I'd love to have coffee out there in the morning, even if I had to wrap myself in that plaid throw to keep warm.

  4. Janet, I would be fighting the spiders for that sweet porch. I like that nice spot, it seems so cozy. It is good to sit outside and enjoy a bit of breeze and hear nature's sounds. Blessings, xoxo, Susie

  5. I have a porch too, and am always sad when it's time to abandon it for the long Minnesota winter. As of now, I still have a little while yet to sit out there with coffee and blanket, and enjoy your blog!

  6. Your porch looks so cozy, if it were mine I'd hang out there all the time.
I remember a reader once had a go at you for tearing the cover off a book! Was it To Kill a Mockingbird?

  7. My soon to be ex moved out about 6 weeks ago leaving the sunroom empty of his office furniture. I am in the process of turning it into my sewing room! I've waited a long time to have a dedicated room where I can leave a project and not have to put it away to clear a dining table.

  8. I love the fabric on that throw pillow. I would really like to have a porch. We do have a seating area out front which is shaded from a huge red maple tree, but it doesn't have quite the privacy nor the shelter of a porch. My own space at home, though, is my sewing room. I wish I could say I have it in just the order I'd like it, but I cannot. Sometimes it turns into rather a catchall space.

  9. We are currently renovating a previously enclosed porch into an actual four season space. I am thinking it will be our favorite space in our home. On cold winter days, the sunshine will be wonderful. To kill a mockingbird is my all time favorite book. One of very few I reread. It finally feels like fall today in the Midwest, which is quite nice. I very much enjoy your posts. Always uplifting!

  10. What a charming porch. We have a nice deck, but I rarely sit there. It gets the very hot afternoon sun, and mosquitoes unfortunately. It's nice that you have a lovely place to sit with a cup of tea and a book. I would love to knit there as well.

I really enjoy your posts and reader comments. Brings some joy and beauty to the day. Thanks.

  11. Janet, I have been enjoying your blog for 10 years and I have never commented. But it's time to do so. I would check in daily, as I know many readers did, to see how you and Larry were doing. You are so strong and inspirational. I've had a difficult year and I just want you to know how comforting your words, thoughts & ideas are to me. I haven't read your posts in a few weeks... so I binged on them this morning while drinking my coffee. I loved them!!! I especially loved your posts about your daily routine. Our routines help us when all else is upside down. Your posts helped me remember that. I worked in my garden all day today and then I enjoyed a soothing bath. Please know how much your blog is appreciated. My inner crone gets it too. Thank you.

  13. Have always loved your porch, Janet & can understand that it is a special place of serenity for you! We love our home in Hunt. Beach & I have two special places: our small patio off our kitchen which is styled with hunter green chairs & Bosporous Toile pillows & ottoman. This is where our "white" garden is & also where we feed hummingbirds & squirrels so I know what you mean about their getting startled when they see us move! Another favorite spot is an area of our backyard, with chaise lounges, umbrellas shading the sun & lots of topiaries & boxwoods. I play our Songbird Magnet recording & am in heaven! Sending you love & hugs. Katie

  14. Janet, your porch reminds me of my neighbor's porch. Sometimes when Tony walks our dog late in the evening, he sees her on the porch snuggled up with a blanket, a book and her dog Honey by her feet. So sweet! Hopefully some day that will be you with your new dog! :o)

  18. As many others commented, I too have always loved your porch. It's always charming regardless of how you have it decorated. I especially love the plaid wool blanket with the floral pillow...just the perfect complement.

My cabin has both a front & back porch, although they are very shallow...7' I think, & they are long. My back porch is divided into open & screened & that area sits high due to a walkout basement. It overlooks the creek, which is my favorite view. There's a farm way over on the other side, but I can't see it in the summer. It is my retreat at the end of a day in the gardens...I shower, grab my Kindle & a glass of wine. My newest adopted Lab, Ruger, is hot on my heels & loves it as well.

In the winter my retreat is my library. It would have been a bedroom before, but I called it a library even before I actually turned it into one. I don't like the term office for my home. My son built a wall of bookshelves, with a faux fireplace. On the shelves in the library I only have antique books, so to me it is a lot like artwork because I love books. I have plenty of other books, but they are stored in cupboards. Both my screened porch & library feel cozy & relaxing to me. My animals are with me regardless of where I choose to relax.

I love nature & the porch gives me a window into the woods around the creek...I have seen a bear across the creek, herons & various ducks are frequent visitors, along with lots of birds. It's my piece of heaven on earth. I think we all need a spot to relax & try to forget life's problems if at all possible. Or at least be able to put them into perspective. Tiny spaces are often the most charming, such as your darling porch.

  19. I, too, have a sheltered porch. We call it the sun porch. As of today, I have moved indoors as it is turning cool here in Ohio. I have spent every spring and summer morning out there with my coffee and began my day with prayer, meditation and reading. I love it.

When the weather cools, I move indoors to our living room, which is not used much in the summer. I have a cozy reading chair by the fireplace and can look out the front window at the trees and birds. I love the change of seasons but I do miss my sunroom. Of course, one or more of our kitties are with me wherever I am.🙂

I enjoy your blog although I am rather new to it. I am sorry for the loss of your beloved husband.

    Peace and love,

    Susan 🍂🧡🍁

  20. I love seeing the ways you change your porch for each season, Janet. I have a screened porch overlooking our back yard and gardens. I enjoy watching the birds, squirrels, bees and butterflies. I use it from the time it gets warm in the spring until it's too cold in the fall. It's on the south side of our house so gets the midday sun on the front and the morning and afternoon sun on the sides. Perfect for morning tea, a nap about 3 or 4 o'clock in the afternoon, and evening relaxation. It's one of the reasons we bought this home. So happy for you that you find comfort in your cozy spot on the porch. xo

  21. There is something about a private, well styled porch that gets me as well. My back porch is at the top of my list of favorite places to sit and relax in.
