Checking In On November Goals

1.  Hanging the mirror over the bed.  Done.  It wasn't easy but it took less than a minute.  Haha.  We put a nail in the darkest part of the wallpaper pattern and to be honest, I can't even see it - and I know where it is.  Granted I'm blind.

2.  Closet World is coming on Thursday to install a custom closet here.  To say I'm happy would be the understatement of the year.  We've been here 10 years and I've waxed and waned over this idea since the start.  I will do a detailed post, including costs for you.  Meanwhile I'm on pins and needles - in a good way.

3.  Having Thanksgiving at a restaurant was such a great idea.  Unfortunately our plans changed because L got sick.  Actually he was severely dehydrated from a long hard hike that morning.  He's just now feeling normal today.  It was scary and a good lesson about staying hydrated that's for sure.

4.  My shopping list is made and I have exactly 3 gift cards to pick up.  That's it.  😁

5.  As you can probably guess, I'm having trouble with making gift guides.  It's hard for me to encourage shopping, esp this time of year because it's being shoved down our throats already and I don't want to add to that.  I did find some lovely things and I will try to get over my anxiety and just publish it.

Hope your goals are coming right along.  x

  1. That mirror is wonderful! I have exactly one thing done on my November list. So while I took your wonderful inspiration and made a list, I've not done a good job of it - yet! There are still, what . . . three days in November!

  2. The mirror looks LOVELY! I can't wait to see your closet project. I just started renting my own little 900 sq. ft. cottage and I keep coming back here for inspiration. I've decided this rental is my practice run until I actually find the right one and buy it. I need to hurry up though because I'm not getting any younger.

  3. oh AJJ
dehydration is definitely a scary thing.
I wound up in the hospital last summer for 4 days because of it. my kidneys had started to shut down. and the electrolytes were all messed up. it took me months to really feel normal and better again. terrible fatigue and weakness with it. but then i'm older too.
he might need to see a doctor for blood work just to make sure he's ok. I never knew it was such a critical thing. I thought only hard charging athletes had it! not to scare you... but just saying.
agreed on the gift thing. I do the same thing you do and they seem to love it.
    I hate to shop! xo♥

  4. Gifts for my husband and myself will be US gifts. Something we both can use or need for the house. We ordered new coasters from some of our old vacation trips photos, yummy soaps for our shower, new soccer ball to play with our granddaughters, LED lanterns for camping and power outage and a shaped French bread pan. For me to bake with and him to eat. No surprises but all useful. Happy Holidays.

  5. Hi Janet, I'm excited to see your closet remodel as I've been thinking of doing one also for a long, long time. Also, I'd love to see what kind of table top or cabinet top Christmas decorating ideas you might have. I don't want to put up a tree this year, but I'd love some ideas of how to put something pretty together for the top of my buffet.

I hope L is recovering and has no lasting side affects.

    1. thank you janet, i'm so excited too. i don't really do traditional christmas decor. i usually just cut holly and boxwood and anything else that looks pretty and bring it inside. maybe you can stick branches on top of your cabinet or down the center of your table and tuck in some candles? i do like to make a few fresh wreaths for the house out of boxwood too. x

  6. I can’t wait to see your new closet. When I got divorced and downsized my house, a California Closet installation was one of the best things I had done. Seventeen years later, I love it as much as I did the day it was installed. I’m so excited for you!

  8. The mirror is gorgeous. With the addition of the mirror the photo makes the wallpaper almost look like the walls are fabric covered. Charming. Really all I have to do is pick up gift cards for Christmas and two birthdays. What I did buy I purchased months ago. It is fun to get out and see the stores and downtowns decorated for the holidays. The bulk of our Christmas decorating is greens, fairy lights and candles. Our two foot tree is in a vintage champagne bucket so that tells you how small it is! My husband and I don't normally give each other anything on Christmas. When the kids were young we said no bills in January was our gift. Since then we go out of town and stay at a nice inn for an evening and consider that our gift. How exciting to know you'll soon have a system worked out that will make life so much easier.Yes, in your heat you really need to make sure your hydrated.

  9. Absolutely love that mirror. Lucky estate sale find. I am now on the hunt as well. Isn't it funny that some of those most dreaded chores, i.e. hang a mirror, turns out all that is needed is to take but a deep breath, a hammer, a nail and a moment to complete. When done, those angels do sing, yes?
I am a great keeper of lists and I like your idea of a monthly. I have a tendency to make one a week and since I still work full-time, I am never, ever, never completing it. So December will be my first Month To-Do with larger projects - No escaping those nattering "Just Do It" insanely rewarding projects.
Love your blog and yummy ideas for the living smaller life here in California. xoxox-holly

  10. The mirror is a super addition and it has great lines...what a find!
It will be exciting to see the closet remodel...I have been wanting a better organized closet every since we bought out bungalow... 35 years ago!
We are making and giving mostly consumable gifts except for the grandchildren...they will get a toy and a book each.
My December do list will be fairly large...baking, deep cleaning and Christmas cards for a start...
    hope Larry is feeling better.

  12. Love the mirror. You certainly have am eye for putting the right thing in the right place.
My closet is very small so I'm looking forward to seeing yours all decked out.
    Poor Larry!

  13. I certainly hope that Larry is feeling much, much better now. I hope you both are able to breathe a collective sigh of relief after such a scare.

Overall, it looks like you've done quite well with your November goals. Having the small closet of your dreams will be a wonderful gift to yourself. I'm looking forward to the reveal.

After the tough year I've mentioned before, I realized it's high time for us to celebrate. It's time to celebrate life, to celebrate Christmas in its true spirit. Yesterday I actually completed holiday decorations, simple but uplifting. Last night I watched "The Christmas Candle," a New-to-me film not rated high, but that I personally found soul-inspiring. It reminded me of the magic of the season, the magic of believing, the magic of sharing.

In a surprise move, I ordered a bunch of games (think along the lines of the high school reunion scene in "The Santa Clause") for us as gifts, to play on Christmas Day and thereafter. I'm so excited about it all.

However we all celebrate this season, I wish everyone the magic it can bring, the sheer joy one can feel.

    Cheers, Ardith

  15. Also, can you tell us and show us your ENTIRE xmas home décor that you are going to do this year. I NEED INSPIRATION TO KEEP SIMPLE! THANKS!

  16. Janet, you are a motivational force. Thank you for sharing the concept of a doable monthly list of the sort of notable tasks/goals that when accomplished truly are gratifying. This might just solve my problem of allowing the little daily tedious reminders obscure the once-done-feel-good-projects.
    Gratefully . . .
