roses in the house...and other things

good morning.

i hope you had a good weekend.
i did, mostly b/c i got a lot done in the garden and around the house.
i've got spring fever and it cannot be stopped.

my symptoms...

1.  sudden bursts of energy and creativity
2.  the desire to light a match to everything i own and start anew
3.  frenzied garden work
4.  wandering through nurseries in a confused state
5.  purging w/o regret
6.  sneezing
7.  regretting what i've purged
8.  feel free to add your own symptoms in the comments

seriously, i have been pouring over design magazines and reading every gardening book i own.
i've been talking with M who has caught it too.  this is dangerous b/c one of the  symptoms seems to be encouraging others to buy things that you really don't need.

but it has good side effects too...

i donated a bunch of stuff to the goodwill and took a quick look around while i was there.
found this vintage bamboo garden stool.

cute, huh?

and did you notice i painted the little record cabinet blue?
i think it should be a darker blue though, don't you?

the rose garden is in its first bloom.
the size and production of roses is astounding.
this may be the last time i can bring them in the house though b/c of my allergies.

i'm linking this to miss jane's fab blog, small but charming.
do join in won't you?

  2. You give me fever! Or maybe it's spring, but I too am suffering from many of the same symptoms,no medication necessary.

I love the color of the record cabinet. Did you use chalk paint?

And your roses are heady with loveliness.

    Maybe try some Florinase?

Thanks for making the day more beautiful.

  4. Janet,

I love your garden stool...never ever have I seen one in bamboo. You find the coolest stuff!

I personally like the teal color, wouldn't change it but that's just me. :)

Your dining room is looking beautiful...the photo with your purse in it looks like it is out of a magazine.

  5. glad to hear you have the fever! I've got it too, but I'm also in a state of fog because of the quickly approaching move. I have all the symptoms you have plus some others. Ugghh! Your roses are amazing. I will miss the spring fever gardening frenzy and being able to cut flowers from my garden.

  6. I spent the weekend weeding our Humble Bungalow Garden. Am a wee bit sore this morning but I have some pretty geraniums in a new to me tin planter which I will photograph and post soon. I love Spring with the riot of blooms and the renewal of energy. The allergies are my least favourite part.
I adore the roses and think your bamboo stool is a welcome addition to your fabulous decor.
I think you are so brave to paint in bright colours. You are a trail blazer Janet and I love following you

  8. Oh I like the shade of blue you painted the record cabinet. Lovely roses, my dad used to grow them so we always had them around the house in summer.

The blue is nice, darker might be fun. Did you use chalk paint?

  12. Love this! Your blogs are like a lovely meditation for me, Janet! I have spring clean-up/clean-out fever too - talked about it on my blog. Am off to do more work, work, work in the garden this afternoon, but the only thing coming out of the ground so far is the Sorrel, the rhubarb and my Christmas Roses, which bloom here in Atlantic Canada in late APril/early May! I really like the colour of the cabinet. It is a lighter blue that echoes the lighter green of the plants in the room. It feels right to me, but then, it is just a lovely place that I visit and you have to live there!!!

  14. Lovely!
What's the name of the pink/yellow rose? I have a similar one called "Passionate Kisses" and yes, I took it home mostly for the good vibes of its name :)

Number two from your list resonates loudly with me-our home is a bit of hubby's things and some of mine from previous lives; when we move it's ALL going-cannot wait to do that.

I just found out one can paint their old outdoor rug ( yea Pinterest)-a good recycle project for Earth day.

  15. I spend the weekend weeding and pruning. My roses have leaves but no blooms of course, this is where I want to move to CA :)
I love the color of the cabinet, it is very refreshing with all the whites. I never get tired looking at your rooms, they always put a smile on my face, thank you!

  16. If you're looking for a different blue I just painted my dining room sideboard Phillipsburg Blue by Benjamin Moore. It's very rich looking. But if you want a country blue or a beachy blue then it's not the blue for you.

  17. Today, I :
    1. Cleaned son's room top to bottom, 2 bags of garbage out, 2 shelves hung.
    2. Painted 4 canvases with base coat of paint for weekend project.
    3. 6 loads of laundry.
    4. 1 bag and 2 filing cabinets to Goodwill.
    5. Bathrooms cleaned.
    6. Front garden- old mulch removed, 2 dead plants removed, ground leveled, plants/bushes trimmed back. Just need to get a load of gravel this week.

Taking a coffee break and just need to vacuum the rest of the house and mop floors and then get some dinner ready. PHEW!!!!

  22. Stunning roses... the perfect compliment to your pretty blue cabinet and dining room. Awesome bamboo garden stool... a great find! Spring fever has struck here too ... A cleaning frenzy and several loads to the local mission thrift shop. 'Keep it simple' is my new mantra... now on to more closets!

  26. Hi, I love your house and I spend my life decluttering!

I have been sneezing like a maniac too. The toddler says "bless you" which is sweet when he hears me sneeze.

Bought a red 2.5 kilo suitcase today, SO LIGHT!!!!!! Exciting.

  27. Love that little bamboo stool...what a great find! I am obsessed with all things outdoors and gardening right now. I'm trying to get everyone that comes in the store to buy patio furniture just because I want some so bad. I've been scouring Craigslist but not the right thing...yet. Love your house as always. Yes, I think the record cabinet should be darker blue. Do you know what color your walls are? I'm wanting to paint here...and like your shade of white.

    1. the walls are benjamin moore simply white. and i agree about the blue.

  28. Paint idea: use the same richer, crisper blue that appears in your china vases. Then you'll see it symmetrically when you look at that elevation of the room and it will tie in with the china vases used elsewhere in the seating area. More a Ralph-y navy.... Look in his book for his navy's and match the paint chip.

  29. Well you know that dining room kills me every time you post it. The roses are amazing. I have the same symptoms of "spring fever" as you do. My azaleas are really putting on quite a show right now. I am praying for a more peaceful summer than last. xo

  30. Hi Janet! The first thing I ever know about you was your shopping ban, back in 2010:
    http://thegardenerscottage.blogspot.co.at/2010/04/simply-stopping-shopping.html
That's when I found your blog. It seems your spring fever is very reliable. :-)
Seems like yesterday and your dining room did not change a lot since then.

Do you actually dine in the dining room or do you eat in the kitchen, on the sofa, in the veranda?

When I was young we never lunch in the dining room. The kitchen was the lunch-place.

Purging is a very good idea!

  31. Your roses are stunning! It is a shame you won't be able to enjoy them inside throughout the season. If wishing could make it so, those roses would be in my much more unforgiving Midwest garden.

  34. Our roses will not arrive until June. How lovely that you can enjoy yours this early. I'm also compelled to clean up both the outside and the inside. Spring sunshine certainly shows the wall dust hidden by winter's shadows.

I was regretting my super-purge of clothing from last summer. Reading blogs all winter gave me ideas on how I could have used those items. Imagine my surprise when I found them in my attic ready to go to spring consignment. I resurrected some items to give them a new life. Like shopping without cash.

  36. Love Love Love the blue paint!
I am in a spring mood too, picking up, puttering in the garden etc!
I wish where I lived my yard was blooming, but we just got hit by another winter storm!
    So unfortunate!!
I have 3 lowly tulips that bloomed and they make me smile!
    Hope your day is wonderful!

  37. So sorry you suffer from allergies Janet - I know they can be really debilitating. (Not from personal experience but poor Mr NT)... Love your little purchase from the Goodwill store and your roses look so pretty. S x

  38. I love the blue! It was the first thing I noticed! I think it's a nice medium between the dark wood and the white. I am so jealous of your roses! Mine are barely pushing leaves.

  39. 1. Wandering from one end to the other in my closet, paralyzed by the thought of sifting through too much stuff.
    2. Knowing YOU are doing the right thing, and I just can't begin to.
    3. Purge...can it wait until tomorrow?
Part of my paralysis is allergy connected...a chest rattle that just won't go away. Have an appt. to get it checked out, but this spring has been a sneezy and different kind of cough-y one for me, too.
Keep up the good work! You are such an inspiration. I LOVE your new bamboo stool!
    xoxo, Chris

  40. I'd like the blue cabinet where the white table is now. I think it looks a little imbalanced with both dark pieces on the same side.

  41. A perfect shade of blue! It's one of my favorite colors. I have a tapestry pillow from Belgium of Peter Rabbit in the onion patch and his jacket is that very color of blue! My roses are bursting with blooms and yes I have purge fever! No wonder they call it Spring Fever :)

  42. Poissonally, I like the blue of the cabinet just the way it is.

    Happy almost weekend!
PS. I too have Spring Fever, big time.

  43. janet,
you seriously are a one woman show. did you ever consider stand-up comedy?
i too have been a mad hatter, nesting and doing. the full moon has me up and wired for the day.
i am just embracing it and blaming it on my new found power surge of eating vegan. who knew it could be so easy.
skin is clearer, weight is dropping off, energy and focus are at an all time high and love is in the air.
blue, i love all shades but a deep navy would be pretty too. a high gloss navy. RL would approve of that.
