sequins and chambray

j. crew

before i met DANI and TABITHA, i was what you call crewless.
i really knew nothing about j. crew.

but these two elegant ladies know j. crew like the back of their hands.
their wardrobes are simply stunning, so i began looking around j. crew's website to see if i could find any ideas i could steal for a couple of festive events that are planned for the holiday season.
that's when i found the above outfit.
sequins and chambray got my attention.

i just so happen to have a leopard-print sequined dress from 1986.
what can i say, dynasty was the #1 show in america.
it was made by lillie rubin, the fancy resortwear company that was founded in 1946.

here it is in all its 1986 glory

and here it is tied at the waist with a chambray shirt

and here i am imitating a disco ball.

so what do you think?
with or without chambray shirt.
i'm leaning towards with.
don't hold back.

  1. I'm with Sue, no shirt but I'd say no stockings either. I love it!!! and you look fantastic in it. It doesn't look 80's to me at all.

  2. No shirt. Nude stockings. That dress is too cute to hide.

  3. I go with the disco ball. Everyone will revolve around you.

  4. I love the disco ball look. No shirt and nude legs.

  5. Love Jcrew. Love your dress. I like it without as well... it has great lines . The disco ball effect is awesome ;)

  6. I like it both with the shirt and without. I think it's more flattering without the shirt - you have such a perfect figure. But the shirt makes it more hip and cool.

I had a couple Lillie Rubin dresses back in the '80's. We had a Lillie Rubin boutique in the mall in Las Vegas.

  7. You Slinky Fox Janet!! You and Tabitha have teeny little waists. No shirt. You look fab.

  8. I love it both ways but for a festive event I say without, and no stockings, but definitely add the red shoes. I think the pops of red in clutch, shoes and hat in the JCrew photo are what say Holiday. You look amazing in the dress!

  9. looks like I'm in the minority here but I say with the shirt. ups the cool factor. and? dude. yes. red shoes. bet you're just the gal who scored a hot red pair somewhere for around $1! you look great - whatever you decide. donna

  10. I like it with, very cute. LOL at the disco ball picture :)

  11. I like it with the shirt . . . but if things get heated up at the party, you can certainly go without!

    ReplyDelete
  12. No shirt. The shirt looks like you couldn't decide if you wanted to go to a party or to the grocery store;) Oh, and nude legs, like the model! Have fun!!

  13. Janet...you look amazing...skip the shirt and show off your figure! Love that last photo in your bathroom! Very sparkly!

  14. I don't do fashion at all so I'm quite happy that my opinion follows the others...no shirt and no stockings. and no red hat!

the dress is awesome though ... definately wear it to the festivities.

Can you hear me whistling?! xo

  15. With out the shirt....nude stockings....silver or black shoes..some red or silver jewelry....red clutch !

  16. Well you know how I feel about it already: with the shirt. It is you.
Thanks for the mention you are too kind. We drank the crewlade together!
BTW I do think you are gorgeous in dress alone, it shows off your stunning figure.

  17. Without...you have a great neckline and shoulders--show them off. ~~Bliss

  18. No shirt, and either bare legs or nude hose. The dress looks great on you!

  19. I say go with the shirt....and the hat too, what the hell.

You kept a dress from the year I got sober.

Party rock is in the house tonight in that dress!

  20. For me it depends on where the party is, how fancy etc. You have an amazing figure and look great either way. Definitely need some red as this will add the hip factor!

  21. No shirt and WOWI love the disco effect!
Cute dress too, you are seriously adorable.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I love it both ways because it provides two totally different looks.
And I have a mad penchant for 80's glitz and glam!

P.S. You are one hot mama!

  23. I like it with the shirt b/c of the juxtaposition. However, as many have said your figure is striking in the dress alone.

    ReplyDelete
  24. First darling, you look fabulous. Not everyone can put on their little disco dress from the 1980`s and a) fit in it and b) look HOT.

I say no shirt. I would like to see it with bare legs and a little black or steel suede shoe-bootie to make it 2011. The suede will de-glitz it. No red shoes and bag...too much like a cougar.

  25. I think it's pretty awesome that you can still fit into your dress from the eightie's. And I love your bathroom. For this time of year, and a more casual look, I say with the shirt. For evening wear, I say without.

  26. A saleswoman said something wise to me one time--"If you STILL have a (good) figure show it off. There's always time later to cover up." You look great in the dress and I love the neckline. With the shirt it is a little ambiguous (as in grocery store casual). I think a pretty sheer black shawl would be great with it. Just be prepared for a lot of the gals to hate you!Allegra

  27. Amazing.
BOTH! Find two different places to go and wear the shirt for one event, and for the other, go without.
    Stunningly beautiful. Soooooo cool.

  28. You look Fabulous!! I love sequins! They rock. You have a Killer figure. Meanwhile I am dealing with a sick baby. No Glamour there xxx

    ReplyDelete
  29. I agree...without the shirt for a night out and for a more casual daytime look wear it with the shirt. You do have a great figure so why not show it off? It's amazing that you can still wear it, flaunt it baby!

    Linda

  30. Both! You look amazing with just the dress, you've got such a fantastic figure it seems a crime not to rock it if it's warm enough to.
The denim shirt looks cool and edgy as well for colder days. x

  31. Janet, you have the bod of a svelte 25 year old, the most amazing advert for the health benefits of veganism btw! and in that dress you shoot lights across a room, I think you might be a superhero!!

I'm totally with Razmataz, if you look that good in the dress, go with it and leave the shirt behind, but some shoe-boots or other really of the mo shoes would halt a completely 80s vibe (- unless you want to put on some 80s party music, foof your hair to the max and go for it!!)

  32. *Wolf whistles*
Janet, look at your figure! You look incredible and I love how you're lighting up the bathroom. Ok I'm not putting on 14lbs when I turn 50, I want to look as wonderful as you do, if I have to starve so be it.

    ReplyDelete
  33. No shirt, just the dress. You look fabulous in it. Oh, and nude legs, too.

The shirt makes it cute, but honestly, if I looked like you do in that dress I would probably never take it off. Seriously. I might be a bit overdressed at the grocery store, but people would just have to deal!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Bare legs, Kitten heels. The dress looks beautiful on you. Do not like the chambray with it at all. To put a chambray shirt on top of that dress, one has to be a teen to carry it off; I'd want to see you look more elegant. The dress already has enough going on to stand alone. "Less is more."

    ReplyDelete
  35. With the shirt seems more you, but if it is a fancy party, then I don't know about the shirt.......I almost choked on my smoothie when I read the story about Jenna Lyons, Creative Director of JC and her lesbian love scandal.

  36. Hi Janet

The neckline of the dress is so beautifully cut and so flattering on you. Don't cover it up!
    You look smashing!

    ReplyDelete
  37. I like the black leg without the shirt, a nude leg with the shirt. Either way, damn woman! Love your shoulder muscles!

    ReplyDelete
  38. LOVE IT. I would say take off the black stockings and show off your gams. You are quite the hottie! Seriously though, you look great!

    ReplyDelete
  39. It looks great both ways. I like the nude leg and red shoe look. I love the disco ball look, but I'll bet you can light up a room without it.

  40. No shirt.

Did you lose weight over the past 12 months?

    ReplyDelete
  41. I 2nd, 3rd, 4th the nude tights! In the last picture (we see your bare arms) one gets the image – how lovely the outfit would be with nude tinted legs instead of black. The skintone compliments the pattern.

Since the dress is from a resortwear-company, I guess resort = pool = nude!

  42. Love it~ you're too cute!! Ok, keep the chambray shirt and no tights at all.

  43. I like it either way, also. One thing about the shirt. I don't like it tied at the waist. To me that means casual and the model does have her shirt tucked in. So with a dress I guess you cannot tuck it in. Whatever you decide, you'll look great!

  44. Without the shirt.

Have to admit though, I'm terribly distracted by what I think is your hairdyer in the basin. Eek.
You'll be more than imitating a disco ball if you get that thing wet and then use it!

    ReplyDelete
  45. That dress was made for you! Wear it without the shirt. I love the black stockings...maybe a black wrap to balance them?

    ReplyDelete
  46. J-A-N-E-T !!! Your are gorgeous ! with the shirt or without, I think your look is much cuter than the one you found. Smiles, Susie

    ReplyDelete
  47. I say without. You have a great figure and love the back neckline of the dress. Looks great and would never know it's from '86. With the shirt is cute too -- but for a more casual look. May as well flaunt what you have!

    ReplyDelete
  48. Kudos to you for fitting into a dress you wore in '86. i've never posted before but really love your blog! oh, and no shirt.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Chic stylish and fabulous as ever Janet and I LOVE the chambray shirt over the dress. Different and edgy and you. Wonderful. XX

    ReplyDelete
  50. Well, I don't know you other than this blog, but I will plunge ahead and say that I think it just looks more like you with the shirt. The dress is a lot of look by itself, which is cool if that's what you're going for, but I think the combo is more modern. And who ever wears nude stockings? You might just as well have bare legs. (Yes, my legs would also be bright white.)

    ReplyDelete
  51. I hope you did not lose the weight due to emotional stress but because you wanted to become thinner. 10 lbs at your size is a lot! But - and I have to admit, that I are not happy with the fact – that I like the way thin women look, especially in sequined dresses. In the end, it's all about weight. For me ...:-/

    ReplyDelete
  52. I'd wear that around the house any day! W or w/out the shirt you look great!

    ReplyDelete
  53. I love the dress alone. You look absolutely stunning. No to the shirt- perhaps a light cashmere cardigan just draped over the shoulders.

    Helen xx

  54. This is a hard one because chambray is so you! So I think you can go either way - if its more casual party where the shirt, if its more dressy go without. The black tights are throwing me off though. I agree you have a "killer" body! You rock it both ways very well.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Cute w/the shirt.

    Much cuter w/out.

    ReplyDelete
  56. you are so dad-gummed cute ajj!
you could sew sequins on a burlap sack and make it look stylish!
wonder how a see-through red blouse tied at the waist would look for christmas?
not my style... but you could pull anything off!
    love,

  57. I'm still laughing about the disco ball. So once again you can make multiple outfits. Aren't you super cool. But, if you want to blow them away; dress + nude stockings + to die for red shoes = super sexy.
Lord, I didn't have a figure like that when I was 18. Must be that vegan lifestyle of yours.
    You rock!

  58. Channel Audrey Hepburn. Allow that fabulous dress to hold its own. Lighter tights. Either the pumps you have or ballet flats. But no chambray shirt mishmash(trust me--those trying-too-hard J Crew looks will not hold up over time). Whereas Audrey...always divine.

  59. Janet, NO shirt, just that fabulous dress & nude legs.

Looks great on you. Wish I could fit into what I wore in the 80's!

  60. First of all, why don't I remember this dress???

Second, I love it any way you want to wear it...it's just a fabulous dress.

Finally, for everyone else, she is more gorgeous in person, she fit into her jeans the day she came home from having her babies, she can cook (and loves it), she can organize (and loves it even more- hmmm, this I don't understand), she can crank call with the best of them..(don't get excited, pretty sure she grew outta that - ahhh, high school :=), she can type really fast, before Jack it was Bruce, she used to have a dog named Toto, at least that's what I called him, she's a wonderful mom and she has the biggest heart.

    I hate her......except, I love her
and have for, how long has it been, close to 40 years.

Dammit Janet, how is this possible.....ugh, we are getting old.

    ReplyDelete
  61. The dress without the shirt. It's stunning on you! Highlights your neck and shoulders. The black stockings give it an updated look. I'm jealous.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Definitely WITH the chambray shirt!!! Makes it more current and takes away some of the "cheesiness" of the sequins. You look great either way!

  64. Im 28 yrs old and sooo jealous of how good you look in this outfit! I love the look with the shity and black tights! I might even add a boot to the look. I say go for the bolder look and forget about what everyone else is saying about keeping it simple. I think you look more intriguing with the shirt anyway.

  66. the shirt hides your figure. you have a terrific and amazing figure. show it off. nude stockings.

  67. re: jcrew. it brought back memories. i grew up on a farm in the midwest. i ordered swimsuits from jcrew through the catalogue when i was in 8th grade...I am now almost 50. then in college i ordered shirts and sweaters. they all lasted for a very long time. timeless and quality....even that many years ago. good memories

  68. You look amazing in this dress! Do NOT wear the black tights or the shirt and definitely go with bare-legs.
NEVER wear nude stockings...it's a huge fashion faux-pas. And after all, you have beautiful legs and live in Cali!
I like the idea of a pop of red by way of a clutch. Wear a strappy shoe in silver. Simple diamond studs and one simple bracelet.

I might be late to this "party" and you might have already worn your preferred outfit?? I hope we see photos of the final decision:)
LOVE your blog! You are fantastic:)

  70. I just saw this and you may be done with the dress. your figure is perfect. the dress is great alone, but the way you wore it with the shirt, etc., was divine. The nude hose no shirt looks matronly. and I am a69 year old matron. Do you have pics of how you wore it?

    ReplyDelete
  71. No shirt, please! It's way too much in an 80s teenager way. It's an outfit I might have tried to sneak wearing in junior high. You could pull off the dress alone.
