hydrangeas

it's flowers in the house with jane and her small but charming blog.
i told jane i'd be joining because i don't really have much else to report these days.
i love these hydrangeas and they are blooming quite well in my garden but i'm hesitant to cut them for fear of interrupting next years bloom.  so i snipped 3 blossoms that were hiding and placed them in a water glass.
like i said, there's not much going on here unless watching hair turn grey is your thing.
if that's the case, you'd be thrilled.

  10. I cut mine like crazy, and then I cut them right back in late fall. They are the best thing in my garden right now and are surviving our heat wave.
Have you seen the movie Another Year? The female lead has beautiful gray hair, made me think I could handle that one day too.
Oh it's a wonderful movie as well!

  16. I do the same thing...cut from the underside where they won't be missed! You are reminding me that I need to get some fresh flowers in the guest room because my sister is visiting today. You have a such beautiful photographic way with flowers.

  21. A beautifully tranquil post, Janet. Lovely images, as always.
I've posted my changes from brown hair to white on my Miss Cellany site. I'm too bone idle to go down the colouring route but keep wondering about buying a long brown wig so that I can have the odd day as somebody other than a white haired woman.

  28. Lovely blooms Janet...

  29. To color or not to color, that is the real question.
My hair is dishwater blond, so the grey sneaks in. coloring doesn't seem to change it much unless I stripped it... yikes, haven't done that since high school back in 1918.

Is your hydrangea dry, Janet? it's such a soft, beautiful color!

  31. cut them now, then don't touch them again until next year. do not cut them back. you can prune out the dead wood in the spring.

i'm a life long southerner who's struggling to have her beloved french hydrangeas in the midwest. between the newer "ever bloomers" and crazy garden lady chickenwire & leaf constructs, i'm having some success.

  32. They're such a pretty color! One of my favorite flowers, so happy to see more of them. Thanks.

  33. Lovely Janet, and I love that vase/glass they are in...

Hope you are well. Actually yesterday I came and caught up on old posts I had missed but did not have time to comment. I have been using Neem (nut) oil on my face for a while (bought it at a health food store) in place of moisturizer at night and LOVE it. I like that there is nothing in it besides the oil itself - no extra crap. It needs to be refrigerated and hardens in the fridge but a drop of it on the finger melts instantly and makes my skin soft as butter overnight. And doesn't clog pores. I am still using my commercial sunscreen and pressed powder, but slowly trying to switch my cosmetics over to purer versions...

Love your summer wardrobes also. You always look so put together...!

  34. Well, Hydrangeas are my favorite summer flower. With this technique you can keep flowers for so many days. Keep jasmine flower in full of water in yard, it will throw good smell through out the day.

  35. Hydrangeas, always lovely. Letting your hair turn grey, you have ready-made devoted followers. In fact, a dear friend is undertaking that process. So exciting. Me, Im destined to be one of those dishwater/salt&pepper/not really great gray gals. Whatever shall I do? Admire the hydrangeas. That'll work.
A true fan of all that you choose to tell us.

  37. Hydrangeas always look great. And so can gray hair.

  38. Growing out grey is easy with a layered, shorter cut.

  39. Hydrangeas are my favorite flower--I hate cutting mine, but my mother gets the most giant hydrangea bushes growing that I've ever seen. She swears that it's by cutting the heads off only. Yours are lovely!

  40. Wait! How does cutting hydrangeas effect next year's blooms? Am I supposed to let the blooms die on the bush and then cut them?

    ReplyDelete
  41. How did I miss this post 2 days ago... seems as though I am not paying attention (too busy at work atm - not good) Love Hydrangeas, fresh, dried or whatever colour - especially the really dark, dark red. You crack me up ... watching your hair turn grey!! XX

  42. My hydrangeas did not bloom this year. I wonder if its because I snipped off all the blooms at the end of the year last year so I could have dried hydrangeas. Surely not. I thought it's because we've had so little rain.
