nowhere i'd rather be

I am convinced that I was always meant to be here.  This house is me and I am it.  And you guys know how much I love routines and how they keep me grounded, this house does that for me.  I move by the rhythms of the light now.

No matter where I sit inside I see beautiful green views from every single window.  I don't see other structures or homes.  I just recently noticed this.

When the sun is just about to set it casts this beautiful golden glow on everything green outside and it is dead set magical.  That's my cue to close the drapes throughout the house and move to the bedroom to start my night routine of a wicked hot bath and my beautiful sheets.  I read til I drift off knowing there is nowhere I'd rather be. x

  1. Your home is totally charming. I bought the Cottages & Bungalows issue, as I really enjoy having a physical copy to look at. I especially like the wallpaper in your bedroom!

  5. Janet, such a beautiful post. Although I live in a totally different ambience your lovely home has inspired me to make a few interior changes. Nothing expensive just little things to make my home mine now I am on my own. Contentment is beginning to return.

  9. Good morning Janet - You have a beautiful way of expressing yourself. I live in Fairhope, AL right on the bay in a small townhome that I absolutely adore. I also have a routine and I am so attached to it! I walk to my pier every night....watch the sun go down over the water .. watch the heron's, pelicans and ducks ....always so grateful for being able to do this....then come in for my nightly routine. It took me a while to find my peace after my husband's death. But now.... I feel so fortunate to be exactly where I am. So glad you have your magical place too!

  10. Janet, I couldn't wish for anything nicer for you, other than to have Larry still with you to share it of course. The feeling you describe is one that I have searched for in vain my whole life, since my lost youth ;-) I am deeply envious of you, but I am also so very, very happy for you too. I love this post, and your photos with it. Thank you for writing it.

  12. I was adrift for a very long time after my husband died. Married 43 years, my life had come to revolve around him, and gladly. It's ten years hence (7/17/13 when he died) and I have found that when I've tackled a difficult project and succeeded admirably, I think to myself, "David would be so proud of me."

  14. I’m enjoying seeing your posts again and totally get how you enjoy your home. I also love being around mine and actually hate leaving it when I need to travel to see family overseas or for work. Well, obviously I love seeing my family, but you know what I mean. Your garden looks beautiful too!

  19. I love hearing your routines. It is so lovely to look out any window and only see greenery. I gravitate to windows with that as well in my own home. Hearing bird song also brings me peace and is why I enjoy my back porch so much.

  20. I so get this. the other day I had a nightmare that I lived in an apartment after I sold my home many years ago. I really hated it and felt such regret. then I woke up. the windows were open and there was a breeze blowing through the trees outside, there were birds at the feeder. I felt such relief and gratitude that I was living where I am, have been for over 20 years. I see my small patio garden, the herbs and flowers flourishing. Darby

  27. Hello Janet - I love that Golden Hour.... I can't stand living in apartments anymore: I thought that would be our future as we navigate early old age(!) but I can't cope at all. I want a garden and a golden hour and a view with no neighbours (even though they are there) and trees and roses. I love the smallness; the human-scale of your home. And I want routines. I'm so random it's exhausting. I know you've written a series about your routines (I printed out the posts, however, I can't get them to fit to the suburbs of northern London! However, please do write more about them. I need an absolute blueprint for a day. Living with the light has been a life-long goal ever since I visited a woman in Arizona who did just that - she used candles for a short time after nightfall but fell asleep shortly afterwards. She rose at dawn. I just love that. Much love. Anna.

  28. Swoon! What a gem of a house. Redlands seems full of magnificent homes and I love seeing them restored. Your touches are perfection and that dining room RL wallpaper so wonderful. So glad you were able to share this masterpiece. I’m sure the family who lives here will have years and years of joy continuing to decorate and style this real treasure. And lucky for them they have you! xo
