Falling Apart

As many of you have inquired and maybe guessed, things around here are falling apart.  My whole world has come to a screeching halt and breathing, just simple breathing has been hard.  About 3 weeks ago we received the devastating news that the love of my life, my best friend, my husband, Larry has stage 4 stomach cancer.  Life as we knew it is over and we are reeling with decisions and uncertainty.  We remain positive and I ask for your prayers, good thoughts and respect for my need to take a break from life right now.  I will post from time to time because I think it will be a good distraction.  I will always love gardens, interiors and fashion ๐Ÿ˜Š.

My dear friend Elizabeth, the vintage contessa, will be running a style profile towards the end of the month.  I'm so flattered to be part of her style series.  She asked me months ago and I answered her questions so you will be able to click over there when she publishes it.

I love you all and thank you so much for your support over the years.  You are all the very BEST readers anybody could ever ask for.  xo

  48. I am so sorry. You certainly have my prayers, good thoughts, and respect, just as you ask. I have followed your blog for years and have treasured, valued and learned so much from your perspective and your thoughts. I have just navigated a year of surgery, chemo and radiation for my adult daughter (breast cancer), and prior to that, the same for my husband (colon cancer). Please be very kind to yourself as you chart these new, unknown waters. I hope that knowing how many of us will be thinking of you, praying for you, and wishing you well will be a source of strength.

  52. Two years ago my lovely daughter was diagnosed with lymphoma. I had just lost my husband two years before so I was ready to throw in the towel. Long story short she endured radiation, chemo, and finally qualified for the stem cell transplant procedure at Stanford Hospital & Research Center in Palo Alto. One year hence, and she's back at work, bought herself a new car, and recently signed up for an art class. She's doing well. Hugs and the same good thoughts for your beloved Larry.

Thoughts and prayers from several readers; we feel as if we know you via the words you write and the pictures you post. Please keep your "Blog Family" current on life in your household; writing is the best means in which to pour out your feelings, thoughts, anger, and grasp for understanding. 57. Dearest Janet,

I was so sorry to read of your devastating news. Hearing it the first time sends your life in a tailspin. A year ago this past December, I was diagnosed with breast cancer for the second time. (I was first diagnosed 17 years ago, so I thought I was home free!) Of course, this time treatment was much more aggressive. Janet, I want you to have hope. There is so much that can be done for cancer treatment these days. I have talked to people in the cancer center this past year who have such remarkable and encouraging stories to share.

For me, my personal faith in Jesus is what has kept me going. It's amazing how He has given me peace in all circumstances and throughout treatments and surgeries. Our lives are truly in God's hands, and He cares about us all and Larry deeply. I will pray that God will lead you to the best, the most knowledgeable, and the most compassionate medical staff out there. I will pray for healing and comfort in this hard time.

"Fear not for I am with you. Be not dismayed for I am your God. I will strengthen you, I will help you. I will uphold you with my victorious right hand." Isaiah 41:10

  107. Oh Janet. I’m shocked and devastated to read this news. Of course I don’t know how you’re feeling or what you’re thinking but I can’t help but imagine the rage you must have gone through or going through at this. How does this happen to someone so healthy? I guess the only thing I’m getting at is to remember you’re entitled to your feelings. I do feel compelled to tell you that my grandfather came out of stage IV pancreatic cancer when he was 83 years old. The news was so bleak and he was so old that no one even considered the possibility that he could survive. But for some reason he was blessed with a miracle and within a year his scans showed not even a hint that there had been cancer. I had little faith in my life at that time but how does one argue with that? Sending you my love, thoughts, prayers. Perhaps this is the battle your natural tenacity has been gearing up for your whole life. I believe in you.

  110. Janet, my heart goes out to you and I am so grateful to you for all the years of beauty and goodness received from your inspiring blog. Four years ago I was diagnosed with advanced cervical cancer and given 6 months to live. I investigated alternative treatments, diet, spiritual work, etc. I implemented these along with SOME of the traditional treatments, and have been cancer free since, in fact my cancer cleared up in record time. I've collected stories of remarkable healings derived from opening to the Love that we are and also happy and joyous distractions. I'm writing a book about it and have given talks. If you are interested in these, let me know and I can send some of this to you by email. My thoughts and prayers are with you and I KNOW miracles happen daily. Stay positive and expect the best. 119. Janet, my heartfelt, healing thoughts to both you and Larry at this difficult time. As a cancer survivor, I know what it is to be told, "You have cancer." Michael Douglas, the actor, was diagnosed with Stage IV cancer in 2010 and he's still with us. Cancer likes to make its own rules. I will never understand why bad things happen to good people. that you shared this crushing news is an Important first step I think. When our sweet daughter was diagnosed with stage four metastatic breast cancer we were amazed by how much it helped simply for our wise friends to "know." Each approached us and our girl uniquely, some with head-on questions, others were magnificent listeners, providers of meals, unexpected diversions . . . all lent love, strength, positivity, and normalcy
You and I never have met and likely never will still I can say that I love you and from the opposite coast of this wide country am there for you.

  133. I am adding you and, Larry to my daily prayers. I don't want to add any stress to your and, Larry's decisions at this time. Yet, I feel compelled to share these two blogs. ( chrisbeatcancer.com ) and, ( (thetruthaboutcancer.com)
My daughter's FIL was dx with cancer almost 5 years ago. He has chosen the natural route. He is improving with every check up. I don't know his stage but, I know it was in several organs and, in his hip. He also had a softball size hard mass on his shoulder that was removed surgically. The only place that remains is the place in his hip. The last I heard it is getting smaller. He just this year did agree to a non-chemo, non-radiation drug trial. The drug is being trailed as an immune system booster. This appears to be shrinking the last of the cancer. We are excited. Through these years he has remained happy and, active.

  138. Janet I neglected to tell you on my comment earlier that my son-in-law's mom had Stage 4 breast cancer over 8 years ago. She had to endure surgery and rounds of chemo. She has had no reoccurrence. So there is hope! :) You and Larry have been on my mind all day. Cancer sucks.

  139. Dear Janet,
I have been reading you blog for some time, but have never commented... I deeply admire the simplicity, brevity, and authenticity that shines through all your posts. Your voice is honest and direct, and in a world filled with noise, it is like a clarion call. However, when I read the title of this post and saw the edges of the black background, it was (very) hard to continue reading... sending all best, wonderful, health-filled prayers for his complete recovery. 184. What devastating news. I am so sorry. You and Larry are in my prayers. I work at an academic medical center (though I am not a clinician) which is how I know of a procedure for peritoneal cancers called HIPEC. If your physician hasn't mentioned it, you may want to ask and see if Larry would be a candidate. I will pray for a good outcome. Please know that so many are thinking of you!
