Thank you & the Vintage Contessa

A thank you to everyone who took the time to send an email or comment here with your well wishes for Larry.  You have no idea what it feels like to have gotten (and still getting) your prayers and well wishes.  They have lifted me up in so many ways.  I would ask that you continue your good thoughts and prayers for us as they will be needed.  Yesterday he had his first chemo treatment and it went way better than expected.  This morning we go for another cat scan.  When things settle down I will post more about this but right now I'm pretty consumed with just keeps meds and appts. straight.

Please click over to the The Vintage Contessa and read her style series post on moi.  She has worked with me this last month knowing what we are going through.  She is such a sweetheart!  I hope you enjoy it, I'm clicking over now to read it for the first time.  xo

  1. I just read the blog article on The Vintage Contessa...it is wonderful & seems to capture you perfectly. I loved what she said about so many of us who feel that we "know" you...I believe that is a result of your openness & honesty on your blog. I can't remember when I first started following you, but I do know it has been over 6 years ago.

I will certainly continue to lift you & Larry up in prayer. Life is not fair, but it's usually through a crisis that we grow spiritually & become stronger than we could have imagined. God speed.

  9. Hi Janet, I think of you&Larry every day and hope that in challenging times you feel the love and support we are all sending. Thank you for taking the time to do Elizabeth’s post-so simple yet glamorous. I guess the first rule of fashion is to know and accept oneself and that comes thru in your style. Hugs. XO, Allegra

  10. My first husband was diagnosed with Stage IV cancer, so I have an idea what you and Larry are experiencing. I was diagnosed with breast cancer 14 years ago. By then I was a woman of faith, and my faith and the prayers of so many got me through. I'll be lifting you and Larry up in prayer. Take comfort and know you are loved by so many. Brenda

  12. Dear Janet - You look so beautiful in the bedroom photograph in your camel coat! I loved the Country Home article. I have been a reader of your blog almost since it began and it was nice to have a bit more information on the house, your purchase, the DIY history etc. So many times I was going to ask you if you could give us a floor plan of the house - I love it so much but couldn't envisage how it sat together - and how it was situated in the garden. Maybe, one day soon you could do that - if you feel it would be OK.

Anyway, thinking of you and Larry from across the Atlantic. Sending happy, loving vibes for a calm and clear path ahead. x

  16. darling AJJ. I too have been thinking of you and Larry so much. and definitely in my every prayer.
one of my dearest blogging friends and her daughter and son in law went through this when he was diagnosed the same as Larry only of the mouth. for the better part of last year it was like living in another world. chemo. stomach tube. meds. and the nightmare that is healing with that disease. but such strides are now being made! and finally last week they just got the news that he is now cancer free. no signs of it. stay strong darling. and take care of YOU as well as your best boy.
keep hearing the GOOD NEWS that's out there darling bean! sending love to you!
if you get a chance an excellent source for now is Key to Yourself by Dr. Venice Bloodworth.
I just heard audio of it. and the little book of it is on Amazon of course. it works and is worth checking on if you ever have the chance.
and it reminds me of you. and your way of living.
and now off to read the Contessa's post! XOXO

  18. My husband is a 17 year survivor of colon cancer and made a strong recovery - enjoyed paying Tennis well into his 80s. My daughter has also made a strong recovery from breast cancer after a year of surgery, chemo and radiation. We are grateful that we were able to be with her every day and provide support. I am hoping you will be extra kind to yourself, Janet, as you help your husband through his treatment. And of course I am hoping and praying for strength for you both, and for his recovery. Your blog is a treasure; thank you for continuing to stay in touch.

There are so very many wonderful people out there and I love that your readers (including me) care about you and Larry although the majority of us will never meet. I know you will keep us posted so we can pray for your specific needs.

  25. Last May I got what I thought was a sore throat. Throughout spring and summer, traveling, enjoying a newly earned retirement, I kept going for tests. In late July, I was diagnosed with fourth stage lymphoma and started therapy. I finished in November, and for now, am in remission.
People ask me about cancer. I tell them it's hundreds of diseases, each with it's own set of treatments. Everyone responds differently; no two experiences are alike. Follow your medical team's instructions and advice, but listen to your instincts. Accept help. Susan Gubar's NY Times column "Living with Cancer" is informative and comforting.
My thoughts, like those of your friends and followers, are with you, Janet.

  28. Such a terrific interview and a joy to read. I've alway admired your great style Janet. Whether it's your home, garden, or clothing. You have that great ease and confidence that I love. You won what you wear.

I will pray hard for Larry and for you, and all your loved ones. I wish no one had to go through what you two are. Cancer has affect our family five times thus far. I have a good idea how it devastates everyone who loves the person who's fighting the battle. It's tough to be strong and at times it takes a village to hold you up. I wish you strength, and I hope you & Larry can feel the power from those who care.

  32. Oh, I enjoyed reading your piece for the Contessa; terrific photos, too. Ahhhh, that incredible new closet of yours; I have closet envy.

I've been thinking about you and Larry a lot. What you're going thru is so...consuming. I do know what that is, to be helping somebody hands-on, as I did it for both of my ailing, elderly parents as their only child. I mean, I actually physically moved back into their house even though I had my own (and a husband) but it was just necessary for, well, close to a year (before I brought in the paid help). You and Larry did this of course for your FIL that time, too. I remember trying to juggle seventeen diff daily meds for my dad, exhausted from giving him breathing treatments in the night, and barely being able to concentrate; so afraid I'd mix up the meds, get it wrong. It's a lot of responsibility when you're already highly stressed and worried.

This is when you have to take good care of your own self, too, Janet. Larry is being closely monitored by his doctors, but who's monitoring you? I don't want you to get run down. It's great you're such a long-time healthy cook in the kitchen, which will of course help both of you. Try to get in enough sleep if you can. Maybe when Larry is resting, you can rest a bit, too; like a daytime time-out. I hope you can still take a daily walk but I know your routine is probably quite altered. The walking can rid you of negative energy, keep you limbered up if you're doing a lot of sitting lately, like at the medical facilities.

You are both in my daily prayers and I feel there's such promise/hope at Easter and, now, with Spring. My continued best/healing thoughts to you at such a really hard time in your lives. Any of us who've 'read' you for awhile know that you and Larry have been thru some other tough stuff and my impression is that you're strong people who will navigate this new journey in a sensible, intelligent, positive way. You have it in you to meet the challenges. I know you do. I believe it.

  39. Janet, it warmed my heart to read that Larry's first treatment went well. My only experience with what you and he now are managing was long ago but I still clearly recall the comfort brought about simply by having and enacting a plan and being once again to some degree in control of it. This seems a good beginning. I never will stop thinking of you two and your family day by day . . . may that help in its own way to bring energy and of course my love
