less is less

did you all have a lovely weekend?
on saturday while larry was hiking, i met some girl friends for lunch.
the weather was hot and i was super comfortable in my striped skirt and a tank top.
that was saturday.

sunday was a different story.
i don't know what has come over me (i blame hormones) but i got rid of more stuff in my house and basement.
alex came over and we filled his truck with stuff for him to sell at the rose bowl next weekend.

i got rid of...

vintage luggage
an old black vintage kitchen scale
vintage tea cups
cookbooks
books
rugs
various other junk including,
 fingers crossed, one rude commenter.

hope your monday is simply beautiful.

Should I go to the rose bowl and buy all of your stuff?

  2. Looking good.

Do you think anyone will buy the rude commenter?

My Monday is hinting at rain BUT it's still Monday! That's my fun day.

  3. It is a day off Monday for me, looks to be a beautiful day here on the central coast of California. I'm going to check out our local Goodwill store today...I have $15 bucks to blow so wish me luck! I am a new (and not rude) follower of your blog. LOVE IT! Great outfit by the way, casual and cool.

  4. You look fabulous! I am so jealous! Is not incredible how miserable some people must be that the only joy in life they get is making rude comments in someone's blog!! I feel sorry for those people. Life is simply too short to be a miserable pratt!

  5. Hahahaha! I hope you get rid of the one rude commenter :) I love your skirt so much!

  6. that's my motto too...I was crazy last yesterday putting things in the to-go pile. I feel so good though.
Now I think this is my favorite outfit. I'm still having trouble with my wardrobe...I can't seem to put the outfits together now that I'm down to hardly anything. Can you come help? I have lots of good vegan food! :)

Hope that commenter stays in the junk pile...

  7. the tank top is another great addition to the skirt. you look cool as a cucumber. i purged more this weekend as well. seems reducing the extraneous opens the mind to further possibilities, exploring new ways of looking at what is left, how it can be utilized. seems it has to be done in spurts. then the mind can refresh what it's looking at, so it can decipher what else could be eliminated, getting to the essence of things. just a observation.
good luck with the rose bowl sale.

  8. Hi Janet, I'm glad you're treating your rude anon with humour. Like Faux Fuchsia, you never said this was a blog about World Peace - just a place to share what you like with like-minded people. (Although, having said that, I think that it's a lovely peaceful corner of the internet, so there's that.)

  9. I LOVE this outfit! Absolutely fabulous, very simple but perfect . Where is the tank from, I like that it hides bra straps but still shows your arms. Just the right amount of coverage. Don't tell me it is $1find at the thrift shop :)

    2. Thank you! I'll have to pick some up as well - as replacements for what I have, and don't like =) Your blog is one of my inspirations for downsizing. I'm not done yet, but I'm making great progress!

  10. Love your skirt...Is it spring that makes us want to de-clutter and thin out? Not sure, but I'm in the same frame of mind as you....

  11. I was purging the non-clothing this weekend too. I might even reclaim a room when all is said and done :) I love your style and I'm inspired by your minimalist approach!

  12. I love this look too, I love vest tops and live in them during summer. Summer, huh, it's Baltic here I was in my puffs jacket this morning, it's so cold I got earache.

  13. This is crazy, I was getting rid of stuff yesterday too, I even dreamt about it last night. Rude commenters are a dime a dozen, I hope you get rid of yours!

  14. Hello Janet:
Well, if only a few thousand miles did not separate us from the 'Rose Bowl', then that is exactly where we should be heading. As we are sure you realise, we absolutely love what you write and admire your discipline, but for us, less definitely is less and more is rather better and even more is even better when it comes to 'stuff'. We know that we need help!!!

Like you, we have been enjoying wonderful weather here in Budapest and your stripy skirt and top would be perfect. We are so pleased not to be in England where snow has even been seen lately!!

  15. Janet you're giving yourself that gift of freeing up space...
nature abhors a vacuum so I'm thinking you've opened up some room for polite commenters and new followers :-)
You are looking as lovely as ever in your tank top and skirt.

I'd be really tempted to highjack that truck on it's way to the Rose Bowl and buy some of your castoffs!
I have a passion for black and vintage....

Our lily of the valley has gone mad in it's growth pattern and is all abloom and the scent is intoxicating...
I'd bring you a bunch if I lived closer.

  18. Enjoy your pictures...my husband and I are downsizing (children now adults) and moving from 3100 square feet to 1200 square feet after 16 years in this particular home. Also we are downsizing everything including our wardrobes. Your blog keeps inspiring me!

  19. Oh Janet, words cannot describe how much I love your outfit, I need a stripy maxi in my life!
Well done with the de-cluttering and hope you feel lots more cheerful today. x

  21. when i did a NOLS course twenty years ago, one of our instructors had the motto: go light & be happy.
like a song, it has stuck with me.

i have swung from less is more to more is more and i'm ready to swing back again.
your posts make me feel excitement {rather that dread} at the prospect.
plus, you look aDORable, as ever.

    buh-bye rude commenter : )

  22. You always inspire me. This week-end I was (again) cleaning out my closets and getting rid of more clothing that I was hanging on to "just in case". I always look forward to your posts to see what you are up to next.

  23. Well, I salute your decluttering on Sunday. It must have made you feel good!

  24. I am so torn on long, maxi skirts. Did them in the 70's and am debating if this is a trend I will miss. But you look wonderful, so casual and so chic. I may give them a second look. And there must be something in the air that wants us to declutter. I have just returned from getting a village garbage bag to use in cleaning out a portion of my attic. Rain is predicted tomorrow and I'm prepared.

  25. I love your look. I'm working on my arms so that I feel more comfortable in tank tops. Got any ideas? Your arms look fab. Oh and remember, jealousy is a disease. We have to feel sorry for people like that.

  26. Hi Janet :)
I was showing my daughter your blog (she is a fashion blogger, designer high style, for many years). She was commenting on what loyal followers you have, and what does it take to get that sort of following. She often asks me about my opinion because I read a lot of blogs - a wide assortment of topics; politics and science, to fashion and everything in between. We talked a long time about your blog and why we, your followers are so loyal to you. My conclusion, the draw is, that you have given us a peak into your every day life, in such a sweet unpretentious way, that we are charmed. As a society we are so "busy" we have become isolated from each other. You make us feel part of the inner circle. We dream of living a simple and elegant life and you have shown us how. I love every post and every picture. Thank you for making my world a better place.
    Sincerely,
    Miranda

  27. Hi Janet,
Love the outfit. I have similar pieces in my closet, so I can copy this one! Yeah me! Spent the evening in my basement last night due to tornado all around and took the opportunity to purge--I thought of you. So, happy that you might be free of that horrible commenter.

  30. I love your blog! I want to try the olive oil as body moisturizer tip you posted a while back, but I'm worried about the oil staining my clothes, especially silks or light colors. Have you had any problems with that?

  31. Love this! This is so my style. Casual elegance I call it :) And I'm really loving stripes right now. I have a similar striped maxi dress from anthropologie and it's my favorite thing. Lovely weather lately too!

  32. I love this look too Janet! AND I loved seeing your beautiful rain drenched roses:) I have already told you this but you definitely inspire me in many ways...from eating better to losing a few pounds to trying to live with less.... You seem elegant and graceful and REAL!

Unfortunately, in the 5+ years that I have been blogging..I have encountered some hateful commenters too. I finally stopped letting anonymous people comment. It was just too hurtful. I write about my family and it about killed me when someone commented on my son's very thin body. They blamed me. He had some serious health issues that we were doing everything we could to figure out and that one put me over the edge.

Anyway, I KNOW (am a Ph.D in marriage and family) that these people are really unhappy in their own lives and yes, probably jealous of your beautiful life (the parts you share with us anyway). Knowing that is one thing, reading the stinging comments and brushing them off is another. I think you would be much happier to disable anon comments. PLUS, it will annoy anon that she can no longer attempt to bully you.

    Have a peaceful day.

    Kim

  38. What a lovely spring look. I agree with the whole less is less concept. It amazes me how much we accumulate over time and the reluctancy of some people to throw anything out. I love getting rid of stuff and feng shui-ing my house. Minimalism and only having what you actually need feels great. From reading the comments above, I think you blog and posts are so popular because they have a great energy about them and remind people how to live simply but well. Keep deleting those negative posts. Fifi

  44. Hi Janet, yes I am loyal; you are in my top 3 reads, for a long time now. The conversation here the last few days has brought to mind the fact that what you create here on your blog is a most important story to those of us who want a narrative on fashion – the sense of playfulness and just about "anything goes" and you show us how to embrace the lifestyle you so eloquently share. The very things you adopt: garden, home, food and your brand of fashion, are inventive in a modern, authentic way and this sparks envy and want. I think you to be more original than many of your contemporaries, certainly me! I feel glad to come here and wish to see more raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens and just about anything else. So keep up the nice work, you have an important legacy as a blogger.

I love the tank top with the maxi skirt. Maybe because it shows off your great shape!

I think one great thing about decluttering is that you are only keeping what you truly love! So I guess that explains why you always look amazing in everything you wear. :)
