my new drapes.
i never play the lottery but i always tell my friends that if i ever won the lottery the first thing i would do would be to buy gorgeous drapes.
i never play the lottery but i always tell my friends that if i ever won the lottery the first thing i would do would be to buy gorgeous drapes.
well guess what? i did not win the lottery.
but i did sell a ton of stuff on ebay and i made enough to order these drapes.
nob hill from pottery barn.
they are described as a chinoiserie pattern of irises, peonies and orange blossoms.

to some of you, spending $600 on drapes is not a lot.
to me it is a small fortune.
but they were worth every last penny.
they are perfect - for me.
they are linen and lined!
do you notice the wall sconces?
i've had these antique iron sconces (i paid a whopping $2 for both) for a long time and think they now look perfect here.
the colors and texture of the linen make me want to cry with joy. i really can't believe they are mine.
we were out grocery shopping yesterday and i told larry we had to hurry up to get home so i could stare at my drapes.
i swear i said that.
and i meant it.

i'm linking this post to nita's mod vintage life today.
i hope that it's ok because i'm not sure there is anything mod about these.
i'm working on pillows for the sofa on the other side of the room.
when i'm done i'll post them too.
have an absolutely beautiful week.

Total eye candy. Hey, we live in our homes, so they need to be beautiful. Those drapes sure make the room dreamy. Score.
ReplyDeleteI do get your happiness with your curtains they are perfect!
ReplyDeleteJanet - Your drapes are absolutely beautiful. I've always loved this room, but the drapes add even more to it. The color is subtle and the pattern pretty and interesting. You have a great eye and great taste.
ReplyDeleteDeborah
and they're more special because you worked to get them. They're beautiful! Love them with all the white and the dark pieces in the room ... it's all very classic and vintage gardeny.
ReplyDeleteGood job! :)
Your drapes are perfect, and I also love "I walk the line" too.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your joy.
Janet, I understand your joy. These ARE gorgeous. (I also understand the cost factor.)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful. Is that straight out of the package or did you have to iron/steam them?
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't have expected this color with the black and white but it's really nice. It's the perfect pattern for your gardener's cottage and a great reward for all the work that goes into selling on ebay.
They are perfection! I love your blog and your home!
ReplyDeletestevo - straight out of the package.
ReplyDeleteThey are absolutely stunning- I love them!! I have been looking for some like this for a long time. They suit your room perfectly. Enjoy!!
ReplyDeleteThey are so perfect! And I love that you sold some other things on eBay to make them possible. That's a good rule to follow even if money isn't an issue... to keep us focused on only having those things around us that we truly love.
ReplyDeleteThe linkup worked perfect! I love those drapes. I need drapes too and am on the lookout for nice but cheap options. I think $600 is a lot to spend although I know they can cost much much more. A little trip to the Curtain Exchange taught me that. These are fine for Mod Mix Monday...they are something new mixed in with your vintage things. So they qualify. Thanks for linking up. I can't wait to see the pillows.
ReplyDeleteThey are beautiful, the pattern works so well in the muted tones. You are a great decorator Janet.
ReplyDeleteThey are gorgeous! I've never spent that much on drapes either but I say if you've earned it then buy what you love. You're worth it. Just think of all that hair colour you're not buying any more!
ReplyDeletexo
So jealous....those drapes are too amazing!
ReplyDeleteI'll bet Larry wasn't the least bit surprised when you said that was he?
ReplyDeleteThey are luscious, and yes expensive.
But you'll have them for a long time and love them deeply, madly.
xo jane
What would we do without Pottery Barn? Your room looks like it could be in their catalog!
ReplyDeleteI love the beautiful, serene way you decorate. I didn't think you could do much to improve the look of your dining room - I was surprised to click on the post and see how gorgeous the room looks with the new drapes. I have total drape envy!! Must look into selling on ebay...
ReplyDeleteBarbara
Gorgeous they really set off your fantastic room.
ReplyDeleteI love the drapes. I agree that is a lot to pay for them, but you earned them. I noticed the sconces before you mentioned them. Your home is lovely.
ReplyDeleteAs everyone else has mentioned already-- the drapes are perfect! They add a nice visual texture to this gorgeous room. I love how you made the purchase happen with a little ingenuity and work. For me, that is the only way to splurge. I would sit and stare at them, too!
ReplyDeletexo,
Anne
They look great. I am so glad you love them. Where did the black toile ones move to? I bet you had a plan for them! I love that you made me laugh (and identify with) at your 'hurry home to stare at my new drapes" comment. Thank you for that. Have a beautiful day.
ReplyDeletethey are gorgeous Janet!! the linen and the brown are perfect (black would have been like, enough already;) these are the perfect choice and "make" the room! so happy for you... enjoy! guess we all know what you'll be doing today- staring at your curtains!! I would too;)
ReplyDeletexxj.
I love them! Perfect length too, did you have to hem them?
ReplyDeleteI invested in gorgeous silk draperies last year. I'm so glad I did, they make all the difference to a room.
They are indeed perfect!!! Stare and enjoy. Your dining room has long been a favorite of mine since you first posted it. Love!!!
ReplyDeleteI love it that you couldn't wait to get home and stare at them! They look like they cost 600.00 or MORE!
ReplyDeleteVery beautiful. I bought a coal scuttle last week on ebay (old, wood) and after waxing it I can't stop staring at it too, so I know exactly what you mean.
ReplyDeleteLinen drapes are luxurious Janet. I can see why you are so excited, they are truly beautiful, the muted shades are so elegant.
ReplyDeleteScarlet O'Hara would be envious!
Can't wait to see those pillows!
You should feel thrilled with your new find Janet~ they are gorgeous and just perfect in your room. YAY!! ;)

A good choice!
Lieve groet, Madelief x
Worth every penny...er...dollar!
ReplyDeleteYour draperies are absolutely gorgeous!!! I would swoon every time I saw them if they were mine! I'm so happy for you, that you were able to get them!
ReplyDeleteHugs, Cindy
The drapes are gorgeous. Love that pattern. They enhance your room in just the right way! I don't blame you at all for being over the moon about them.
ReplyDeletexo
Claudia
They're gorgeous. And you know what else I like in there, besides everything, your dining room table. I love the table + drapes + hats together. Swoon. $600 would be a big deal to me too.
ReplyDeleteThe drapes look beautiful (I am a fan of Chinoiserie) and the sconces look great as well. I passed up some similar ones at a garage sale a few months ago and now wish I hadn't.
ReplyDelete$600 is not too much to spend if you love them and get to enjoy them every day. :)
Linda
The drapes are stunning. Just last evening I was sitting in my living room thinking that I wish I had an unpatterned rug (mine has a bold pattern) in the living room so I could do a patterned drape. The room is too small for both! It is like you read my mind! I was thinking of a toile, like Trina used in the baby nursery, but this is even better. LOVE it.
ReplyDeletexoxo Terri
You made a very wise purchase! Continue to enjoy Janet!
ReplyDeletewhen i just popped in the first thing I thought was "she has new drapes". They are lovely. good for you.
ReplyDeleteGo Janet, Go Janet, Get your Drapes oooN!
ReplyDeleteThey look really pretty. I love them with your wicker table. And, you deserve a splurge especially one so simple that will bring you so much joy and pleasure.
I love that you paid for them with Ebay sales :)
Julie
very, very nice, well done!
ReplyDeleteI love how they look~and I make custom drapes for a living!!
ReplyDeleteThey are beautiful! I love them!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous drapes, but what is even better is that they make you so happy! That alone is worth the price!
ReplyDeleteLike the drapes, love, love love the wicker table. Both look like very good investments.

Those curtains look great they go really well with your room.
ReplyDeleteI love the drapes, in fact I love the whole room. It is classical but not fussy and I love that.
ReplyDeleteThey look fabulous - I can see why you are so thrilled...just the finishing touch for the room!!
ReplyDeleteHi Janet,
ReplyDeleteI've visited your blog at least three times and have not had a chance to leave a comment. I can see why you are smitten with your new drapes. I never thought your room was missing anything, but now that I see them....they really add so much. I love the sconces too! Can you believe it...$2? Wow, what a find. My favorite photo is the one with the blue and white jar on your table with the lime hydrangea, the beautifully draped window behind and you can just see the sconce next to your topiary. Now your room is perfect!! I'll bet your enjoying them right now as the light this time of day is so lovely.
xo annie
They are gorgeous and how refreshing to read that someone was willing to sacrifice time and possessions to obtain them--not simply go into debt with a "want it now" attitude. Very motivational, Janet. xxBliss
ReplyDeleteOh, the curtains are absolutely BEAUTIFUL! They are perfect... What an excellent choice in curtains. Love them!
ReplyDeleteEnjoy them each moment. I enjoy looking at them as well! Thank you for sharing!

The drapes are lovely and go in your room perfectly, I know that because I have been staring at them myself........
ReplyDeletei am in love with your fabulous house! they look great. i totally get wanting to be back home so you can stare at them. :)
ReplyDeletetera
Your dining room is stunning. Completely in love with the curtains!!!
ReplyDeleteThere is nothing better in life than linen, I think. The pattern is lovely. One day I will learn to decorate with minimalism, like you.
ReplyDeleteCamille
I love the drapes and I'd want to get home to stare at them too! $600 is a lot but they are worth it.
ReplyDeleteThe whole room is soothing and divine.
Love to Larry x
It is interesting to think how overpowering they would be in black and white and how introducing a soft middle tone into a room with so much black and white balances it all together.
ReplyDeleteThey're fabulous Janet. I think that one of the Gucci's said "price is forgotten long after quality is remembered". May you Enjoy them .. for a long time!
ReplyDeleteAbsolute perfect finishing touch. They are GORGEOUS! Totally worth the price.
ReplyDeleteanon - i so agree with you.
ReplyDeleteGORGEOUS!
ReplyDeleteAll the best,
Priscilla
I love that you love your curtains so much, that you just want to stare at them, that is so adorable, and I totally get that feeling!! They are utterly gorgeous, now we all get to stare too! xx
ReplyDeleteisn't it lovely that something so simple can make us so happy? and they are beautiful and they do!
ReplyDeletei love the wooden floor, the green of the topiaries and the white at the table and then the gorgous print and texture at the windows...
perfect! just exquisite.
good job ajj.
love,
tammy j
A perfect hue, they hang beautifully, a nice finishing touch.
ReplyDeleteYou did it. Earned those lovely drapes. You are so correct. They are absolutely perfect. Congratulations. You inspire me. I want to sell.
ReplyDeleteLinda
Stunning in a word. And something this beautiful that gives you so much pleasure and will continue to do so daily is most definitely worth it. Every last $. XX and p.s. love the pics of you in the Kaftan and you have amazing skin Janet, just amazing. xx
ReplyDeleteLove, love, love it and the link, too.
ReplyDeleteSheree
You have amazing vision to realize how great these are in you room. The soft brown and scale of the print-- perfection! Now the pillows...
ReplyDeleteI like them. I'm so monotone...the drapes always match the carpet! I need pattern!
ReplyDeleteYour room looks amazing! I don't have any curtains in my house, because even Pottery Barn/Restoration Hardware draperies are so expensive! So I hear where you're coming from. But, well done!
ReplyDeleteYou are an incredible designer.
ReplyDeletei never would have thought of those drapes. Just perfect!
I think I might be in love with your drapes, too. They look perfect in the room. The entire room is very beautiful. I love the clean uncluttered feel of it. Shannon
ReplyDeletewhat stunning curtains, I want some too. do you ever pull them closed to get the 'full' effect? I haven't won the lottery either and I don't even know what i could sell on eBay! i'll just keep looking. Jx
ReplyDeleteJust found your blog, your home IS LOVELY, I am going to be looking through a lot of older posts, but first, I have to comment real quick. I just read you olive oil post, yes, it is good for the skin for all the wonderful reasons you describe, and you can mix it with salt or sugar and make a wonderful scrub for heels or dry areas (not the face) . . BUT for your face I would encourage you to use ORGANIC JOJOBA OIL, olive oil is good, but for the face jojoba rules in my opinion. It is the oil (actually a wax, but it is in liquid form) that is the closest in structure to the oils in your skin so it won't clog your pores at all, and is actually very good for your skin if it is oily (balances things) AND if your skin is dry. I encourage you to try it, it is WONDERFUL.
ReplyDeleteI am not an jojoba oil seller or maker or in the jojoba "field" (literally and figuratively) at all, just love the stuff.
Dear Janet,
ReplyDeleteI think the drapery panels look better in your room than on the Pottery Barn website (they should link to you, not the other way round...). Very lovely and subdued and they look very nice with the bamboo (?) or matchstick blinds.
Having read your blog, I suspect that there is a story behind the matchstick blinds too. Do you mind telling me where you got those and if you are happy with them? I have to replace some that were in my house when I bought it (but have since broken) and am overwelmed by the choices/prices/etc for something that seemed so straightforward
ps--bravo grey!
Hello janet,
ReplyDeleteAll going well here, Siggi has relinquished the computer and I can blog again in my own name.
I LOVE the drapes.
Janet, honestly - you have the most exquisite taste.
you are such a role model for me.
love
Lou

Absolute perfection...just like you sweetie!
ReplyDeleteWhat did ya sell on ebay? What did I miss ? Damn!
xo k
I featured you today at Mod Mix Monday!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous drapes and gorgeous room.
ReplyDeleteanon - i got the bamboo shades from lowes. they were very inexpensive. i've only had a problem with one of them. and if i wasn't so lazy i could just take it back and exchange it. overall i like them v much.
ReplyDeleteI love these too. They are perfect in your beautiful room.
ReplyDeleteThey are so gorgeous!!!
ReplyDeleteAnd how the sconces match :) sweet!
OMG! I think I'm gonna be here all night! Your rooms are stunning. I love these curtains! And yes, $600 on drapes is a small fortune for me, too. I found some that are similar for cheaper, but gosh I love yours!
ReplyDeleteJanet:
ReplyDeleteIs your woodwork painted simply white as well? Did you go with flat for the walls and semi gloss on the woodwork? I'm thinking of doing that in my home and wondered if that's what you have in this gorgeous photo.
Daryl
hi daryl!
ReplyDeletethe wall are flat and the trim is semi-gloss. the whole house is in ben moore's simply white.:)
