i'm starving - spicy asian slaw*

spicy asian slaw salad

i was sitting around the other day starving for a crunchy salad.  i went on-line and found 2 or 3 different recipes that sounded good and that i had the basic ingredients for.  i combined the recipes and came up with this and now i'm addicted to it.  it is deeeeelish and good enough to serve to company.

i'm really watching my budget now because i want my house painted white and i need that awning too.  so this is how it goes...

4 c shredded cabbage (i used half red and green)
1 c shredded carrot
2 T chopped cilantro
1/2 c peanuts
1/2 c dried cranberries

~dressing~

in a medium sized mixing bowl wisk...

3 T peanut butter
 3 T rice wine vinegar
2 T agave syrup
1 T sesame seed oil (i honestly think you could get away w/using vegetable oil)
1 T soy sauce
1/2 - 1 t red pepper flakes - optional
1/2 t ground ginger - optional

and how about some fresh baked bread to go with...

ever since meg from minimalist woman told me about this easy recipe i have been making my own.  this bread is so easy and it is delicious.  there are only 4 ingredients - flour, 1/4 t yeast, water and salt.   and no kneading.  all you need is time and since i have way more time than money, it's perfect for me.  it costs less than 50 cents a loaf to make.

*no animals were harmed making these dishes

alex bought me this 70's silk blouse for mothers day and i thought i'd share it with you.

have a purty weekend

  7. Oh, those recipes look fabulous. I will have to try them both. Really, if a bread needs kneading, I won't even bother ;).

Love the shirt and I have to agree with the white exterior. I do love your red home; but, thought about red for our future little place and felt that would be so restrictive. With white, you can do so many other things to bring in some color: flowers, throws, pillows, etc. Good choice. It will be wonderful and classy, just like you!

  8. LOVE the blouse! Pretty and fun! You look fantastic! And now yet another great recipe! Thank you Thank you. It's like Christmas time everytime I read the Gardener's Cottage--always such lovely gifts that you share. I would make that salad today, but I just put on a pot of veggie soup and used my only cabbage. It's a rainy day here-definitely not going out to the store, but I will soon. I don't know HOW to make bread, but Spicy Asian Slaw Salad...I can. :-) Thank you so much, Janet! -Suzanne in Illinois

  11. Hello Janet:
Well, cabbage [red or white] is a staple of the Hungarian diet but rarely does it look as appetizing as in your crunchy salad. East meets west, we think!

Your vintage silk blouse looks wonderful. What an absolutely perfect gift. With the tie tied as a bow you could easily pass for Piaf...so very chic and French!!

  13. I adore crunchy asian salads...
I am very hungry just observing this image.

I think I'll make this one sometime this week.

I know some heritage homeowners around here who paint one side of their house at a time...
you might start with the front and the awning and work your way around as you can afford the paint and have the time.

It might sound quirky...just putting it out there Janet!

Even at 7am that salad looks delish! I'm also going to try making bread too....you're right that does take a lot of time, 14-20 hours. I have to try it...will let you know if I have as much success.

You look gorgeous in your new/70's blouse. What a wonderful gift from your son.

  26. Hi Janet. You should check out the cookbook that the NY Times article is from. "My Bread" by Jim Lahey. It is Fabulous! The pizza dough is the best (I sub-in whole wheat flour and a bit of cornmeal and oregano to mine). You'll never go back to TJ's dough after making your own. Friday nights are now homemade pizza nights at our house and hubby won't even touch pre-made pizza now.

  27. hi martha, i will check it out. i only use tj's dough in an emergency. currently i use cpk's dough recipe but i will check this out, thanks.

  28. I love this kind of salad. I really don't like peanut butter very much but am a freak for any kind of food that includes peanut butter in the sauce. I started mixing up this kind of sauce to put over my chinese vegetable medley when at the house. So good. You always share the best food.

  29. Delish! I make a similar salad with TJ's chile-lime peanuts for an extra kick.
