small but charming

This is a story of Chinoiserie and Friendship. As you may recall, a couple of weeks ago I was bitten by the Chinoiserie bug by Beth at Chinoiserie Chic. I've been mad for it ever since. The very sweet Jane from the adorable blog Small But Charming (another great name for a blog) left me a comment saying she had wallpapered a small entryway in her home nine years ago and has never tired of it. She also said she had a small amount leftover and asked if I wanted it. Did I! So she wrapped it up and sent it across the country to me. The above pic is the actual wallpaper. The colorway could not be more perfect for my house. A friendship is born.

This is the tiny back entry to our home. It is so small it's almost impossible to photograph. It's too small for a table or really anything on the walls because you have to brush up against them just to walk by. I've never known what to do with this little area.

There wasn't a lot of wallpaper to work with so we decided to put up the old beadboard that we had removed from the front porch when we took down a wall and opened it up.

As you can see this is already a huge improvement.

Then we put up the wallpaper. It was a total of 5 panels that went up. We had about 18" left over, that's it.

I took down the awful little glass globe and put up a paper lantern. This will do until my shopping ban is over and then I'd love to find a little red lantern to put in it's place.

I think this now qualifies as truly Small but Charming, don't you?

  7. And one more thing... in my Dallas house I had black and white toile wallpaper in my guest bath. The wallpaper installer even papered the light switch and outlet covers (matching the pattern exactly to the wallpaper at that point in the pattern) to make them go away! So maybe that's what you can do with the extra 18"!!

  10. OMG it looks so good. Love the bead board, love the lantern, love that you two got cracking and got it right up! You only received it a couple of days ago. Unbelievable.

I knew blogging made our worlds bigger, who knew it made them prettier. And, of course, I love all the gifts from your house :)

    Love this post. xoxo Jane

  13. The wallpaper is perfect - the little touch of interest needed to create a welcoming entrance. I think the beadboard idea was genius, so that you only had to cover the top part of the wall.

  16. And another thing (which is completely unrelated to this post)...

I want to thank you for your tip (which I think you left as a comment on Faux Fuchsia's blog) about not moisturising your nose. Even though I am almost 40 I still have quite an oily t-zone. I stopped moisturising my nose about a week ago when I first read the tip and I am so thrilled with the result.

My nose is not suffering from not being moisturised, but is happy and shine-free! I am beyond happy! In all the years and appointments of dermatologists and beauty therapists no-one has ever told me this.

    Thank you!

  24. Found your wonderful blog just recently - how did I miss it before? - and love it! If I were still in California you and I would be friends, I'm sure of it! LOVE everything you've done in your home, and as an avid gardener (how I found your blog in the first place), I LOVE your gardens, too. I have a little cottage very similar to yours (except mine is now in NC)and I have had so much fun making it and the gardens truly mine, just like you. Keep up the great work and thanks for sharing it with us! Karin

  26. It looks great! You really have been bitten with the chinoiserie bug! I'm also so impressed that you and the hubby are so handy. Wallpaper seems so daunting! I've been toying with the idea of trying that removable kind in a closet or powder room --still haven't found the courage or energy :)

  28. Dear Janet, that wallpaper is divine, I love the little man who is flying through the air doing some sort of kung fu move, so sweet. The paper looks brilliant in your hallway, and am so impressed with your decorating skills, the thought of doing anything with wallpaper terrifies me I am so not handy. I continue to be impressed also with your no shopping ban, keep it up, you are doing so well! Bx

Sorry I've been so absent lately. I tried to comment here a few days ago but my internet was acting up and then it was back to work, work, work. I've never been so busy quitting a job before! Hope all is well with you and that you have a great, fun weekend planned.
Thanks again for your inspiration to make even the most seemingly insignificant space a real showstopper.
