This is a story of Chinoiserie and Friendship. As you may recall, a couple of weeks ago I was bitten by the Chinoiserie bug by Beth at Chinoiserie Chic. I've been mad for it ever since. The very sweet Jane from the adorable blog Small But Charming (another great name for a blog) left me a comment saying she had wallpapered a small entryway in her home nine years ago and has never tired of it. She also said she had a small amount leftover and asked if I wanted it. Did I! So she wrapped it up and sent it across the country to me. The above pic is the actual wallpaper. The colorway could not be more perfect for my house. A friendship is born.
This is the tiny back entry to our home. It is so small it's almost impossible to photograph. It's too small for a table or really anything on the walls because you have to brush up against them just to walk by. I've never known what to do with this little area.
There wasn't a lot of wallpaper to work with so we decided to put up the old beadboard that we had removed from the front porch when we took down a wall and opened it up.

I would say Small but Ablsolutely Friggin' Adorable!
ReplyDeleteI agree with Steve at Urban Cottage !!!! ELLEN
ReplyDeleteQuestion....where are you getting the Bamboo shades.....Ellen
ReplyDeletesteve - you kill me.
ReplyDeleteellen - husband got them at lowes for about $25 a piece.
OhMyGosh.... if that's not the cutest, I don't know what is!!! Love the story, love the beadboard, love the new light fixture, love the wallpaper!! It's all perfection! What a sweetheart Jane is!
ReplyDeletejoan
p.s. oh, and love the husband (I assume that's the husband?!) hanging the wallpaper!!
Oh - it looks fantastic - perfect for you!
ReplyDeleteAnd one more thing... in my Dallas house I had black and white toile wallpaper in my guest bath. The wallpaper installer even papered the light switch and outlet covers (matching the pattern exactly to the wallpaper at that point in the pattern) to make them go away! So maybe that's what you can do with the extra 18"!!

Hi! I am speechless....just when I thought I couldn't possibly love your home anymore than I already do....you post this!
ReplyDeleteThe change is amazing - love the wallpaper, really love it with the beadboard and the lantern is the cherry on top! You outdid yourself with this one and what a sweet sweet girl Jane is.

joan - i'll get the husband right on that. he will be thrilled.
ReplyDeletepink rose cottage - thank you!
sarah - thanks too, did you get my email on the lavender?
OMG it looks so good. Love the bead board, love the lantern, love that you two got cracking and got it right up! You only received it a couple of days ago. Unbelievable.
ReplyDeleteI knew blogging made our worlds bigger, who knew it made them prettier. And, of course, I love all the gifts from your house :)
Love this post. xoxo Jane
Oh my gosh, Janet! I love, love, love this transformation. The inspiration - the wallpaper - is perfect. And the addition of the beadboard just makes it all click.
ReplyDeleteBravo!
xo
Claudia
OMG what a truly charming space indeed! I LOVE IT!!! Have a great week :o)

The wallpaper is perfect - the little touch of interest needed to create a welcoming entrance. I think the beadboard idea was genius, so that you only had to cover the top part of the wall.
ReplyDeleteLooks spectacular, really great ! Gina
ReplyDeleteBravo Janet. You are truly inspirational. And all on a shopping ban!
ReplyDeleteAnd another thing (which is completely unrelated to this post)...
ReplyDeleteI want to thank you for your tip (which I think you left as a comment on Faux Fuchsia's blog) about not moisturising your nose. Even though I am almost 40 I still have quite an oily t-zone. I stopped moisturising my nose about a week ago when I first read the tip and I am so thrilled with the result.
My nose is not suffering from not being moisturised, but is happy and shine-free! I am beyond happy! In all the years and appointments of dermatologists and beauty therapists no-one has ever told me this.
Thank you!
Yes - it's just lovely. The blinds look great too.
ReplyDeleteI adore the hall, small but mighty!
ReplyDeleteHave you had you hair cut? It looks that way from the photo...
I think you are having a lot of fun, good for you!
Hugs
I love it! I would love to wallpaper, but I just don't know if I would be good at it! Yours is perfect and will look great with a red lantern.
ReplyDeleteMichelle
Fantastic! Isn't Jane the best!
ReplyDeleteOh so love the paper and what you have done to the entrance hallway - perfection! And great teamwork there Janet!
ReplyDeletelove it!!!! most adorable doorway award definitely goes to you!
ReplyDeleteWow! It looks SO good! What a difference a little friendship can make :)
ReplyDeletePS. Red lantern? Divine. Shopping moratorium is how much longer??!
looks great!!!

Found your wonderful blog just recently - how did I miss it before? - and love it! If I were still in California you and I would be friends, I'm sure of it! LOVE everything you've done in your home, and as an avid gardener (how I found your blog in the first place), I LOVE your gardens, too. I have a little cottage very similar to yours (except mine is now in NC)and I have had so much fun making it and the gardens truly mine, just like you. Keep up the great work and thanks for sharing it with us! Karin
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful transformation Janet! It's absolutely stunning. And once again, you've completely inspired me. I really must wallpaper something!!
ReplyDeletexoxoTrina
It looks great! You really have been bitten with the chinoiserie bug! I'm also so impressed that you and the hubby are so handy. Wallpaper seems so daunting! I've been toying with the idea of trying that removable kind in a closet or powder room --still haven't found the courage or energy :)
ReplyDeletefiona - i'm so happy you like that tip. i've never seen a wrinkly nose!
ReplyDeletehostess - yes, a little shorter for the summer.
slim - ha, only 10 more months to go, if i make it!
everyone else - thank you, i couldn't have done it w/o jane and husband.
Dear Janet, that wallpaper is divine, I love the little man who is flying through the air doing some sort of kung fu move, so sweet. The paper looks brilliant in your hallway, and am so impressed with your decorating skills, the thought of doing anything with wallpaper terrifies me I am so not handy. I continue to be impressed also with your no shopping ban, keep it up, you are doing so well! Bx
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely a great transformation...really small and charming! And all that without shopping? Quite impressive Janet!
ReplyDelete-marie
Love the new wallpaper-very chic!
ReplyDeleteJanet! This looks fabulous! How about Small but Fabulous. Charming is nice, but it doesn't do this entryway justice. What a great idea to put up the wainscoting too.
ReplyDeleteDeborah
Janet! I love this story!! It really looks awesome!!! From the charming old beadboard to the shade, perfect, perfect, perfect!! Now off to look again!
ReplyDeleteLonden

ReplyDeleteIt really is wonderful. The idea of a red lantern would be perfect.
ReplyDeleteFantastic! I wish we lived closer - I'd love to visit you and see your house in real life! You've inspired me - now I need to get on the stick and start work around my house. Unless you'd like to come visit and do it?

ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful friend to send that to you right across the country!
Hi Janet! Absolutely beautiful space! So smart to use bits and leftovers in such a way. It must make you very happy every time you pass through that door.
ReplyDeleteSorry I've been so absent lately. I tried to comment here a few days ago but my internet was acting up and then it was back to work, work, work. I've never been so busy quitting a job before! Hope all is well with you and that you have a great, fun weekend planned.
Thanks again for your inspiration to make even the most seemingly insignificant space a real showstopper.
Janet, that is simply perfect!! Lovely space...makes me smile...
ReplyDeleteHope you are well - xo Terri
