October Goals

The road leading to our cottage is so pretty this time of year.

1.  Continue working in the garden bc with cooler weather it's a lot more pleasureable.

2.  Start thinking about my Thanksgiving menu and table ideas. Watch this space bc I have a beautiful table setting up my sleeve.

3.  Clean and polish all summer shoes.  Wrap in tissue paper and put away.  Same with summer bags.  Thoroughly empty, wipe down and stuff with tissue paper and place back in its dust bag. Take anything to cobbler that needs fixing.  When I do this then next season as I unwrap everything, it feels sorta special.

4. My yoga wear is pretty shabby these days.  One top is too big and one pant is too small. What?  Anyway I tend to wear all black so replacements will be easy.

5.  Now that the basement has been sorted yet again, I will be listing at least 5 things on eBay so I need to get on that asap. Listing things on eBay is always a pain but using my cellphone to do so makes it a lot easier.  When I have them listed I'll provide a link in case you need some of my junk.

6.  With all that being said I want to slow down and do less.  You know it makes sense.

What are your October Goals?  I'm so glad I'm doing this bc it really made me get things DONE around here.  Do share how it is going for you.  x

  1. Ditto-as hard as it is to imagine, time to button things up here in the Midwest before winter and the holidays-wish time would sloooooow down!

  2. Taking things to the cleaners and the cobblers makes such good sense. Why can't I get myself to do that! Our weather here is so fickle putting summer clothes away too soon never quite works. The drive to your home is heavenly and your dream coat is my dream coat!!

    1. thank you cindy. i know it's a bit tricky when it comes to seasonal changes in southern california but i know i won't be wearing summer dresses and sandals. i switch to jeans and loafers with tees or a light sweater. i think i'm more inland than you tho. it gets quite cold at night and early mornings. x

  3. So much to do, so little time. I know I achieve more when I plan, so I guess that's my main goal for this month. Get my act together.
Just wanted to say it's really lovely seeing you posting again. I always feel happy to see something pop up in my blog feed and know that I can look forward to reading your updates.
    All the best,
    Susie

  5. I’m wondering how you clean and polish your shoes? Do you make your own polish, or can you recommend one without scary ingredients? I’ve just been putting away my spring/summer shoes and accessories. I love the idea of preparing them so that you’re excited to unwrap them next year. You’ve inspired me to put a little love into the process.

    1. i don't really use polish. i just clean them with a damp cloth and a little soap too. then i wipe them clean and just buff them with a soft cloth. it's a good way to see up close if a buckle or handle is getting loose. i'd rather get them fixed right away instead of them breaking beyond repair. i really do do this. i enjoy unwrapping them so much! i'm a weirdo. xo

  6. My current closet is smaller than yours so changing out clothes for the season is a must. I already removed my summer clothes and have been wearing my spring/autumn wear but with tomorrow's high forecast at 51 degrees, it is time for me to pull out the long sleeves and sweaters. I always go through and weed out items before putting away, but also go through items I bring out and donate anything I don't think will get used much.

Years ago you briefly used an old pottery barn duvet cover that I fell in love with. I searched the internet trying to find one like it but never did. How thrilled I was when you listed some of your "junk" on ebay and I was able to get it!

  7. I've been decluttering like a mad women. My MIL walked in and said. Are you moving??? So that made me happy because I've obviously made some headway. I'm also figuring out how to simplify my Christmas - I wrote a detailed journal of how last years went (not good!) and so I'm determined to do better this year. Love your new format and love your wisdom. Thank you!

  9. Oh, you are so inspirational. I have never done the cleaning up that you do each season. BUT, I don't know if it counts, but I have a wonderful organizer and I'm going to have her help me organize not only my closets but also the studio. I must take before and after photos. I do need someone to help me let go of stuff and take it away. My hats off to you.

  10. Happy Fall, Happy October! While it feels far from autumn bliss here in Texas, at least it is no longer blazing hot. Yesterday I dragged the last hug pile of branch cuttings from the backyard for pick up today, then raked and swept what it left behind. I must have been out there a while and looked a bit disheveled in the process, because a nice neighbor brought me iced peach tea with a sprig of mint. How cool is that?

Like you, Janet, we continually look to lighten the household of items we no longer use that someone else might enjoy. It's rewarding to see the results, to feel lighter personally.

As for plans for the month, I continue my adventures in homemade food and ingredients. Making yeast bread is the number one priority. It's still pretty new to me, so it's artisan breads that I make. I've made Ciabatta twice and am ecstatic with the results. Now I'm going to try a recipe for a cheater's sourdough and my adaptation of a wheat skillet bread (the original recipe turned out way too dense for my taste). There are also chai and pumpkin scone recipes to be tested, vegan potstickers, stews and other assorted fun food to make...all while I await the results of my first attempt at homemade vanilla extract (set to be fully ready in December).

I wish you and your readers a calm and restful, cozy and enjoyable fall season. Cheers, Ardith

  11. I think my October goal is to just settle my brain. If I can do that, I can be more productive, with anything. It's hard not to take the news of our world to heart; feel wary and on-alert (edgy) ... which is stressful. And stress makes everything worse. It seems like every week, something awful happens ... and the 24-hr news makes sure we know about it. It's this constant challenge to stay in balance. I think my biggest antidote is to just get busy and keep busy.

But I can't think of Thanksgiving yet. (Soon!)

  12. I love your outfit and seeing California! And I adore wearing white and camle and even cream--all winter, at least when the weather is dry. I need to set some October goals!

  13. October is my favorite month. Though I do love the hot of summer, I enjoy the cooler tones of October (cooler is all relative to Texas, which means not 102!) Hurricane Harvey shifted out pespective and priorities dramatically. We purged so much that we are now in the next phase. We planned 2 trips, 3rd in progress and we are selling out house, searching for a smaller footprint for bigger living! I do like Halloween but we kept it very simple this year, with some lights and a few pumpkins and one scary black cat. I have been loving softer, comfortable clothes right now. I am down with leggins, a long shirt and some flip flops. I am letting life come to me and getting up and living more each day. I have nestled into the hum of life and I love it!

  15. I love your style. It's classy and elegant. I rarely see anyone dressed classy and elegant when I go out. It's mind boggling what people wear out in public these days. The news is so sad. Every day there's something more to be sad about it seems. You just can't dwell on it or you could sink into a "why bother with anything" mode.
