country living

What a surreal feeling seeing my house photographed and styled like this.  I have yet to see the actual magazine yet as I am not a subscriber but I'm sure I will within a few days as it hits the newstand. Stephen Andrew Jones sent me these from his online subscription. Doesn't the porch look beautiful? I wish it looked like this now instead of being littered with shoes, boots, flip flops, leaves and dust. Do you notice my blue record cabinet and my antique bamboo plant stand that is normally in my kitchen?  Everything here is mine except they brought in some plants, the love seat cushion and small pillow purchased from World Market.

The week they shot the house it was quite cold and dreary.  But there was a moment of sunshine and that's when they got this exterior shot which I think is lovely.

The photo of Larry and I was taken on the last day in the last hour.  It was freezing outside, I didn't have a drop of makeup on.  I was hoping my winter white unshaven legs were not going to be in the shot.  I had them wrapped tightly to help keep me warm.

This room is definitely my favorite of the whole shoot.  In the magazine I'm sure it will be over 2 pages and I can't wait to see that.

The pantry styled to within an inch of its life.

I thought the kitchen came out great too.  Everything in the kitchen is mine except for the rug, runner on the table and this white bowl from Target.

The office got styled more than any other room in the house.  The stylist and I actually went over to Alex's house and grabbed some things for the room.  The mirror on the desk, the old California flag and lots of other things.  I am not too thrilled with the pillows that were picked for the sofa but not a big deal.  Oh, and for the record, the quote up above...living here has let me slow down but not to admire the pieces I love.  lol.

The bathroom above looks just like it always does.

I was not thrilled with those throw pillows picked for my bed.  They also brought in the glass lamp from Target which looks pretty.

So that's the online pictures.  Like I said I can't wait to get my hands on the actual magazine.  Maybe today?!  There is one question I have and that's why they didn't include my living room?  It's probably the prettiest room in my house!  They spent a lot of time styling it but for some reason it is omitted.  I will post pictures that I took of the whole shoot later this week. You'll get to see how they styled the living room which is interesting.

So what do you think?  So much work goes into this sort of thing.  I have a new appreciation for all that is involved. I'd also like to thank Catherine for pushing my house through Country Living, you are such a sweetheart, thanks for hanging in ther and making it happen.  x

  1. I loved the photos, but actually considered whether my copy was missing pages when I didn't see the living room. I agree that it's the most beautiful in a house of beautiful rooms. While the office looks great, all of the other rooms go together so beautifully. I would have preferred living room photos to office photos. And I love the blue and white theme that you carry throughout your home, even on your dress!

  2. Just beautiful Janet! My only son moved out a few weeks ago to his first apartment and I have been trying to distract myself with refurnishing a few rooms of my house. I have to tell you I often think of your cottage when I'm trying to decide on what to buy! For the first time ever, I have bought a couple of pieces from consignment shops and they have been real treasures. You were my inspiration - thanks for sharing!

  3. Beautiful pictures Janet but how could it not be? I love your home! I'm disappointed they didn't take a picture of your laundry area. It's so pretty! I love all of the rooms but your pantry and kitchen are my favorite!

  4. a couple of days ago I noticed that the April issue of country Living was already out and naturally picked up my copy. your home looks beautiful, but what else would I have expected. I also wondered why your living room was not included, as it is lovely I have already used your home for inspiration. I too had a hodge podge of unrelated artwork, nice oils, childrens art, photos and such. I did what you did and made a gallery wall in my bedroom where I can enjoy it all.I don't think the shelter magazines will feature it but I like the effect. and I did steal your bedding. coveted blue toile for years but the ones I found were so expensive. when you showed the Ikea a year or so ago I ordered and am very pleased.

  6. Janet,
I got my issue in the mail this weekend. It all looks lovely! And I ,too, was wondering why they didn't include your living room.

I do love those pillows they included on your bed and thought the pantry looked rather stuffed with stuff! Looking forward to seeing your photos of the shoot.

  14. I received my copy in Saturday's mail, and as soon as I saw the caption on the front cover ("Small-Space Secrets of a Charming Cottage") I thought "This must be it!"

It's a beautiful 8 full page spread in gorgeous color, so I suspect the living room may not have made the cut purely for space reasons, and because the editorial emphasis was on your clever and creative use of the smaller spaces.

I was just pleased to see it still looked like you -- they clearly didn't think they could possibly improve on that!

  16. It looks amazing and so do you and Larry. You're wearing the dress! It's perfect. How exciting- and yes odd that they left out your living room- but they included your pantry which is the pantry of my dreams. Can't wait to get my paws on the issue. XO

  17. So excited to see this! I am eagerly waiting to purchase my copy. Janet- you have been such an inspiration to me. I am a divorced single mom on a budget and downsized considerably a few years ago. You taught me that style and elegance cost nothing when you decorate with things you love and arrange in a peaceful calming way. Thank you so much! Cannot wait to see your personal photos of the whole shoot (your living room is my absolute favorite!).

It will be fun to read your take on the behind the scenes later this week. Congratulations on the article!

  28. This is so cool! I've been reading Country Living since it first came out in the 70's, so if my house ever got featured (which it wouldn't), I would feel like I was in a dream. One thing is confusing me...the text below the pic of you and Larry says you discovered the house 25 years ago. Then it says "a quarter-century later" (which puts us right back to NOW), you made an offer. I'm probably reading it wrong...anyway, I am wondering if you will clarify how long you have owned your cottage?

  30. I was able to buy in-store last weekend and, yes, your home does look beautiful! I too was shocked that a photo of your living room was not included. Weird. Being a long-time reader of your blog and admirer of your home, I must tell you that as lovely as the spread was I absolutely prefer the less cluttered and Janet-styled version that we are used to seeing. Congratulations on the spread!

Congratulations! What a way to recap all the hard work, money and love you and Larry have put into your home. I adore the photo of you two; it doesn't look staged. It's perfect. The whole thing, all of it, is very REAL. Made me happy; always makes me want to live in a house just like it! How nice of Stephen to clue you in as soon as he saw the reveal.

    1. Janet, we had to go out tonight unexpectedly to the grocery store (Von's) and, in the absence of my subscription-in-progress, I bought the LAST 'Spring Color' (April 2016) issue of Country Living (CVS was all out). The magazine is very 'thin' as so many of the mags have gotten since the advent of online copy but, among many nice things to read, your spread sure seems like the centerpiece and the photos are so clear. They've showcased the cottage just beautifully. Your porch looks inviting and the wood floors inside the house just gleam. I'm reminded again how much I like your bamboo shades in the windows. It seems like you have more items on the counters adjacent to the kitchen stove than I'm remembering! It appears that there's good natural light in all the photos. The article and pictures really make an enticing case for downsizing with your signature style. I will peruse cover to cover when I have more time tomorrow! SO enjoyable. You had nothing to be nervous about; it all turned out just terrific! (But, yeah, no living room! It must have just been a length/editing kind of thing because your living room is exceptionally lovely. They just couldn't fit it all in, no doubt.)

  38. Janet, I have the magazine, it's a wonderful feature, and did not realize you had your eye on this cottage and happened upon it to then see later it was for sale on the real estate market. To think if you were not the buyer the one I'm line to purchase had plans of tearing it down, we, I am so happy it was you who purchased the home, selfish reasons as to being deprived of the beauty you created here. I noticed all the staging C/L did in your home, namely all the bedding, the added colour on your porch, and the fluff here and there.
I love that you are using a wicker deck for your dinning table, this really inspired me.

This feature of your black bean soup cottage so belonged on the front cover... Your black home soulfully inspires so we dare paint a home of our own black? I know I sure would if I had the right look and elevation style to my home.

Can't wait for you to see this issue.
I purchased the Xountry Living magazine at Walmart....it was not on the stand with all the magazines, it was on the stand in the paint department ...

    See you soon dear.
Oh the magazine is wrapped in plastic with Tomatoe seeds packet included.

    1. Yes, I loved that it was wrapped in plastic as it kept it from being dog-eared by people thumbing thru the mags who don't buy them (but also just general handling; it's paper after all). Tomato seeds were a fun Spring plus. I found the issue in the regular magazine case at the front of the store NEAR the checkstands but not AT the checkstands. I'd bet Rite Aid might have the mags. Also probably Barnes and Noble. I've looked for Country Living in other times and I rarely can find them; they must go like hotcakes as soon as they hit the stores. Like another reader here wrote, I'm surprised that the magazine didn't send you a complimentary copy, Janet! It doesn't seem right that some of us now have the magazine...and you don't (yet)!

  60. I LOVE your home and style and think it looks wonderful in the magazine, but I agree, the pillows they put on the bed weren't the best. They just didn't look like your classic style. I also thought the porch looked a little crowded compared to how I remember pictures of it looking. Still charming though. I really loved the picture of your dining room where they were able to capture the whole width in one shot.

  65. How exciting! It all looks so beautiful, but I wonder....will you keep any of the rooms the way they styled them? (do they even let you keep these new items?) Or will you go back to how you had it all before. This was interesting to see the process because I've never known how it works. When I look through magazines I suppose I thought all of the stuff in homes really belonged to the owner, but boy does a bunch of styling take place! I'm sure it was a fun learning experience for you. I'm so happy for you. Your home deserves to be published!

    1. hi emily. so sorry to respond late to this.

it would be hard to keep the rooms just as they styled because they just aren't functional. take the office, that's larry's working office so all that stuff in there could never exist with him. where would he put his computers? lol

the bar in the living room is actually right in front of the entry door. so how would we get in? lol

the nightstand set up in my bedroom is pretty but totally not functional, i need my dresser in there for storage.

the rugs in the kitchen don't really work either, it's just too much of a hassle to clean around them.

but i did take storage tips for the pantry, namely just using more baskets to hide and corral some things.

i did leave the landscape above the stove b/c i was planning to put it there anyway. it was not expensive and will be safe there.

thanks for your compliments. your home is stunning and should be in elle decor!

  66. The photos for the magazine look beautiful. I love the way you styled the pillows on the sofa. Also I love your portrait and the curved drape of her neckline over the curved apron of French table. It's in the details! Too bad the magazine didn't include your styling of the living room!

  67. I wish they would have left ALL of it just as you have it. Your decorating is timeless and classic. I guess they have to justify the stylist's position and presence.
P.S. Someone on their staff has to get a grip on the use of blue (even a pillow on chaise lounge in the garden?), and there was absolutely no need to introduce lime green.
P.S. I would have taken the outdoor pictures while overcast-sunshine washes out colors.
