things

A lot of old stuff

This is what I wore this morning to do a little estate sale shopping.  I have 2 things on my list and I'm hoping to find them soon.  It's a gift for a child and if it works out I'll share it with you.

After the wedding I tore apart the sofa and chairs and washed all the slipcovers.  My motto is to never deep clean before a party.  Wait til it's over and then have at it.

We put these blankets down at night when we settle in to read.  Saves from having to do the above only once a year.

Channeling M with my chair placement.

Omg, the sweetness.

We went to Farm Sanctuary this weekend and what a treat it was.  They care for abused farm animals and their commitment to saving animals from a cruel and torturous death is so inspiring. Please click on the link and if you feel inspired to donate a little something towards these gentle animals and the people who care for them. :)

This rose fell out of B's bouquet and I found it in the garden 4 days after the wedding.  When I took this photo a day ago it was almost 3 weeks old.  Trader Joe's flowers may be inexpensive but they are not cheap.

The End.

    1. yes, we bought these last year at jc penney. i included the link into the post bc you and brenlee are interested. they are made by royal velvet and the last ones we had lasted at least 10 years. the current ones on offer are a little different pattern but other than that they are exactly the same and on sale for $28.

  4. Looking very stylish in those jeans and smart jacket. I saw 'Middlemarch' on the coffee table...you just missed Dani's book club a couple week ago...but you did have your hands full that day!

    2. We'll be looking at it in March so you have the winter to read it Janet! I'm still reading it, it's taking me forever but it's a great book.
Wow about the rose! Your house is so cozy and clean and peaceful looking.
      The outfit is perfection!

  6. My fav pic of all you've shown us! I keep laughing about your "biker" wedding guests - they all looked like models. Boy have bikers changed from my time!

    1. i agree they have changed. my dad hung with a lot of bikers and none of them looked like these guys! too funny. and they were super sweet to top it off. :)

  7. The found rose looks pristine...you may want to press it in a book when it has wilted as a keepsake.
Your outfit looks very much like I would expect a monied woman from an English country manor house might wear for a day of estate sales...very classic. If you email me what you are looking for I might be able to help you on your search.

  8. I love your house. It's so fresh. And I totally agree with LPC-a good omen for sure. Did you benefit from all that rain this week? Our news here just refers to California like it's a small town, so I'm not sure of the geography of the rain. Hopefully you got lots without any mudslides! How wonderful to go to the animal sanctuary. Did you take your granddaughter?

    1. PS-I am liking your hair longer. I have an idea of a cut that would be great for you when it's just a touch longer.

    2. yes we did benefit from that glorious rain. yes i did, she's the kiddo on the right in the photo with the steer. i had to grow my hair longer just for yoga so i can put it up. i like it better too and i'm dying to know what you'd do for it. be careful cause i may walk into your salon one day!

    3. It's really pretty close to what you have now, just changing the layering from interior (falls like a bob INto the neck) to exterior (falls out, activated ends). I think with how much you like structured clothing with strong lines, softening the lines of your hair would be very harmonious. And I know how hard the bob layering is to work with when it's longer. It has to be pushed more than styled. This photo has long face framing (that could be pulled up with the length in a pony), but the cut would still be great with bangs https://www.pinterest.com/pin/175007135495423177/

    4. stephen i used to wear my hair like that. i have a pic somewhere. i can actually get it go do something like that now with just flipping the ends up instead of under but i don't have the layers you talk about. thanks for the advice, i love it!

  10. The cottage is looking autumn cozy with the browns, throws, books, and the warm glow of the candle. Just need that hot cup of tea and you'll be all snuggled in. :) The wicker chair looks charming with the natural elements (pheasant feathers and antlers) on the console. Love the outfit as well! Adorable photos of the children and the critters. As always, thank you for sharing. xx

  11. I love this post, Janet. It captures the beautiful and gentle soul that you are, from appreciating the animal sanctuary to enjoying the forgotten stem of rose :)

  12. I love your wicker chair!!! Was it reasonable? I'm not sure if you know or care, but your chair is a Lloyd Loom: Cira 1920-1930. I have one just like it:)

    1. i did not know this was a lloyd loom. there are not markings or stamp underneath. i love it though and i paid $12 for it. thanks for letting me know. x

    2. You got a fantastic price on the chair!!!: About 7 yrs ago, I purchased my chair from an antique store for around $60.00; the Lloyd Loom manufacture tag is attached underneath the chair. I have a Lloyd Loom book so that is why I am able to date the item.

    3. maybe mine isn't a LL? i still love it though. thanks for enlightening me. x

  13. Agree completely on deep cleaning afterwards. Preferably a minimum of 2 days afterwards due to party-after feelings!

  14. I'd have to live with blankets over white slipcovers all the time due to my pets. Well, what am I saying, I do that anyway no matter what kind of fabric is underneath, so... It looks like a lot of work to keep them clean but the result is so worth it. I love white slipcovers. I do recall you saying you raised your boys on them.

With my recent face-to-face with the runaway-from-slaughter steer on the urban asphalt...wishing he could have had a life with blue sky and a green pasture (you know, those images in our heads that are pastoral and gentle)...I was very interested in your link to the farm sanctuary. There's a lot of good info on their site; I spent time on it. I like that you were actually there and could see it for yourself. Chickens, turkeys, rabbits, goats, cows, pigs, ducks, sheep; you are right, Janet. They deserve better. I love fashion, and the fashion industry is 'way too much into feathers-down, wool and leather even though there are non-animal alternatives (I wish I could afford some Stella McCartney!). So much of this stuff in the past...just a disconnect, of thinking what it meant to have my nice leather handbag with no thought of its origins; you know, leather was a mark of quality, and that's just one example. Think in decades past of the luxury of a fur coat; was anybody thinking of the mink in the mink coat in the 1920s or '30s? Not. Milk and cookies for Santa? He's getting almond milk from me this year.

Something I was thinking of...maybe good for January and fresh starts after the holidays...is if you could share with us your week or more of menus or meal ideas just to get off to a good vegan start in 2015. Your recipes are simple and delicious; simply-delicious. Thanks. It's when budgeting for the new year will be on the mind as well...

    1. i thought of your story when we were listening to these steers stories. it is so sad. thankfully these few found a haven to spend the rest of their lives at. they really are gentle giants and so sweet.

the thing about my menus or recipes is that just like everyone else, i eat the same things over and over. and in fact, i find myself getting lazier and lazier about it. i just want something so simple, nutritious and fast to eat. i haven't been adventurous in the kitchen at all. maybe now that cool weather is here i will...not sure tho.

    2. You don't have to be adventurous. I like simple, nutritious and fast. It doesn't have to be glam. I'm awful in the kitchen. I need all the help I can get at cooking. Just a thought. A refresher. It's not boring; it's helpful. Now I feel like I'm pressuring you. It's okay; I can go back thru your archives to see if I missed anything.

    3. ok, i'll see what i can come up with. warning: it's boring! lol

  15. Janet, You look so chic to go estate sale shopping...usually I'm in yoga pants or my walking attire and no makeup. Actually I'm heading to one down the road this morning before we walk the dog. Hope you find what you are looking for soon! I'm mostly looking for items to sell on Ebay. The more experience I have, the more I can see that selling vintage is the way to go.

Love the Farm Sanctuary! Our next door neighbor raises pheasants. (to eat) Sometimes I wish I could sneak over and let them out of their coop. :/

    Have a good weekend!

  19. So special to find the rose!! I cover our white Slipcovers with throws too. It saves on the wear and tear, and does cut down on laundering. I love your theory of when to deep clean. You're looking fabulous, as always. Love the jacket and shoes! xo
