beautiful kauai

I have been back from Kauai for a few days now and have had a hard time getting into the swing of things.  I think that's a sign of a good vacation. Thanks to dear M who laid out the red carpet for me. She spoiled me rotten. She shuttled me around, fed me and kept me in stitches the whole time. It was so fun seeing what her life is like living on Kauai  vs being a tourist at a resort.

My beautiful hostess

Saying Kauai is beautiful really isn't sufficient. Its beauty is other-worldly and the colors are so vivid that it almost hurts. That top photo taken of the Nepali Coast is a perfect example. I took this with a crap camera and still...look at the colors.

I am now obsessively madly in love with the color pink.  This is the prettiest shade of pink I've ever laid my eyes on. The petals are soft and furry just like lambs ear. Here is its official name...

While hiking through the McBryde Botanical Gardens we stumbled upon these antique tiles that made up a short wall.

Long sleeves and long pants were the recommended garb for the botanical garden because of mosquitoes.

I didn't want to get out of this gorgeous water.

Ho-hum...more staggering beauty.

I wore this vintage maxi because it would have been wrong not to.

Gorgeous view from our table at the Makana Terrace restaurant at the St. Regis.

Super comfy striped maxi dress by Michael Kors.  Perfect for travel because it rolled up and didn't wrinkle plus hid all kinds of bodily sins.  I also like it because it is lightweight yet you can't see through it. Slits on the side make it comfortable for summer weather too.  I got mine at Marshalls but Amazon has it in case you are interested.

Spectacular waterfalls.

Waimea Canyon.

Following are a few snaps of M's house and garden.  She has always told me her house in Hawaii is nothing special because there is no shopping on Kauai.  There is a Walmart, Kmart and recently a Costco.  Few companies ship to Kauai either. There are no junk stores to speak of or antique stores either.  So everything she has here has been brought in suitcases and their original container when they moved here over 10 years ago. I fell in love with it all and knowing how hard it is to get things there made it all the more special.

Her garden

I can't imagine being able to go outside and pick a papaya for my morning smoothie.
So that's it.  I am so incredibly grateful to have visited and been so well taken care of.
Thank you M. x

    1. yes camille. if you don't have reservations yet i would look into the waimea cottage plantations. if i ever make it back there with larry that is where i'd stay. it's not resort-y but incredibly beautiful.

  2. Thank you for sharing the beautiful photos, Janet. Steve and I got married in Honolulu and had our family-moon (a honeymoon with our parents and siblings - it was a destination wedding) in Maui, so Hawaii has a special spot in my heart. I've never been to Kauai but I heard it's even more beautiful than Maui. I will have to write down all the places you shared for our future trip to Kauai :)

  4. Oh, I wanted to talk with you before you left...Kauai, I believe, is the most beautiful place on earth. Years ago, I had a job that sent me there every couple of months. Didn't it literally leave you speechless...honestly, there's really no good words to describe the beauty there. I remember standing at the water, especially at sunset, and being so thankful that I got to see such a beautiful place. and to be there with a good friend, I'm sure, made it even more special.

  5. Wow, that was REALLY enjoyable. I haven't been on any kind of vacation or weekend getaway for YEARS so it's a treat (I say that with a wee bit of green envy) to see such gorgeous photos. The color really is saturated, isn't it; hits you square between the eyes. I wonder if that could be a tiny bit of me becoming too accustomed to a browner, dry, dust-covered, dead, muted, DROUGHT-STRICKEN Southern California landscape? We're about to tear out our front yard in the ongoing remodeling and I'm sorely tempted to go xeriscape with a tropical bent. I love the hibiscus backdrop to your beautiful floral maxi. What can I say, Janet, you've got friends in the right places! I don't think I've ever thought of how a papaya grows either, so thanks for the education and really glad you had a nice time (how could you not). Really appreciate that you shared some of the trip with us. I could have listened to those ocean waves on Instagram 100 times. Happy 4th of July to you! (Hey, update: My two PODs in the driveway are emptied and leaving on Saturday. Hooray! Car is loaded with donated goods for Salvation Army tomorrow. Backyard has been totally demo'd with new fencing; retaining wall goes up next week. Four truckloads...BIG truck...of greenwaste has gone out of here; we cleared the back hill for weed abatement and new plantings. I'm enjoying researching drought-resistant/native plants for low water. Old house is starting to sparkle again. Progress feels good.) Aloha. Did you encounter much rain over there? I can really remember it coming down pretty hard in Maui/Lanai when I was there 25 years ago in a long-ago June...

  12. Hello Janet,

This is a landscape quite beyond any of our experiences. It is beguiling and enchanting, we can well see how it would just steal one's heart immediately. Everywhere there us a lush green which must be so infinitely calming and soothing to look at and simply be in. And, the water looks so magically blue and clear. Yes, this must be close to Paradise.

How perfect that you had M to be your guide. It does make a place so much more special when one has the insider knowledge of a local to point one in the right directions. She obviously made you welcome in her most attractive home and these will be treasured memories which will stay close to your heart for all time. Lovely!

  16. Ahhhhh! I can't believe you wore so much color! I LOVE the vintage dress. Looks fabulous. Everyone needs a friend like M. I'll bet she was the Queen of the late '80s-early '90s English country Laura Ashley days. She does that acquired, layered English look so well. Even in the jungle land of Jurassic Park! Welcome back to the continent. How did your hair do with the humidity? It looks like it behaved remarkably well.

    3. Nowhere exciting I'm afraid. Drinking a g&t, rolling my eyes at people and their DIY fireworks displays (side-eye over a cocktail is an ancient WASP warfare tactic). Hopefully you're not experiencing the same in dry California!

  17. Fabulous pictures! We vacationed on Kauai many times and often wondered how it would be different to live there. I wondered if it would be frustrating to be surrounded by tourists all the time. Love you in that vintage dress!! Such perfect bright colors for Hawaii. Did you get a lot of wear out of that fabulous kaftan you snatched from the Emerson Fry outlet? Your friend M's home looks just perfect! I'm so glad you had a fabulous vacation. Off to check out that MK dress. Happy Weekend Janet! xo

  20. I love "working" in the garden too. It's so nice to see the results of your hard work when everything starts blooming. You can't beat lantana...it's such a good bloomer and can totally take the heat. I used to have a ton of them at my old house and they were the star of the show. :) Your garden looks fantastic! Are those wooden shutters I see? They're gorgeous!

    2. I love Chincoteague. Chincoteague and Assateague islands are two barrier islands off the cost of Maryland and Virginia. Assateague is a wildlife refuge, with miles of beautiful beach. it's still relatively unspoiled and the perfect place for the family to gather each Summer.

I have never been to Kauai, my daughter is so excited to go there for her honeymoon in Sept.

I love both your maxi dresses, especially the vintage one. They are great in the hot weather, I've invested in a couple of them myself.
