what's happening here...neutrals

I have a tendancy to dress like my interiors, I always have.  I guess I'm just drawn to a certain look and I have friends that are too.  I love her style and her's too.  Their colorful lives are so beautiful. But I get weak at the sight of vanilla.  I know I've flirted with color in the past but my heart belongs to beige.  I realize just how boring that sounds but really it's not that bad!

Everlane sweater right here
Love it by the way.

Neutrals allow quick change ups.  I must like that because I do it a lot.  All summer the house was in blue and white and now I've brought back the browns.  For Christmas I'm sure to bring in the reds again.  So that's what's going on around here.  Have a great weekend!

  2. Looking great as always! I tend to wear a lot of neutrals too, although my house is anything but!

I bought a jute rug for my bedroom a couple years ago from Overstock. Can't beat their prices!

  3. I LOVE neutrals! Neutrals are wise for interiors and fashion and give a sense of calm and help coordinate things easily. Adding seasonal color to them is fun and inspirational, and great for a quick change.

  4. Did you splurge on this sweater because you'll wear it a lot and its cashmere and you want a really good sweater and not 10 cheap sweaters? $120 is a lot of money but I wanted to know what your "justification" was. I know there was one. :) Love to know! Was my guess right? LOVE YOUR NEUTRAL décor. So pretty and cozy. Thanks for posting! Jennifer

    1. yes you are right jennifer. i justified the purchase with my ebay profits. :) i admire the ethos of Everlane and want to support local businesses like them. And it really fits into my idea of a small but quality wardrobe. thanks!

  5. Your new sweater is a classic...I can even see it layered over a plan white tee or a shirt.
I never tire of your gorgeous interior decor...it's hard to describe but I feel very calm when I see pictures of your home.
You are a lovely and gracious woman.

  7. Your home looks very soothing and calm. I, too, love neutrals which you can easily enliven with a splash of color for the season. My adult sons think my home with it's white/beige/pale walls is boring, but for me it's the perfect backdrop and I never tire of it. Thanks for the inspiration you lend.

  9. Hmm, yes I too am guilty of dressing to match my house.....inside & outside. Was reminiscing that this time last year I coerced K to take my photo wearing a rose print skirt while standing in a flower bed! This year it's just been too grey & rainy a springtime....kind of like London! Your hair looks fab! Rx

  12. I couldn't agree more Janet...I love white. It's not boring at all. You look fantastic and so does your home :)

    Happy weekend!

  13. I just adore you, and your home, and your wardrobe, and garden, and the blog. You put to words what I cannot. While I am no fan of white, I too am pretty simple: substitute blue and grey for the beige and it's quite similar. Also love Everalne. I don't need more clothes, but I do have a sweater, some silk blouses, some tees, and a belt of theirs, and can vouch for quality and good business practices, some wish I could support them more...instead of my buying stuff, hopefully other readers will!

  14. I'm disappointed that Everlane outsources much of their apparel manufacturing to China.

    1. anon i'm okay with their outsourcing. they are quite transparent.

    2. @ anon: The really sad thing is you can't trust "Made in Italy" anymore, even when the textiles are actually made in Italy, see for Prato in Tuscany:
      http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-21350013

      Janet,

I just visited the Everlane website, my impression differs from yours, I can't see the transparency. To me the factory-page reads a lot like greenwashing. The building is elegant? I don't really care how elegant a factory is.
How many hours per week do they have to work?
      What is the salery?
Where do they live? Can they afford to rent apartments or do they sleep in large dormitories just as the other factory workers from Dongguan?
How about sick leave and vacation days?
A few numbers and hard facts would deliver true transparency. The information they provide is quite vague.
Everlane tells us they met happy workers in a clean factory. The story we consumers want to read. In my eyes the faces and the body language in the photos tell another story. And photos can tell us all kinds of stories.

Bravo to Mr Chu, for treating his workers with respect. Because the factories in Dongguan has a really bad reputation. This is a low prices for high quality 100% cashmere sweaters.
      Who pays the price?

I am no nitpicker, but when it comes to cheap cashmere sweaters in grade A quality (according to Everlane), made in Dongguan, some nicely shot photos or a feel good-video just does not give me the certainty I am looking for.

      kind regards,
      Paula

  15. Hey Gorgeous, you and your house looking good, as ever.

If my house and I looked alike it would be full of denim, or covered in workout gear.

Or i would be considered "vintage". Wait, I am vintage....

  16. You look wonderful in neutrals, and so does your home! I, too, prefer neutrals and am drawn to them in our home and my closet. I love your new rug. It is a great addition to your living room.

  21. The neutral shades are so peaceful, both on people and in rooms:).

  22. Janet,
I tried for several years to wear monochromatic outfits of off-white, navy or charcoal. I think neutrals are the most sophisticated way to dress. But, no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't make it work. I am very pale and need color next to my face. I still use those neutrals for my wardrobe base, but include either a clear toned, bright colored top or scarf to keep me from looking like I am ready for embalming.

I also think that our homes end up looking like us. After trying colored walls, I finally realized that I require white walls…..and I mean white, not off-white. Against this, I have numerous pieces of art, all in bright colors. Yes…my house and I match. Hey, I was brought up in the era where one's shoes and handbag should match. Thankfully, those days are over! Even if I now match my house!!!!!!

  26. I also have a home painted in neutrals. It's very restful and easy on the eye. It also means paintings or fabrics can be swapped around easily. I love the vibrancy of friends homes, but I'm happier in quieter surroundings. Just like yours.

  27. Love neutrals. My house and my wardrobe are the same. It's peaceful to have the ability to add seasonal color when desired ( or not!). Love your blog, your simplistic lifestyle (I'm such a minimalist and you've encouraged me even more), and especially your vegan recipes. Keep on blogging....you are very much appreciated!

  30. I adore your house! It's warm and charming and thoughtfully put together. Most of all, it's completely a reflection of you and the way you live your life. Whatever your preference in terms of color, houses are most beautiful when they reflect the spirit of their owner.

  31. hi janet,
you look great and so does your house. I'm always so surprised at how good vanilla is when i try it. I guess I'm a split personality. I love the neutrals, but I love color too! My house and wardrobe are heavy on the black, white, gray, and beige. But then I love to throw in a hot pink or bright green accessory.

  32. Hi Janet! I just found a blog called MaiTai's Picturebook, and I thought of you. She lives in Paris and has that classic style of neutrals you adore. I really love the scarves she incorporates in each outfit. I believe she must work for Hermes and is gorgeous

    ReplyDelete
  33. Mai Tai lives in Southern France but zips into Paris frequently. She claims no connection w/Hermes but I have lost count of her stash of H. scarves, jewelry and Birkin bags. She does sell her line of scarf rings (which WE can make out of old belt buckles!), fur collars and jewelry. Her directions/videos of scarf-tying techniques are fabulous. She is married to a titled Englishman and is "Lady...." Yes, she is rich and gorgeous and appears to be very, very nice - so let's be kind and appreciative. - Jan

    2. So much for Maitai recommending using magnets to secure scarves in her last post. I used magnets today and set off security alarms in my local hypermarket, it was highly embarrassing .

Going to keep to Elle's suggestions from now on - no magnets involved LOL!

  35. Thanks Jan for the 411 on Mai tai! I just stumbled upon her blog and I haven't had time to get to know her. I thought you, Janet, had perhaps already found her blog because of your style. I tend to gravitate to blogs that compliment my sensibilities, even though I will never have or want a Birkin bag, I can appreciate the classy ladies who enjoy them!

  36. So much to love here... your hair with the added length, the sweater (especially the color), your larger rug, and what I am impressed with the most, is your Vegan handbag. You are an inspiration!
