some food for thought this thanksgiving
I have blogged through the holidays for the last five years and I just want to step away from the computer and enjoy some time with my family. I suggest maybe you try it too.
But before I go, here are a few things of interest.
I am a Goodwill Industries shopper. I always thought shopping the Goodwill was a responsible thing to do. That is until I saw this report on Nightly News.
Before you buy your free range turkey, read this.
And finally if the stress is getting to you...this.
Have a simple and beautiful holiday!
*edited note. it was brought to my attention that the uggs story was not true so i deleted it.
thanks little edie for bringing it to my attention!

Enjoy your break. Happy Thanksgiving, Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year, in case it is a long one.
ReplyDeleteOff to read the Ugg stuff as I love mine.
ReplyDeleteJust remember, me June, 50th birthday, LA be there!
Well I didn't know that but I eat lamb, so...
Deletei will be there for sure!!!
DeleteEnjoy your break Janet!
ReplyDeleteHappy Thanksgiving to you and yours! We canucks will hold down the blogging fort!
ReplyDeleteFood for thought indeed! Thanks for all of this info, Janet. My family insists on Turkey dinner for Christmas, so I'm screwed there. I wouldn't call myself a vegetarian however, I have cut wayyyyyy back on meat and haven't eaten pork or beef in almost a year. I've never worn or bought Uggs, so feeling better about that one. How horrifying. The waves helped me recover.
ReplyDeleteOkay, so enjoy your much deserved break. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours, Janet.
Have a wonderful holiday break! If you need a break from the holiday break you know where to find me. :)
ReplyDeletePosting anonymously because I expect this will raise the ire of many but please think about my comment.
ReplyDeleteWhy aren't all animal rights activists pro-life? If ever there were a defenseless creature that needed protection, this is it.
Thanks for raising the question. I've always wondered the same exact thing and you are correct!!!!
DeleteHave a great break...off to click your links.
ReplyDeleteThat "loophole" needs to be closed. I will not be donating to Goodwill again!
ReplyDeleteJanet, Enjoy your break: Shame, shame to Goodwill. I don't know if you have noticed but for the past 2-3 years, Goodwill has raised their prices!!!
ReplyDeleteWishing you to best Thanksgiving holiday too!
ReplyDeleteGoodwill "was" one of my 1st shopping stops and I have given so much to them over the years. what they are doing has pissed me off! I will find another charity to give my things to. The UGGS is awful and a disgrace! I have gone Vegan so no Turkey. I did recently rescue an old 1980s sofa that is not Vegan friendly but I also believe in recycling. I failed the relax for 2 minutes test several times.
Enjoy your break, sweetie pie. I'll miss you!

ReplyDeleteHope you have a wonderful holiday season enjoying your family Janet! xo
Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family Janet.
ReplyDeleteHappy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas! See you in 2014. I am sure there will be lots to talk about!
ReplyDeleteDo you read Wendell Berry? Been writing essays since the 60's on your topics.
ReplyDeleteHow 'we' live is industrial, creation of products to sell at inflated prices to people who don't need them. Agrarian lifestyles are sustainable, organic, benefiting people & beast.
Big ag vs. family farms. He's done the metrics & gives the math.....

Enjoy your break!!!! Well to be "fair" I've worked with many disabled people that are employees of Goodwill. I know for a fact they are treated well in this area. This report isn't really fair to all the people that work with disabled people everyday. Of course there are always bad situations the media enjoys exploiting. The people I know have a new lease on life do to their jobs. They have a reason to feel proud and get out of the bed on the morning. I find this report misleading. Now if you
ReplyDeletewant to talk about charging too much for items that I agree with!! Honestly in my line of work I still totally believe there is more goodness in our country than bad. I see it all the time. Cheers!!!
Enjoy your time off. Hope you get more than 2 minutes to do nothing!
ReplyDeleteEnjoy you're break. I think I will also. Thanks for the enlightenment about Goodwill. It is shameful. I'll posting it to Facebook.
ReplyDeleteHave a beautiful holiday.

Oh my. I am also a Goodwill shopper and had no idea about this news. I was astounded that a regional CEO of Goodwill makes $1.1 million. There is definitely something wrong with that picture. And to do that at the same time as paying someone else $0.58. ??? Are you kidding me? And the sheep video brought me to tears. I am also feeling very thankful that I've never purchased or worn a pair of UGGS. Very depressing news on all fronts but I'm thankful to know.....thank you for sharing! Enjoy your break!
ReplyDeleteThank you for all the information. Very, very sad. So glad now, I could never afford UGGS or any impostors. Thankfully I've never had a taste for honey. That loophole (Goodwill's) needs to be closed stat. Knew about the turkeys. Hope you have a lovely and peaceful holiday season. Oh, and that last item, the 2 minutes? Cracked me up...bumped my mouse and "FAIL" popped up!
ReplyDeleteRe. UGGs - are you trying to tell me people ever thought sheepskin was somehow not real?!! Really??! Surely it is obvious that UGGs are an animal product? So what do folk think ponyskin is, then? Honestly, I wonder at the intelligence of the average person when reading this.
ReplyDeleteI hope people who follow the link to this amateurish and uninformed article also read the comments, where real people offer real and informed opinions from planet Earth and not planet Lalaland.
I will continue to eat ethically produced meat and to buy leather products of same, as humanity has done since we've been around. This faddy American silliness is beginning to irritate me.
Sorry, no offense, Janet!
Happy Thanksgiving Janet! Best wishes, Pamela xx
ReplyDeleteI'm still in shock that anyone was daft enough not to know that sheepskin wasn't skin. I loathe Uggs anyway.
ReplyDeleteHave a fab holiday. xxx
Thank you for continuing to bring Awareness to the collective Conscious, Janet. Best wishes to you and yours, Louise
ReplyDeleteThanks for the information sort of. I am horrified that Good will pays so much to the corporate folks and so little to their workers...of course at this point I think that they are just a reflection of what is going on in the society at large.
ReplyDeleteThat said I am going to focus on the presence of people like yourself, and others, to help us all live more conscious, responsible lives.Thank you.
Have a lovely holiday.
A well deserved break. Not sure what it said originally, but the Uggs link now has the following posted : 'Editor's note: It has been brought to our attention that the article that was originally located here was inaccurate and misleading. We looked into the information in conjunction with our content partner Business2Community and found that this was in fact the case and have removed the article.
ReplyDeletethanks little edie. i will remove the link.

Hope you are enjoying Thanksgiving with your family - working for a US company we had the afternoon off so to say yesterday, but our team here in Europe also enjoyed a Thanksgiving dinner and as we have a number of vegetarians and vegans in our larger group we had some very nice choices on the menu - I enjoyed a beautiful herb broth with wild mushrooms - Pasta with seasonal grilled vegetables and a boozy fruit salad - looking forward to see your Thanksgiving dinner menu

sounds lovely mireille. my menu was quite small. pumpkin soup, salad, bread and wine. :)
DeleteHope you had a good Thanksgiving! I'm a vegetarian, trending to vegan, but need to share about the free-range turkeys. For those who do eat turkey, look for local farmers who raise their turkey's ethically.
