recently alex and i went to check out a new junk store in a neighboring town.
while i explored inside, he wandered out back and starting going through box after box of junk.
he found a few goodies and told me he saw an old dress that i might want to check out.
so i went out back and found this silky-soft dress from the 1960's.
it was a little dusty and dirty but in otherwise perfect shape.
is it just me or does it look like a kate spade pattern?
i mean even the navy, white and yellow color scheme is perfect.
vintage junk store dress - $1
try and stay cool this weekend.

Gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteYou should have your own TV show! Style On $1 A Day...
ReplyDeleteThis is very Kate Spade. The neckline is gorgeous. I can't wear dropped-waist dresses (my waist seems to have already dropped?), but it looks like it was made for you.

ReplyDeleteTo me this dress says "lunch date". I wonder if Kate Spade's designers go through junk shops for inspiration? Betcha!

It's a gem Janet. Well "spotted" by your son! Pam in Johannesburg
ReplyDeleteAwesome thrifting and very stylish, even better than Kate Spade because you have a one of a kind. I have the J Crew Pop Art Polka Dot Cafe Capri Pants with retro big white dot design that must have been inspired by the same 60 style of your dress. A few years ago J Crew had a Warehouse sale and they were selling what they called their "inspiration" clothing. Basically, it looked like thrift store finds and old LL Bean stuff thrown in. I thought that it was very interesting and fun to see what they were looking to for ideas. Maybe we'll see your fabulous, mod dress in stores next spring!
ReplyDeleteYou are inspiring me to start thrifting again this fall!
Have a good week end.
It looks fabulous on you, I love it.

Adorable dress Janet!
ReplyDeleteThis is my first ever blog comment, and it is to tell you how much I appreciate your approach to blogging/life. I have kept up with your blog for about a year and a half now. I love it for your great sense of humor, beautiful photos and our similar interests. I am a vegetarian turned vegan 1 year ago, love simplicity, decluttering, green living, yoga, Redlands, style and enjoying life. Like you!
But a few weeks ago I found myself crying in the garage while breaking down some cardboard for recycling. I think I had an attack of green/zen/simplicity/waste free exhaustion! I decided that wasn't normal, and that all these blogs I read on those subjects are (for me at least) so far along the accomplishment spectrum that rather than lifting me up they were helping me to feel like a failure. Like I could never quite keep up. I am sure this is just my personality reacting, but I decided to finally delete them all from my top site board and go back to the old days. . . pre blog when I (gasp) trusted myself to know how do something. I had begun to consult a blog on everything, and they were so beautiful and inspiring. . . sort of. But they were also paralyzing because none of them were living my exact life and I had begun to compare myself to them rather than just seek information and inspiration.
So I deleted them all for now. EXCEPT for yours. Because your blog has never once made me feel like I come up short. I always leave your blog feeling uplifted and inspired. I get a literal and figurative glimpse of sunshine in my misty Seattle days. And a peek at "home" (my husband grew up just down the road and we both graduated from LLU).
So rock on Janet! Suzanne and I and the rest of us really appreciate you!

P.S.
I have been keeping Suzanne in my thoughts and prayers but wasn't sure what to add to her list. I agreed with everyone else. I think now I would say a favorite childhood book. These can take you back to a simpler time. For me it would be The Chronicles of Narnia, A Wrinkle in Time, Anne of Green Gables, The Hobbit, Sherlock, The Black Stallion, maybe even a little Nancy Drew :).
Great dress, and a great score; it would look perfect with stockings and low-heeled pumps.

Just found your blog and love it. The $1 dress is fantastic. I love it and would definitely wear it. Congrats on a great find.
ReplyDeletetre chic darling and the bargain makes you super cool! Im thinking maybe a belt too!
ReplyDeleteKate Spade, Tibi, Milly, and on and on. Yes. Nifty as heck.
ReplyDeleteWhat a score! This is such a perfect summer dress and looks lovely on you. Kudos to Alex for being able to see beyond its dusty state in the junk store!
ReplyDeleteI love black/yellow and navy/yellow combos, it always looks so fresh! I thought I scored when I found 3 pristine Ralph Lauren tops at goodwill this week but you did much better for a buck! You look so classy and fresh! :)
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh...Kate Spade is looking for that dress and you just found it..for a dollar!!!! Just when i think I'm going to give up on the clothing search and stick to household stuff at junk stores...you post this! This might just be my favorite score of yours yet.
ReplyDeleteI don't know which is more astonishing to me and makes me the most jealous: the fact that you scored such a great deal on an adorable dress ... or the fact that you have a hubby who will shop and browse junk stores and has an eye for dresses. You made quite a catch there(!) in both the dress and the guy. :-)
ReplyDeleteIt fits you like it was tailored for you. Stunningly simple yet elegant. Perfect lines.
ReplyDeleteYes, Kate Spade-ish for sure! I want to come shopping with you!!! You find the greatest things!
ReplyDeleteJanet,

ReplyDeleteDitto to all that's already been said:)
ReplyDeleteI agree with everyone -- great find. Just curious -- did you have the dress tailored or shortened? Or did it fit that way from the get-go?
ReplyDeletethis is how it fit. it is a little tight through the bust but really not too bad at all.:)
