The second difference is that it was shot in one day vs five days with Country Living. What a relief. The photographer Bret Gum was v kind and just went to work and got it done. I so appreciated that.
Oh my goodness another favorite.
I never shoot my kitchen from this angle and I quite like it. You really see the age of the table.
And I just love my pantry. This is how it looks, simple and fresh.
Gosh I love my little porch too.
I can't express just how much you all mean to me. I never once thought one day this little house would be shared with thousands of people throughout the world. Thank you guys so much for each and every comment you've ever left here. Some days I just pick an old page and read your comments and am floored by your kindness. I cry reading them. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. xo janet
Janet, you've put out so much beauty and kindness into the world that you deserve all the good thoughts and kindness coming back. Thank you so much for sharing your lovely home, thoughts, and life with us, even during the hard times.

Out of all the homes I have ever seen, you sweet cottage is my my favorite as it just screams elegance and simplicity. I have followed you for many years and can’t thank you enough for teaching me the value of using what I have and loving what I have. You are a delightfully rare internet presence and I so appreciate your lovely blog. Hope you are well!
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, I love these so, so much! And the plants and floral arrangements are beautiful.
ReplyDeleteJanet, you’ve always inspired me with your graciousness and beautiful style. Thanks for sharing. Sending warm thoughts and a big virtual hug.
ReplyDeleteYou have such a lovely cottage! No wonder it keeps getting photographed by magazines. Your living room looks a lot different than it used to. Did you paint the armoire? I like that you put the lady facing into the room. I think a few years ago you had it on the other side of the window, didn't you? I also liked seeing your garden, and I wouldn't mind seeing more... May I offer a suggestion? If you spread shredded bark mulch on the bare soil it will help to retain water to keep the soil a bit moist so you will not have to irrigate as much AND will help to make it hospitable to earthworms (which help to fertilize the plants and aerate the soil). You would want at least 2" deep of shredded bark mulch and you would want to keep it at least two to 3 inches away from the plant stalks/trunks so they don't rot.
ReplyDeleteBest wishes to you! It's nice hearing from you again.

Love your home and your style. So glad I found your blog again. Think of you often and wonder how you are doing, which seems strange since I am all the way in Australia.
ReplyDeleteIt made me so happy to see this post Janet. Seeing your beautiful serene home felt in a way like coming home. I still have the copy of the magazine from 2015, was it really that long ago. I hope you are well and happy. Love, Darby
ReplyDeleteI was so happy to see this today Janet. Seeing your beautiful and serene home, lovely as ever was like coming home. I still have my copy of the 2015 magazine, was it really that long ago? Hoping you are well and happy. Love, Darby
ReplyDeleteI was just cleaning around my Inbox..working on old Emerson Fry things, the last one to come up was your blog. You were wearing an Emerson Fry caftan, it was quite an old post. I hit Gardener's Cottage not really expecting to see any new posts at all and I find your post of today. I hope you are doing well, your cottage is as charming as ever, have a wonderful summer. Jan

ReplyDeleteHi Janet, You popped into my head today and lo and behold, there was a new post! And a lovely one, too; thank you! Is it true? Did you finally paint the cottage white and get the black awning? I think I remember a talented reader that drew or painted the cottage this way for you years ago after you said that was your plan? Also, the yard looks SO good! Anyway, it was a joy to read your post and see your welcoming home again and congratulations on it being featured in another publication. May I please ask about the painting of the gentleman and the floral panel above the chair that are partially visible in the photos? I have not seen them before and am curious as you always find incredible things :o) Perhaps you will write about them? Wishing you a peaceful and joyful summer! Warmest Regards, Rachel in Newport, OR
ReplyDeleteSo nice to see your blog pop up! Your art groupings are beautiful, I love that especially with all of the precious animals... Hope you are doing well, God bless and be with you. ~Amelia

ReplyDeleteDear Janet,
ReplyDeleteYour house becomes more and more beautiful, if that is even possible. I love your house in white, as well. I also love the new porch floor colour; always loved the stripes as well. Everything looks so fresh and clean. XXO, R
Janet, I have been following you since nearly the beginning and (like someone above said) I do believe your home is my absolute favorite. You have shown me what simple elegance can look like and it has been a joy to watch your home evolve over the years. I was disappointed when Country Living restyled your home because I believed it was better the way you styled it. I am so glad this is the approach taken by C&B. I hope you are well.
ReplyDeleteMelodee
simply beautiful
ReplyDeleteHow exciting to click on my bookmark to your blog and see this post. It is all so wonderful, Janet. Delighted to see the evolution and now white with a sweet awning. I can’t decide which space is my favorite - the porch or the pantry. I so love little nooks. Love to you!
ReplyDeleteEverything is so pretty. I will be revisiting these photos many times. All familiar but with small new touches inside and out. Simple, calm and beautiful.
ReplyDeleteHope all is well with you.
Hi Janet. I always enjoy seeing your elegant, beautiful home. I am really enjoying the pops of blue throughout. The photographer did a fabulous job of capturing the lovely moments in your home. It is nice to hear that they didn't bring props so these photos capture your home in its authentic state. Thanks for sharing your home, recipes and other lifestyle tips. Your blog was the first I ever read and still a favorite.
ReplyDeleteQuiet, calming and elegant!
ReplyDeleteThank you for this post, Janet, and all the lovely pictures. It's always good to see a new post from you.
ReplyDeleteDid you paint again or is that the original color?
ReplyDeleteThank you for blogging! I'm trying to get back to mine. I miss the community we had.
ReplyDeleteWhat a treat to get to see these photos! I have to agree with a lot of the commenters above. I love your simple, elegant aesthetic and that you find beauty in the old, the chippy, and the imperfect. Your blog embodies...contentment, and I find myself reading old blog post and the comments too when I need some inspiration. Wishing you the best, Janet!
ReplyDeleteI've followed your blog for years because I love your ability to make the very most of a smaller home. Now approaching retirement, we are looking for a small house that we, too, can transform into a little jewel using many of the techniques you've demonstrated with the Gardener's Cottage. May I please ask the dimensions of your rooms? That is the hardest part for me in envisioning a smaller space--figuring out how to make smaller rooms workable and comfortable. I have a house in mind that is very small, but perhaps not much smaller than the Gardener's Cottage (although the layout is different and your kitchen and LR/DR seem quite large). I'm starting to envision the possibilities--including a labyrinth in the backyard--and will learn well from what you've created in your small space. Thanks for the inspiration!
ReplyDeleteStunning! Janet, you never disappoint. So much better to see your beautiful home as YOU style it. Yours is truly my favorite blog with the most lovely pictures anywhere on the internet. Your home is so calming---I will return to view these photos again and again.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing!
Lovely, elegant, serene. Thank you for sharing your charming home.
ReplyDeleteI love your home and often go back and look at your old blog posts. Your home is simple but oh so beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI'm so happy you posted! Your home is peaceful and beautiful. I think of you often and hope you're well. Such a talented lady with so much beauty to share. Know that there are many people who think highly of you out here, even though we've never met.
ReplyDeleteYour lovely simplicity and positive attitude after the changes you have experienced are inspiring.
ReplyDeleteLovely and peaceful! Thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteLooking back on these photos and being struck by the serenity. Inspirational.
ReplyDeleteI have tears in my eye just reading your comment. xo
ReplyDeleteI love your house so much. It is what I aspire to in the next phase of my life. Beautiful, cozy and homey enough to relax with a good book. Just peaceful. I’m so sorry that the last few years have been so devastating. I wish you the peace and comfort you bring to all of us. xo B
ReplyDeleteI love your cottage and your blog. It has brought me a lot of joy. And serves as a sort of road map to my own retirement home and lifestyle.
ReplyDeleteHappy to see your new posts. I just happened to look at my bookmarks and decided to click on your site. I thought you stopped posting, so I quit looking. To be honest, I love the way your cottage looks when you do all the styling. It is still just as beautiful as ever. The white exterior looks great! Your blog has always been a comfort and inspiration to me. Sincerely, Debra from SENC
ReplyDeleteOh how I've missed you, and I've neve even met you!!!!! Your kind and humane vegan meals. Your elegant fashion. Your epic love story. Your home, where everything has a place and looks meant to be there. Your victories from thrift stores and estate sales. And your general persona and aura. I can't wait to read everything you feel inspired to write going forward!
ReplyDeleteI have missed this blog so much and so glad you are back. I lost my beloved husband two and a half years ago too. Please continue with your photos and stories of your precious home.
ReplyDeleteThrilled your back to blogging … you’ve been missed. These photos are spectacular. Love the approach taken … capture the home as is. Non props needed … what a triumph! xo
ReplyDeleteYour home is lovely. So good it was just your things this time. I think I recall there were some strange pillows they brought last time in the bedroom! We are living in a 1938 tudor style home, 1400 Sq ft. I am preparing for widowhood as my husband is later stage Alzheimers. It's comforting to me to see you managing alone.
ReplyDeleteA stunning property - do you rent it out by chance? Lovely photos and some really nice touches. The tiled floor is exactly like the one we had in our last home, a 250 year old listed building. It was a nightmare to keep clean lol but pretty spectacular. Not sure how I stumbled on this page but the pics are lovely thanks.
