how i make money on this blog

Hello and happy Saturday.  I'm hoping this post is not going to be too long or too rambling.  There's a lot to cover here and I don't want to leave anything out.  So let's start at the beginning.  😮

I started this blog in July of 2009.  So wow, the blog is 10 now! When I started, I never in a million years thought anyone would read it let alone make money on it.  My goal was to share simple living tips and present a life that could be lived beautifully on v little money.  And that's what I awkwardly continue to do.

It was about 4 years ago that people began really monetizing their blogs.  I was interested but I don't have great computer skills and most of the programs that allow you to make money take computer knowledge to just install and learn your way around their sites.  My first ads were through google ads and they are still here.  That's the ad you see in between each post.  I remember the push back when I installed them.  Readers were outraged that they would see an ad for lunch meat on my vegan cooking blog.  I had to explain that the ad they saw was following them, not me.  I will still get emails telling me how unethical it is to have that sort of ad.  I think we all know now exactly how those ads work.  If you look at a dress at Nordstrom, it now appears on your IG or Facebook or wherever.  So I've stuck with google ads because they are not that offensive and I make a small amount each month when you guys click something of interest to you. You don't even have to buy it. I average $30-50 a month from them.  When I've accumulated $100, they deposit it directly into my bank account.

Just last year I met the requirements of Reward Style and they allowed me to begin placing their ads on my blog.  I like this better because I get to choose the ads.  You see them on my sidebar 👉

I absolutely love finding beautiful things online and showing them to you.  I'm not offended by them and I hope you aren't either.  I do research the items, like where it's made or the fabric and the reviews.  If I like it then I'll post it or even sometimes buy it myself. I can make more on Reward Style because the retailer pays me a small commission.  This dress I'm shamelessly promoting is a perfect example.  I bought it at H&M for $19 and I believe the commission is almost $2.  So you can see I'm not getting rich but I would say I average $100 on a good month.  Btw - love love love this dress.  It's cotton/linen blend, hides a world of sins and very well made.  I think the stock is getting way low...!

There is a great deal of pressure from these advertising companies for bloggers to promote their products.  You may have noticed that a lot of blogs are plastered with ads now.  They have ads in-between paragraphs, pop up ads and big banner ads.  Those aren't for me.  I sometimes get confused as to whether I'm reading the blog or the ad!  But I also recognize that this is full time work for many people and they need to make money writing.  And trust me, it isn't exactly a picnic trying to come up with content if you HAVE to.  I don't so my ads and approach to blogging is a bit gentler.  There are bloggers out there making millions each year, they have entire teams working for them.  I know this for a fact because I have a close friend who worked for a young LA fashion blogger.  She's very popular and is making multi-millions now.  So good for her!

So that is how I make money.  I like that I'm an old lady blog and I started blogging about fashion over 50 and now it's over 60 and with any luck I'll get to continue.  Thanks for reading, as always, this blog is nothing without you.  x

  2. I love your style and your blog - I'm delighted that you can earn a bit from the work you produce. And it is work, enjoyable though it might be, to keep a blog going and growing for 10 years. Thanks for sharing it with all of us.

  6. I confess, I had to laugh when you said you sometimes can get confused when the ads are so large that you wonder if that's part of the post! Haha. I like your site and don't mind your ads and why shouldn't you earn a bit of money if you can. It's mind boggling to me the younger set can get furniture and all sorts of freebies as well as ads that probably pay them nicely. I don't mind that if it's done well when they feature items and doesn't come off feeling like a sales person in your living room. :-)
    Thanks for the information.

  8. I have followed you since very near the beginning, and I don't mind the ads on your blog at all. Thank you for putting forth the effort to blog. Your blog always gives me a sense of peace and calm, and I can't tell how many times I have gone through all of your archives. Believe me, if you ever decided to publish your archives as a coffee table book I would buy it!! Love the content, the beautiful photography, the recipes, and the lifestyle for those of us trying to live the way we should have been living b4 now (I'm 65 and still learning!) Bless your heart, Janet, from a fan in beautiful NorCal...Becky

  9. It was your style, words, and cottage that had me clicking onto your blog; scribe and be connected to a more "real world" and one that I thrive in. Thank you for all you do; teach, entertain, and allow us a peek into your world.

  12. I'm beginning to think I may be one of your older readers at age 73, but I feel that what you blog about is ageless & timeless. I think it's great that you make a little extra pocket money, & your ads are not the least bit offensive. I have looked into a few of the products you love, & purchased a few. The blogs with the big pop up ads are a bit disconcerting, but it doesn't stop me if the blogger has something that I want to read. But I do prefer your style.

Keep up the good work & stick with your fantastic style & taste...it is truly timeless.

  13. I'm 69 (yikes, how did that happen?) and I've followed you from the beginning. You are so inspiring. Your home, food, fashion and garden. You have helped me in so many ways and i appreciate your kind, simple way of explaining things.
I hope you make millions on your blog!

  14. First of all, you are not writing an old lady blog because you are not an old lady! I guess I think of an old lady as someone who acts old, looks old, etc. I find it hard to believe that that will ever be you no matter how old you become. Really like the dress, it looks great on you. I do know what you mean about ads popping up all over on some blogs and not being sure if you're still reading the blog or if you're reading an advertisement. I find it quite irritating. I appreciate all you share and am happy to support you. So whatever you want to do that will make you more money on this blog please go right ahead.

  15. I love your blog. It's refreshingly honest and down to earth. I enjoy the photographs of your lovely home and beautiful fashion sense. I love reading about your meals and how you shop and store your food in your lovely pantry. I obviously love everything about your blog !!

  16. I am in good company - I'm 61 and have been reading your blog for years. I'm thrilled that you can make a little money by writing it, so I will click away.

I really enjoyed your last post on the Simplicity of One. The word Elegant perfectly describes your blog for me... from the way you dress and decorate your adorable home, to the way you navigate through the profound grief of losing a spouse. I wish I had done that as elegantly at 35, but that was then and I did the best I could.

    Thanks for continuing to inspire.

  17. I'm 68 and find your blog endlessly inspiring. Thanks so much for sharing all you have with your readers, and I hope your life and blog continue to grow and blossom.

  18. I too have been reading your blog for years. It appeals exactly because of it's simplicity and that it's not plastered with ads all over the place. I have stopped reading blogs because the ads are plain obnoxious. Yours are tasteful, appear on the right and don't disturb reading as you scroll down! Thank you for that. I so enjoy your topics, I find them so inspirational. I've also read through the archives many a time, and am looking forward to more! Be well!

  19. Janet, I love your blog so much that I've turned off my ad blocker just for you. I'll start clicking on those google ads when I see something interesting, even if I probably won't buy it. Much love from the Heartland. ❤ Joy

  20. I am 48 and adore your blog. Your style is truly timeless and elegant, yet so simple, clean, and fresh. I have honestly read through all your posts multiple times for ideas on fashion, home decor, recipes, organizational tips. Thanks for this lesson on blogging. I have clicked on and purchased items from some of your links - I am a huge Everlane and Emerson fan (by the way that leopard clutch is gorgeous!). I hope you continues blogging for another 10, 20, 30 years!!

  22. Thank you for this post, Janet. I read some blogs that are full of ads and pop-ups and banners but I always save them until I have energy to navigate the information overload. Your blog is soothing, refreshing, calming, centering and a balm for the mind and soul. It's not "old lady" to enjoy simplicity and elegance - it's an antidote to the complex world we inhabit. That said, I will always read anything and everything you write, however it appears. I poke through your archives often when I'm feeling discombobulated or scattered. Many of your posts read like meditations. Thank you again for continuing to blog. I cannot imagine how discombobulated you yourself feel right now and I'm so happy you trust your community enough to continue to write. Btw.... the ads I get between posts are often "Meet Chinese Women...." I'm not sure what I look at to receive those? Do you think it's my husband??? (HA!)

  23. ps....I love, love, love this H&M dress! I bought the GP & J Baker chinoiserie dress you showed us last year and it's been a stalwart of my closet. xo karen

  24. Thanks for the info! Thanks for not clogging up your blog with all those ads. They truly are seriously annoying. Love the dress and unfortunately it is sold out. Keep posting your gentle and loving thoughts as there is always room for kindness. XX - hb

  25. I just ordered this dress in the reverse colors (blue background) because yours is sold out... if you scroll down, there are others still available in different colors, including a solid black which is so tempting...the price and classic look are perfect for me (FL resident)! Thank you, Janet... I do click on the beautifully curated items you select. I think of this as a bonus when reading your posts : ) So glad there is some monetary benefit, as I often think of how appreciative I am to read your blog and some others I follow... they are pearls, rare and beautiful. 27. I don't think of you as an old ladyat all!
Your blog is lovely as are you.
I used to follow a blog until it got so commercialized that the pop up ads were a dristraction to the content. I cannot stand ads everywhere...yours are subtle and appropriate. Happy to hear that you are able to make some money after all your years of blogging.

  28. So interesting to read, Janet! I think your blog is timeless, elegant & always so inspiring. It also has a sweet gentleness which many other blogs are lacking (some can be very preaching in tone). I am 66 but have recommended your blog to woman of varying ages & they all love it! You are a gem & I am so glad I found your blog, actually through the County Living article in which your darling home was featured years ago!
By the way, how are your roses doing? I remembered your lamenting that they did not do well after all the trees next door shaded them too much. Hope they are learning to cope with the elements! Always sending you love & a big hug -

  29. Janet,

You could also use Amazon, because I have purchased books that you kinda recommended (Living the Simple Life by Elaine St. James and The Joy of Less by Francine Jay) and also bought the O'Cedar dusting mop head (blue on one side and striped on the other). I am in the process of reading The Joy of Less now. I love the book, Living The Simple Life, and read that one in one evening and plan on reading it over and over because like your blog, it is comforting.

Thank you so much for being such an inspiration to me. I always get inspired when I read it. Perhaps you could make a big coffee table book from your blog and please make the pictures BIG of your home. I mean BIG like your Ralph Lauren book.

    Sincerely,
    Debra from SENC

  30. Thank you for your honesty. I wish you could make more from your blog, I find it informative and (oddly) peaceful to read.

  31. I have loved following along with you all these years. I think it is great that you make a little money, keep it up.

  32. I personally don't like ads on blogs and don't have any myself, but I have to say that yours aren't intrusive at all. I've been on blogs where there are so many ads, they're popping up at the bottoms of photos and even while reading. That turns me off so I simply exit the blog without reading.

I totally understand the reason why a lot of bloggers choose to use ads if they bring in revenue. Who knows, I might start minimally using them myself one day.

Love the H&M dress you're wearing, BTW. Looks great on you with your long, shapely legs!

  33. Your blog was the first ever blog I read. I think I caught you right near the start 2009. The reason I loved it right from the start is that we have the same taste in clothes, decorating, gardening etc etc. I loved your estate sale/yard sale finds, room tours, outfit of the day, anything garden. I really enjoyed all things about meal planning, what you got at the grocery store. I love your minimal approach to clothes and how to style them. I really enjoyed your recipes and still make some of them, vegan ceasor salad, mushroom risotto, chili and many more.So all of these things go hand in hand with your budget and I am interested in all of them.

  34. I'm very happy that you have a bit of income from your blog. Your ads are very tastefully and unobtrusively placed. (And they are items I like looking at!) I can't believe that dress was only $19. I am on a low-carb diet now, and my goal is to wear a dress again and feel comfortable in it. I hope you will continue to share the beauty and simplicity of your lifestyle. Your blog is one of my all-time favorites for sure. You have always stayed true to yourself.

  37. Hello Janet,

I’m glad to give you my clicks because of how transparent and community oriented this blog is. You’ve created a lovely space where we can share our interest in living simply and meaningfully in a very complex world. I am not at the same stage of life as you, but the conversations generated here about saving vs. spending, of living simply, of knowing oneself rather than just being led by desires or habits, at such a rare conversation online.

Please keep doing what you’re doing. If you get any complaints at all, I doubt it’s about what you do...as much as people have grown cynical due to the manipulative advertisements that entice us everywhere. It’s unfair to paint you with the same brush, just because you have ads. It is certainly still our responsibility as your readers to choose whether to click or not. And therein lies the essential difference: you provide us with choice and do not manipulate based on desire and bypassing our judgment.

I join everyone in saying, too, my interest in any money matters topic you wish to bring up. I just recently bought bought a (very small) home...and am loving the patience it’s teaching me to fill it with things that matter. And also extra accountability to be careful of where my money goes, and why.

    You’re in my prayers,
    Joy

  38. I must say I like your blog so much better than most. I do follow a few others, but find the ads pretty much all over the place very distracting and annoying. I certainly get that the bloggers make money that way, but I really enjoy the simplicity of yours. And speaking of simplicity, I also very much enjoyed the last (I think) blog post, "The Simplicity of One" - very clever!

  40. When I wake up in the morning sit down with my coffee and open my iPad. Your blog entry is one of the things I LOVE to see! There's nothing heavy or jarring on here. It's lighthearted and positive and I love to see your simple little house that you take such care to make so nice on a dime and without being wasteful. I love to read your posts about living simply and beautifully and I also love your easy fashion sense. I'm in my fifties and all I want is to do is declutter the nonsense and simplify down to the things that matter most. Your blog is beautiful to look at and inspiring so I'm so glad you decided to continue with it❤️

  41. Such a cute new top! I read another blogger who said she only buys things that are a 4.0. Everything else brings down her grade point average. So if a top is a 3.9 or a pair of jeans is only a 3.5, she passes because it isn't good enough. I am trying to remember that.

  42. I love your blog, for a long time now.. So graceful and you have decorum, much needed during these times. I appreciate the over 59-60 theme. Keep doing what you are doing❤️

  43. Thank you for sharing. I enjoy every word and picture you post. Have been following for years. If you ads more ads, I will still click away knowing that it gets you closer to your goal. Have prayed for you and your family.
