lesson learned

Ok so about this lesson.  Over the course of the last few months I've been decluttering and selling and whatnot.  I decided to splurge on the above coffee table.  I adore this little table.  It's from World Market right here.

It's called the Thad and it retails for $299.  The person that helped me with the purchase signed me up for all kinds of discounts upon checkout and it knocked $100 off the price.  Like I just said, I adore this little table. My inspiration came from Sid and Ann Mashburn's home.

Pinterest is a dangerous thing ya know?  But how chic.

So anyway back to my lesson.  I couldn't wait to get it home and unwrap it.  I fell in love the minute I saw it in its place.  I instantly felt younger and hipper!  I found the antique Persian rug at an estate sale and to me it was pretty darn perfect.  There is only one problem and that is comfort.  If this room were a sitting room only it would have been fine but this is where we watch tv and lounge at night and you can't really comfortably put your feet up on an lucite coffee table.  Well you can but it's not comfortable.  L was on board all the way but in the end it was me who wanted to be comfortable over stylish. So on Friday I boxed it back up and returned it.  All mistakes are just chances to learn and what I learned was that it's probably better to leave well enough alone, that comfort is key and Pinterest creates all kinds of discontent in me.

So everything is back to normal - whatever that is.  xo

PS - For a moment I thought about making the blog private and I still might but I will give you warning if I do in case there is a recipe you may want.  I love you guys but the internet is getting to be too much for me some days.  Thank you for putting up with me. xo

    1. I check your blog daily because, as others have said, it is a source of inspiration, motivation and hope. I'm still working on getting rid of five things a day, and I so appreciate that guidance. If you do decide to make this a private blog, please let me know how I may be invited.

      Thank you Janet

  2. Yay- so happy to see your blog today! I understand your need for privacy and completely respect your decision. Having said that- I was so so saddened to think that I would never have the chance to see your blog again. It has been such a source of inspiration, encouragement, and calmness to me. Always do what is best for you!!! And thanks for the possible warning should you decide to remove your blog. I will spend endless hours writing down my favorite recipes, tips, and words of wisdom. You rock and you are so awesome!!!!!!!!

  3. Yeah me too. When I first saw that your blog was down I had a huge pit in my stomach. Wish there was a way for you to disconnect but only come back when you feel like it. -But still keep the blog up. I refer to it every week looking up subjects you've talked about. Your blog is like my teacher! Also love the story about your table. Sometimes we have to go through your steps to know that what you had was perfect. Also my wise friend says. It's free to try so why not? I remember that saying in all sorts of situations. Happy Sunday Janet. You are loved here in blogland. Truley loved. Jennifer

  4. I'm not sure how I found your blog, but I just had to leave a comment because the same thing happened to me. I bought what I thought was the perfect rug last week at World Market. I also signed up for multiple discounts and saved quite a bit. When I unrolled it in my living room, I was so disappointed that it looked more green than blue. I tried to live with it for a few days, but now it's rolled up and ready to make the 4 hour trip back to Mpls. to return it. I also ordered a jute rug from Overstock that I'm stuck with because it will cost me half the price of the rug to ship it back. ugh I'm going to have my daughter help me list it on Facebook and hopefully I don't take too much of a loss.

Your home is just lovely and I've enjoyed your blog, but I totally get how overwhelming it all can be.

  5. I can't tell you the number of times I've done the same. I once special ordered a sofa and two chairs and ended up not liking it so much, I returned it! Ugh. But, sometimes we'd like a change, and if we don't try things, we'll never know. Think of all the changes you made that you ended up loving. More importantly, I just have to say that if you made your blog private, I would totally understand, but would be so, so sad. Yours is one of my FAVORITE blogs. How about giving up Pinterest instead? :)

  6. I want to be on the invited list! I take both pleasure and inspiration in the way you share your journey. Of course, if you end up feeling too invaded, I would absolutely understand the need for privacy. Till then, simply, Thank You! for being a real person, All the best, Jean

  8. Janet, I am just reiterating what the others are saying here. I was worried when I could not enter your blog yesterday, and was going to PM you. It is a refuge and go-to for me, too, even if I very rarely comment (choose instead to e-mail you :-) ). I have always loved your blog, and to this day, have never found another that meets my needs quite like yours does. Your openness and willingness to help has been wonderful, and I thank you for that. I won't tell you what to do, either, but know that you provide so much for so many people!!!! hugs Christina in PA (smile).

  9. Maybe it comes with a little maturity - comfort always trumps! thank goodness you are back. last night I went on to check in with you and was locked out. Panic! Google said I wasn't invited, I couldn't believe it. It said to contact you, but gives no way to do so and just leaves you at a dead end. Isn't that ceazy? Please be sure to put me on your list too if you ever get that notion again!!!

  10. Sounds like we've all been there and done that! Rugs, coffee tables, storage "solutions", etc. I try to keep a mental list of "things I later regretted buying" because I find myself attracted to things that, while pretty and chic, lack some basic utility. And I find the more I pare down, the less inclined I am to re-fill the space.

I, too, would miss you! but respect your need to control the situation.

  11. What a relief it was to be able to access your blog again. You are the voice of reason for me when I need and am seeking simplicity. Thank you, you may not realize how important you are to so many.

  12. Such a shame it didn't work as it looks absolutely perfect in the space. But I completely understand the need for comfort.

Hasn't our weather been spectacular? Everywhere you look something is blooming and the light this weekend has been amazing. Such a beautiful time of year for Southern California.

Hope your blog continues to be accessible, I have really enjoyed visiting you.

  16. I love that your projects feel "real" to me. Most of us work within budget constraints, or have homes that are not mcmansions. I am at the same stage of life and am attempting to declutter my physical and mental spaces. I enjoy the fact that you acknowledge that although lovely, the table does not meet your lifestyle. My husband is a sprawler- very tough on furniture! Life became much happier when I accepted that and decorated with it in mind. Life is easier and happier when we equip our homes, our hearts, and our closets for the lives we ACTUALLY live- rather than those we imagine.

  17. Totally understand the whole internet thing getting to be too much-- I just deactivated my Facebook page and plan on deleting it for good. What is it about your blog that wears on you. Do you feel that you have to post every week? Do you feel you need to answer to every comment? I can see where that would get to be too much . What if you post once a month and turn off the comments. I follow other blogs that don't take comments and it doesn't bother me. Just a thought. I only read a few blogs and your is one of my favorites, but understand if it's getting to be too much. Take care

  19. Hey Janet, It would be fun to see an update about how you feel about the table like a year from now. Do you sometimes think, yeah, this new "whatever the new thing is" brings a fresh, newer more hip (and whatever adjective) when you first add it, then a year or so later, you come back to something you have had for years like an old faithful friend. As someone who has searched for the perfect coffee table for my small home living room for years. I know it is easier than finding a comfortable chair though!

  20. Hi Janet...i too Love your beautiful blog and read it like a favorite book filled with inspiration ❤ I have been decluttering as well and just redid our gathering room into a fresh space for Spring. Thank you. -Nancy

  21. May I ask how a blog becomes overwhelming? I am not being snarky...I really don't know the challenges.

Why not just post when inspiration strikes, and if the comments are a source stress. don't have comments at all. I would think most of us who love your blog do not read it for the comments, and would not miss them at all.

But, we do love the pictures and your writing....and that is all that is important anyway.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. i don't think the blog is overwhelming, it's more the internet itself. there is so much too it, lack of privacy (that's my own doing) and the sheer volume of blogs and social media to keep up with. life sounds simpler to just walk away from it all. :) xo

  23. I'm not sure what taking your blog private means but the above comment about getting rid of comments and only blogging when you want without feeling a sense of obligation sounds like a great solution. I have been following you along time and would miss you. And as I said many times your cottage is my favorite! 💖

  24. My heart sank when I couldn't access your blog. I don't think I've ever commented before, but I love your blog: it is gentle and sweet and pretty...and honest. And I love seeing how your are furnishing your home. I have begun getting rid of things because you gave me the inspiration. It is very hard, but I plan to move to a smaller house and I know I need to tackle the elimination process. It really helps to know I am not alone! I don't have a blog and I don't know all the issues with them, but if you do decide to go private, I hope there is a way I will still be able to read yours.

  31. I do love that table but I get you 100%. Not the lounging table. When we watch tv we need a big space for relaxing and placing all of our snack dishes and wine bottles.
But I do have a funny story about this table because my friend Laura has it in her living room. She has it in her older home in the front room, fireplace, two sofas, the place for drinking wine and having snacks before dinner, the tv is in another room.
We were there for dinner a couple of months ago with a group of friends and for whatever reason the group had dispersed here and there for a few minutes, mostly to get more snacks/wine I think. Anyway, my husband and I were alone around the table, in front of the fire, very idyllic, when a giant bat flew into the room and I'm not kidding that thing had a 6' wingspan. I started screaming as one does and we both hid under the coffee table! I think we might have lifted it off the floor trying to hide under it because I'm not tiny at 5'7" and my husband is built like a linebacker and is 6' tall. It was very hilarious but the good news is Laura and her husband are very accustomed to the bats in their house and they managed to somehow capture it and let it go outside in about 2 minutes.
We're still laughing about it but I also love that coffee table because it is a Lucite Shield.
As far as your blog going private I think I know how you're feeling. Myself- I don't know what to do about this issue at the moment. But I'm thinking about it too. Love to you and yours my friend. XO

  35. Janet, I love your blog. It's one of only two that I read. If you make it a private blog, I would love an invite. I don't care how often you post, it just makes my day when I get an email telling me you have a new post!

I'm so sorry if internet trolls are wearing you down. It's like inviting people into your home, and then they wipe their muddy feet all over your nice furniture, tell you you're awful, and then make you feel like it's your fault to boot. I don't understand what it is about the "anonymity" of the internet that brings out the worst in some people.

Whatever you decide to do, please know that I have been greatly blessed by your blog presence, and would miss you terribly. :)

  36. For a few days I couldn't view your blog, something about members only. I struggle with this computer since my husband died. No doubt I'm doing something wrong but if you limit access, might Gail, in northern California be included on your list of those permitted readers? I would hate to lose you. You soothe in so many ways.

I have a question: I picked up some kids pajamas yesterday at the thrift store. They absolutely reek of some perfumy-chemical. I thought I could bring them home and wash them in hot water and they'd be OK. Then I tried baking soda wash with a vinegar rinse. Still there. Any suggestions?

I wish you all the best whilst you think it over and I really hope you haven't been upset by any comments, a lovely lady like you deserves nothing but kindness.
Oh and your lounge is looking lovely, agree that the space should be somewhere you can relax not feel you have to be precious with furniture and accessories.

  40. I was so distraught when I couldn't access your blog that I contacted Sue from Une Femme to see if she also found it blocked. I was hoping it was a mistake. Yours is one of the few blogs I follow regularly and would miss your fun and inspiring words. But, I certainly understand. The internet has become a distressing place. During this year's election, I had to unfollow several people because of the vile negativity that came through their Facebook posts. Not necessarily the people I was connected to, but their followers. My brother was among them. So I would understand if you had to go private. Make it something you love and look forward to.

I think you made the right decision on the table. It looked good, but I loved your original design. Maybe the little table will find a way into your design aesthetic in the future.

God bless, Janet and good luck with whatever you decide.

I've done something like the Lucite table buy, many times from observing pretty rooms and thinking I'd like to duplicate a "look". I've now got a design inspiration book with color copies of rooms that I want my home to look/feel like and I make sure I don't deviate. At least you were able to return it.

The Lucite table looked pretty but you can't get by on looks alone - it has to be comfortable especially if it is the room you use every night. I'm so sorry you feel the need to go private. If you go private will those of us signed up to get notifications have a chance to be included in the private group? I really get the coffee table lesson. I've been tempted to switch out my sturdy pine scrubbed table out for something a bit more chic but my feet are perched on this sturdy old thing everyday. Please don't stop - your blog is one of a handful which I read - after "purging" about 50 which I deemed unhelpful or just not worth my time. It is because of you I have decluttered my home, clothes and life - and I am so much better because of it.

  70. Hi Janet,
I, too, love your blog, but do what feels right for you. I would certainly miss your wisdom, honesty, and style, but can understand a need for privacy. As you say, kindness is never out of style.

  71. Janet, if you decide to make your blog private, please add me to your list of invited readers! (if that is okay with you). I love reading it- I find it a quiet and inspiring place, especially in this increasingly hectic world.

  72. I sort of know what you mean, in some ways. I'm down to just a few beloved blogs but somebody is always giving a tip about something that creates the need to have the same thing...buy this, buy that; especially books, which I have too many of already. It can contribute to the more, more, more syndrome instead of the less is more. If I didn't have those blogs or sites...if I didn't still get a few paper mail order catalogs, too...I'd be less tempted to buy/want. It's my own lack of self-discipline.

You should do what's right for yourself, Janet. I'd miss you and your blog, but no judgments here! Maybe you don't need to do the blog anymore, like maybe your life is diff now than what you felt and what you were going through in your life when you first started it. Blogs can run their course with the blog owner; blogs can run their course with readers; I've seen it happen time and time again. It can become a leash when maybe you need to be free. I have come to understand from others that owning and maintaining an active blog is a lot of work.

For the past few days, I could not get into your blog at all. I was prevented, by blogger, wanting me to first enter a google account, or something; I don't remember exactly. But, I was blocked. I sorta panicked...so, yes, if you do make that big DECISION, just give us warning (some blog owners don't and just leave you hanging, to where you wonder if they died, had something else horrible happen to them, etc.)...but know that your blog has been very valuable to so many of us readers and we'll always take away so much we learned from you and have gratitude for it.

Wish you well, dear. You're such a good woman. Don't be too hard on yourself about that table. You have so many lovely things in your beautiful home already. I personally feel it needs no tweaking!

    1. We've become this world where everybody has to have a written/verbal reaction. In previous times, people were more reserved. (They had manners.) Our right to speak out is totally important...but now, people often just spew, to where grace and dignity go out the window. Being polite and kind, you're right, should never go out of fashion. If I'm on a news site, I never read the comments because people out there are mean and angry so much of the time and this does not contribute to my wellbeing. My husband says Facebook has become intolerable. I'm glad I never got into some of the social media that's out there. All those angry people need to work off their frustrations and personal issues by going to the gym, swim some laps or go clean the house from top to bottom. Work off that bad energy.

So, I can imagine what may sift through your blog and how troubling it is for you to have to read some of it. What if you just kept your instagram account? Is that easier? Or is that a depository for nasty comments, too?

I went back and read what everybody else had to say after I'd left my own comment above. What it says, Janet, is that your blog has been a success. It was a worthwhile effort. You are loved. If you say goodbye, it's okay. Endings and beginnings, right? What you did here counted.

    2. hi vicki. it really isn't the comments that are the issue. someone v close to me had their bank acct hacked and it scares me! in this day and age our privacy is getting harder and harder to protect and here i am laying it all out there for everyone and i feel vulnerable now. so i still don't know what i'll do. but thank you always always for your thoughtful comments. x

    4. For what it's worth, I was just listening to a podcast this week in which the expert guest said the best way to protect your accounts and online persona is to use a password manager system or app. There are free or cheap ones out there if you google (and pick from a reputable source). Most people get hacked because either their password is easily screened by a hackers computer (like a word or phrase. Passwords should always be jibberish), or because they use one password for multiple sites. If one system is hacked, they now have your password to other sites. No intent to alarm anyone, just passing along newly garnered information.
      Cheers!

  73. What a BUMMER cause that table really looks cool. But I agree, comfort is more important. Maybe you could think about a lucite side table or console table somewhere instead? It's a look I really love, and it compliments your style so well.
You know I love you to pieces. I want you to be happy. Whatever you decide about your blog....you have my support 100%. Hope you figure it out, and selfishly I hope to still take a peak into your life! xoxo

There are already so many comments I feel there is nothing else to add - however I feel compelled to include one more thank you for the unabashed honesty of your blog, for the inspiration to pursue simplicity, and for providing a completely non-judgemental, non-consumer centric blog. It is a veritable pleasure to visit. I selfishly hope you continue - but of course, not if it is time for you to move on. I do hope you leave it up as I have not read all your past posts yet!

  75. This resonated with me! My daughter always chooses style of comfort/practical. Anyways - I love your home and your blog. If you go private how can I join?

  76. Oh no!! I've never commented before but I NEVER miss your blog posts. I would be very sad if you leave.

  77. Selfishly weighing in after many years of lurking. Your blog is life, as my 14-year-old says. Like Stephanie, I wonder how I could join in.

The lucite table is stunning, but I hear you on the comfort factor. The decorating equivalent of clothing that requires constant adjusting.

  78. I follow you on instagram also and would be sad to not read your blog... that said, people these days seem to be so snarky and mean so I understand your desire to privatize😀... There are lots of us who would like to be able to read... you bring sanity and peace to the world ! Coco

  79. Noooo Janet! If you made your blog private what does that mean exactly, I didn't know there was a way to do that...? How would you determine who gets to read it? Seriously yours in the only blog I have been reading lately. I would be so sad if I couldn't see it anymore. :( :( :( :(

I was so shocked you returned the table after you said you loved it so much. But I get it...sometimes practicality has to override style. My husband wouldn't like it either if he couldn't put his feet up.

    1. Linda, my same question; how does a 'private' blog work? Janet will answer soon.

You both are lucky you can even HAVE a coffee table. My husband refuses; says they're just in the way. I miss having a coffee table in front of the sofa, but it's a real thing with him...so, I try to respect it, as he asks for so little from me when it comes to the house & decor.

By the way, I did see your March 17 comment (to me) on a previous Janet post, Linda, and I replied (I think two posts back here, and Janet's graciously, I think, still allowing comments on it).

Congrats on being a new grandmother and I hope you're feeling better.

(Thanks for letting Linda and I 'talk' for a moment, Janet!)

    4. i don't know a heck of a lot about privatizing blogs but it's an option that blogger offers. i think that if you make your blog private you can only have 100 followers so that's not an option. i just needed a minute to catch my breath bc life is happening pretty fast at the moment. i hate just leaving it hanging bc then readers start to worry and the option seemed good but then the emails poured in and people were worried so that was a big fail on my part. anyway it's back and like i said if i do go i'll give plenty of warning! thanks ladies! x

  94. "All mistakes are just chances to learn and what I learned was that it's probably better to leave well enough alone, that comfort is key and Pinterest creates all kinds of discontent in me."

I SO love that. I feel the same way about Instagram and Pinterest creating all kinds of discontent in me. As much as I love both and try only to fill my boards and feed with things that inspire me, many times that feeling of I wish I could have that [insert lifestyle, object, haircut, etc.].

I just read another wonderful observation on Instagram about Instagram -- last week from Gluten Free Girl:
"This has become a documenting space of glossy, even-lighted shots of polish and tiny planned imperfections. I grow weary."

I love to come to your blog because I admire your chosen lifestyle. I think your decision to be present and find what matters in the every day is refreshing and sustainable. I like the simplicity and joy you embrace in your home and your wardrobe, your diet and your mindset. I visit sporadically, but always leave feeling better about the world because there are decent, kind, thoughtful, and authentic people such as yourself.

I wish you abundant happiness in your continued journeys.

Your blog is a breath of fresh air, discussing real topics we mere mortals can relate to. Too many bloggers hocking product these days for their own personal gain, not necessarily believing in it and its value. Continue being true to you and I will enjoy reading for as long as you deem appropriate. You go girl!

  97. When I saw the top photo of your living room, I was squinting, trying to find your coffee table...it had disappeared, and there was a bare spot except for some floating plants or something...it just didn't look right! My opinion may be odd...but I adore the ottoman you have used there, and I sorely missed it...I think it is perfect for your room! So...I, for one, am glad you learned your lesson! (said with love and a very big grin!)

I so enjoy your blog...it is one or maybe 4 or 5 that I read, and actually I refer to a lot. I am just beginning to renovate my parents farmhouse, they both passed recently, and I am not gifted with interior design the way you are...but I know what I like when I see it and several things about your home I want to incorporate into this one...if you don't mind. Smile.

I make your 5 minute bread regularly, and I want to try more of your recipes...

I guess I'm saying, I'd love to be able to access your blog in the future of you don't mind? I hope you'll continue to blog, if it works for you, cause I really enjoy reading (and I'll miss it terribly if you stop)...but if you need to stop, could you just leave it up as a resource?

Whatever you decide...I wish you all the best...and I thank you for all you have shared here...it's helped many people including myself! Blessings!

I have always found it to be a place of reason, grace and inspiration. today I realized I had not checked it in several days and was at first glad to see there was a new post, then distressed that you may be ending it. of course I would like to be invited to you"private" blog, but I have no idea what this means. I am somewhat stymied by a lot of the new technology, I remember when my family's phone was a party line and we had a 10 inch black and white TV. to this day I have an old flip phone, not a smart phone. and I still sign in as anonymous cause I cant figure how to otherwise. hope you will reconsider.

  102. Count me in as one who would miss you and your blog terribly! You and FF are the only two blogs I follow religiously (although I almost never comment), and my 17 year old daughter hears about what either of you are up to on an almost daily basis lol. You are such a calming, sane voice in a messy, confused world, and I love to check in, especially when I am in extra need of a gentle dose of clarity! I understand your need to detach however; I avoid facebook and pinterest etc, although I love IG as I can curate my feed there easily! If you decide to end the blogging adventure, I hope you can retain the archives but shut off comments, I go through them often for inspiration! Your voice is unique, calm and clear, and I echo the commenters above who would miss you, but respect your need to take care of your own well being. I hope if your blog remains, but privately, that I could access it as well. Best wishes, Laurel xo
PS I adore the lucite table as well, but prefer the comfort and convenience of a sturdier coffee table for my lifestyle!

I have removed myself from the day to day internet things like facebook etc because they ARE overwhelming and I found they don't really offer anything I'm interested in. As a person who has never been on Facebook, does not watch tv, and reads only three blogs, I still sometimes find myself succumbing to the seductive and ultimately, dissatisfying abyss of Pinterest. I understand your concerns, but would really, really miss your perspective and the community you've brought together in the "comments" (even though this is my first time sharing). I came home from surgery today, feeling sad that a close out-of-town friend whom I would normally call, for some cheer, passed away two weeks ago. So, after cuddling up with my children, my 11 year old son suggested that I peek in on that person (you), who always lifts my spirits and seems to "understand." Thank you.

For three years, I have worked for my friends at their little antique shop here in town. A couple of weeks ago, I let them know I would be leaving; not to go anywhere else, or do something different, I just had to step away from the drama that was drawn to them. Lots of people have said they hate to see me go, and would miss me, but I have to do it for ME. Any you have to do it for YOU. I hope you won't go, because we'll miss you deeply, but we'll understand. I know I will.

I have been reading your blog for quite a long time, but rarely comment. If you do decide to go private, I would love to be invited too!

  137. On the plane, we hear,"Take care of yourself first, then you can help others."
You have built a caring community here as many have said, but your life, privacy and happiness are more important than anything.

  138. I was wondering what happened when I was denied excess for a bit. I have been following for years and enjoy your posts.

  139. I really understand what you're saying, Janet. You have a global audience and almost everything of your life is out there forever and what isn't is findable. The whole concept of personal privacy (as our generation knew it) is gone forever. I think young people have grown up like this and it doesn't scare them - but it does me. I've been putting off starting to blog about my family history - do I really want strangers to read about it?

  140. Dear Janet

I can only reiterate all of the lovely, wise things that everybody else has already sent to you. Totally understand your point of view - totally hoping that your blog stays :)

The Gardeners Cottage has always been a balm for my soul, and an inspiration / aspiration too. You absolutely should do what is comfortable for you. I would like to add my vote to the is it possible for the blog to stay up archived in some way. Maybe make the posts about family private.

    Wishing you grace and blessings

  141. Oh, Janet, I know you have to do what is comfortable for you, but The Gardener's Cottage has been a part of life for me for so many years. I'd be lost without it to refer to for recipes & inspiration. Perhaps, your long time followers could be approved to follow? And I love your living room just the way it is! xoxo

  142. Dear Janet
What can I add but to say I would so miss your blog! I felt bereft the other day when I couldn't access it. I love all your posts - the home/simplicity/decluttering ones are so inspiring! I haven't commented often, but have read all your posts - some several times!
I understand the desire to protect your privacy, & if fewer posts will help you to achieve that obviously I think we would all understand, but you have developed a lovely supportive community & it would be such a shame to lose that!! Xx

  144. Thank you for sharing your lovely home with us. It's a tragic commentary on life in general that some readers choose to be rude and belittling I can understand why you would opt for privacy. I have enjoyed so much your blog for several years and will miss you if you decide to leave us.

  145. I'm grateful for years of wonderful inspiration. I think I've been reading since almost the beginning:) I hope to be included in case you do decide to go private, I'd miss you!

  146. I love the lucite table, but comfort trumps style any day! And please don't make your blog private, I would miss you terribly. I have learned so much from you and continue to be inspired by your ways everyday!

  147. Just popping in to say that your blog is one of the few that I read. I would be sad if you left (or went private) and I couldn't see your blog. Sending you love, light and good vibes. XOalicia

  148. Oh, it will be sad if you take your blog private, but I do understand the internet becoming a bit much. I have to limit social media and I stay away from the news altogether, other than reading The Facts for our local news. Your blog is a rare bit of light on the web!

  149. I just found your blog and absolutely love it! Will be if you go private but I do understand your reasoning.

  150. Oh I just found your blog and it is lovely and charming! It looks like you are considering making it private and I hope you dont but will resect your decision of course. I recently retired and have been browsing the blogs of women out there and yours is one that I bookmarked. It was so fun to read about your design style, ideas and tips. I do hope you you can "Keep Calm and Carry On". Cheers!

  151. Hi,
Been reading your blog for about a year, and never commented. I am hoping you don't go private! It's so refreshing to read your thoughts, because you keep it so real! I relate to so much of what you share. Hope you keep writing and sharing your lovely home, flowers and thoughts. Thank you! Theresa

  152. Oh, Janet, I had to laugh at your "younger and hipper" comment. I, too, fell into that trap recently. I purchased a coffee table that I loved, but sadly it just doesn't fit in with the rest of my more traditional furniture. It does make me feel younger and hipper, but the reality is that I am just not that hip! Nor am I willing to re-decorate around a single item, even if I do like it. I read your blog for minimalist inspiration and appreciate it when someone can embrace a simple lifestyle and share it in the way you do.

  153. I just found you! I hope you choose to stay public! Thanks for sharing beauty and calmness ... it made me feel good inside to read through your posts.

  154. Hello Janet, I have been a long time reader and I had a vegan blog too. I understand the feeling of being too public.

  155. I will really miss your blog if you go private, but I understand. You have inspired me to live more simply, eat much less animal products and just enjoy the moments. I also love your house and that you have decorated it so creatively using a lot of second hand items and antiques.
