sequins

You know what I know about heavily beaded and sequined tops?  Nothing.  But since I purchased this vintage top the other day for $20, I'm learning.  I do know that it was a steal.  It weighs about 5 lbs and there isn't a sequin or bead missing.  I can't imagine what a new top like this would cost today but my guess would be in the hundreds.

The color is spectacular and it's lined in the silkiest fabric.  I don't know if it is silk but it feels like it. Between the lining, beading and sequins I'm not sure how to care for something this delicate but I will find out.  Also, what do I wear it with?

The only thing I could think of was jeans.  I know how boring but besides black pants it's all I've got. Gimme some time and I'll think of something else.  Meanwhile, my kid present has come out so good.  I'm so thrilled with it, probably way more than my poor granddaughter will be when she gets it. But it's nice to be excited about making/giving a present.  I think that's the key for me to enjoying these holidays, to look at them through a child's eye.

I also am looking for a dress to wear to a swanky NYE party that we've been invited to. So stayed tuned for some more mediocrity coming your way soon. x

  1. I would wear the sequin top with black pants to the party and stop searching for a swanky dress. Get some killer earrings and you are ready to go! Beautiful!

  2. You look about 18! And beautifully 18, in the way that only gorgeous fit women in their 50s can:). I think jeans are the best way to wear it. Or maybe a miniskirt:). xox.

  6. The sequin top seems meant for the swanky NYE party - with black wide floaty pants ? Or just regular back pants ! And fancy sandals... have fun!

  7. How can you not love sequins?!!!
I echo the recco (couldn't resist) on the white jeans. If you don't have a pair, I have about a dozen that haven't seen the light of day since...hmmm...I think the Britney Spears Circus Tour (not to suggest I was in the BSCT, just that I would have been lushing around at that time wearing white jeans). I had a consultation with a bride yesterday, she brought an antique costume necklace and asked if we could use it as a headband. Which I think is a great idea for an NYE hair look. It worked pretty well with a good base tease, a few anchoring bob pins and hair pins the length of the chain.

    1. I wear white jeans in a non ironic way often. Plus a I endorse a good base tease xx

    2. I would too if they still looked good on me! A base tease is the answer to many of life's questions.

  8. Off white crepe palazzo pants or trouser slacks. Faux Fuchsia should be able to help with garment care!

  10. What a beautiful top! If possible, could it be fitted a little more at the waist? Would that look good?

  11. The first thing I thought of was how great it would go with tailored, heavy-crepe, maybe even pressed-pleat, white-cream slacks. I have two beaded cardigans I got in the 1980s...one is that same turquoise and the other is, of all things, goldenrod-yellow. You can't have anything fight with the embellishment; you've got to wear it with a solid neutral. What amazes me is that you found a vintage top like that and it's intact. It is so easy to lose sequins on a garment. I wouldn't trust it at a dry cleaner unless you know the dry cleaner/laundry very, very well. In my opinion, it's a candidate for gentle handwashing, and I don't mean in the washing machine's delicate cycle. This is a handwash-in-the-sink, then blotted carefully between clean towels and air-dried flat. I don't see this going with black pants, but you'll just have to try it out with your wardrobe. This you can do...you've got the knack. Congrats; looks like indeed a score. I never find things like that; lucky you!.

    1. Janet, rain is supposed to hit in 2-3 hours! I've got every bucket out I can to catch as much rainwater as possible. At first I did it for the plants but we're in mandatory restrictions where we're not allowed now to pressure-wash the house and my hubby is getting ready to paint the house exterior over holiday vacation. We got about half done on the pressure-washing before the newest restrictions. So, at least with the buckets of rainwater, I'm hoping he can handwash off the rest of the house. I can't see how that could put us in violation!?! Never thought to see handwashing off a house...like you handwash a sweater...or a sequinned top!!

    2. Okay, last comment so I'm not the Vicki-Vicki-Vicki. My experience is that sequins cost money. I love them so am always attracted. Workmanship...time/labor...for this kind of garment is not cheap. The sewing is labor-intensive. I formerly would spend 'way too much money on clothes although I would shop the sales. So, I got my two solid-sequins, long-sleeved cardigans...this is for evening/formal-wear...on sale but they still were too expensive. I confess to say that one was heavily marked down to $175 and the other was over $250 at end of season. I never spend that kind of money on clothes now and perhaps to someone else that's not so expensive...I had a 'boss' in the '90s who was showing me her $500 everyday blazer from somewhere and I was shocked although this was the norm for her...but I look at it today and, yikes, I think it's extravagant. I often look at fashion blogs where they link to a top designer either on the designer's site, or Nordstrom, or Bergdorfs, Neiman-Marcus, etc. - usually something a celeb wears on the red carpet - and the cost of beading and materials usually takes my breath away in my little momentary fashion fantasy...not hundreds, but thousands of dollars. Some of the celebs' beaded gowns...beads, sequins, paillettes...are between $10,000-$15,000 and that's just the ones you can get off the rack; goodness knows what the bespoke/custom gowns cost...

  13. Fabulous!
My sister has my mother's sequinned top and she wears it with a black skirt or pants..
I like it with your jeans...very Rancho Mirage / Palm Springs chic.
Glad that you found the gift for your granddaughter I hope you'll share it with us after she receives it.

  14. Perfection with jeans and also black pants and Stephen Andrew is right as usual about the white jeans. I adore this top and it makes me so happy to see you wearing it and looking so well. xx

  15. Beautiful top ! I love it with jeans, but would also try it with a pencil skirt - and you have the figure to wear a pencil skirt !

  16. Dressy white pants and you're set for NYE! Black pants can work too and of course jeans. Great find! Just my opinion but I would not put fancy earrings with it. I would keep everything else simple and let that top shine!

  17. I think an ivory pencil skirt or perhaps, black. Of course, ivory or black dress pants would work, too. You should wear the new ensemble to the swanky NYE party! You are lovely, as always!

  18. Beautiful! Black slacks, or long black skirt to dress it up. Jeans to dress it down.

  19. I agree with everyone about the dressy winter white pants or palazzo pants! That would be stunning!

  21. What a gorgeous find! And it looks so good on you! Love the suggestions for wearing it with white/cream palazzo pants.

  22. What a wonderful, unique find, Janet. This makes me think of my mother's sequined short-sleeved sweater that is in a box in my closet. It dates to before I was born (probably mid-60s) and is entirely covered in ivory/mother-of-pearl sequins. I wore it once with a short black velvet skirt when I was in my 20s and went to a fancy party (haven't worn it since). Why don't you wear your sequin top with an cream or black skirt to the NYE party? I think it would look very swanky on you.

P.S. I didn't read any of the comments above before leaving this comment. I'm sure others have suggested the same thing!

  23. Well you look swell. You attract great finds like I attract....I don't know, inappropriate relationships? I love it with jeans, but the idea of palazzo pants for NYE sounds just right.

  24. stunning! That's why you should always pick up the piece you swear you would never pick up, let alone wear. I like the turquoise maxi suggestion and the white jeans....I would look like a poofy cotton ball in white jeans but I haven't seen an outfit on you yet that you don't look smashing in. I would pair it with a slim black skirt but I always play it safe.

It sounds like you're having a merry holiday so far. I hope your happy spirit continues long after. xoxo

  25. It's lovely. My question is who made the great pants your wearing in the photo? I want a pair just like them.

  26. I'm surprised nobody has suggested a long floaty chiffon skirt with this skirt for contrast of texture - I think that would look beautiful in any of the colours featured in the top...

  27. It looks lovely, and with the jeans great - but I think Dianne (no1 commenter) nailed it with her comment - NYE!

  28. I love that top! its so pretty. It does look good with your jeans. I think it would look great as well with a black wool flare skirt. It would really dress it up.
