on saturday there was another great estate sale around the corner from my house.
the woman that lived there taught art at the university of redlands.
her craftsman home was filled with wonderful art and artifacts that she collected on her travels.
going from room to room you could see a life well lived and thoroughly enjoyed.
there was such a warm wonderful spirit throughout her home.
each possession telling a great story.
the house was filled with original art, amazing books, beautiful antiques
and records! my kind of house.

when i entered the living room this antique chair with its charming slipcover caught my eye.
there was no way i thought i'd be able to afford it, prices were running a little high.
but when i removed the books and blankets stacked on top of it and found the price tag that said $50 i was sure it was a mistake.
but that was the price so into the back of the prius it went.

i've wanted a comfy chair for my room to curl up in with a book and now i have one.

as soon as i got home i took the slipcover off and ran it through the washing machine and hung it out to line dry.
i just love it.
i thought this lumbar pillow i made with a kelly wearstler fabric remnant would work well with it.
i love the way the more modern geometric trellis pattern mixes with the roses.
the thing i loved most about this estate sale was the wonderful feeling i got walking through the house. i suppose all our possessions tell a story about who we are and how we live.
what story does your house tell?

I think your home is a perfect combination of elegance and simplicity already, and then you add something like this that makes it even better. I have wanted a little chair like this for my bedroom for awhile - I am so jealous!
ReplyDeleteSo pretty. I am a sucker for florals and how great is it that this had such a great slipcover. Good find.
ReplyDeleteI used to have a floral chair similar to that in my bedroom at my big Victorian before it burned down. I loved to curl up in that chair, you will really enjoy it! I just love estate sales!! I like to buy the old cookbooks with the hand written recipes in them and the pages are all splattered. Then you know it's a great recipe.

It's looks perfect in your room. Love the combination of the floral and that pillow.

What a cute chair!! It would also look great in a white slip cover.
ReplyDeleteMy house tells the story of a women with eclectic tastes. "Experienced" accessories and furniture, littered with family heirlooms. Comfortable elegance, rules the day at my home.
ReplyDeleteGreat find! I have a chaise and two chairs in my bedroom...one to lounge in, the others to put shoes or pantyhose on (one for husband one for me). Makes the bedroom more of a place to get away and relax, not just sleep.
ReplyDeletethat chair... that pillow... just perfect.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great find Janet. It looks beautiful in your home!

That's a perfect curl-up-with-a-book-in-the-bedroom chair. Awesome price too.
ReplyDeleteI want my whole house to be outfitted form little estate sales around the corner, where everything has a beautiful patina and a story to match!
ReplyDeleteIt is a fantastic chair...great find! I recently found 2 antique chairs that are now part of my eclectic assortment of living room furniture. They were such a great find I had to post about it too! (http://vintagefrenchchic.wordpress.com/2013/04/29/vintage-french-sitting-pretty/). I would have to guess that about 90-95% of all my homes furnishings are second-hand, thrifted or from antique stores. It is just the way I roll.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! I just bought a small, red la-z-boy rocker for $12.50. I was rather proud of myself :)
ReplyDeleteI don't think I'll ever buy new furniture again. There is so much character in the previously loved things.
congrats on your wonderful new chair- love it!!
ReplyDeletexxoj.
I am so so jealous...that would have been the first thing I went to and the first thing in my car. I love that almost everything in my home tells a previous story. There's no way I would buy anything but. I hope my home says well worn and loved. XO
ReplyDeleteWhen you buy anything for your garden, or take home something 'rescued', ask yourself, "Is this piece so wonderful it would be fought over at my estate sale?"
ReplyDeleteEasy.
How this lady would love the story of her traveling chair.
Garden & Be Well, XO Tara
that is a really great point!
DeleteYou have a lovely home.I really enjoy your blog.
ReplyDeleteI love your style, that chair looks like it was waiting just for you.
ReplyDeleteTake Care

Love this chair and the story! I think my house would say " a little cluttered, but cozy and loved". That chair was waiting for you and I think you brought a piece of the love home with you!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous chair! I wish they had those estate sales around here.
ReplyDeleteYou have the best estate sales in your area! Love the new chair. What a find.
ReplyDeleteClassic chair...
ReplyDeletefor reclining and relaxing and pondering life.
I echo Deb's comment about great estate sales...we have nothing like you find where you live.
Will people even bother to come by to our estate sale when/if we are "on the move" ?
What a darling chair and what a great price. I wouldn't have been able to pass it up either. It's adorable and perfect with that slip cover considering you have so many roses in your garden. Thanks for the congratulations. I was going to say something....but then I thought ..oh who cares? Nice to know...you do.
ReplyDeleteI'm coming out of lurkdom to ask this. What are estate sales?! I hear Americans talk about them all the time and I have no idea what they are? How do they work? Is it people just walking around a deceased estate, do you get charged to go in, how do they stop people stealing stuff?
ReplyDeleteSorry, so many questions. The chair is perfectly lovely, it looks at home already in that little nook.
hello cybill, here in california estate sales are held after a person has passed away and the family (if there is any) has taken what they want from the estate. a company that handles such affairs is called in and they price everything and arrange it for sale. there is no charge to enter. you just go in, take a look around and buy what you want. there is always a tinge of sadness to them but also it is very interesting to see how people lived.
DeleteHi Janet, I love that chair- it looks so good with the cushion too. And like the other commentors said, it is lovely because you grow so many roses.
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile I bought a black and white travel hat at lunch that folds up to nothing. Handy.
This is my last week at work. I am stressed to the factor of 1 million. xxxx
That pretty chair looks fabulous in your room! This post gave me hope, because I am in need of a pretty slipcovered chair for my bedroom and I refuse to pay retail for it.
ReplyDeleteThat chair is gorgeous, perfect for curling up with a mug of tea and a good book! You've such a great eye. xxx
ReplyDeleteI like things relatively simple, so I would never have thought to mix those prints together, but they look great in your space... perhaps because you don't have a lot of other busy elements. But still, good eye. Great chair! Enjoy!
ReplyDelete"Patience in 2nd hand shopping IS imperative.....and what story does (MY) house tell?"
ReplyDeleteBesides the incredible beauty of that chair, these two phrases shall linger in my mind today as (1) truth and (2) challenge.
That's brilliant, the chair and the pillow. The colors are so well-associated. Also so dang Janet:).
ReplyDeleteLovely:) a bargain and recycling, AND a reminder that life is fleeting. I hope that when I am gone someone has such lovely things to say about the space that makes my home.
ReplyDeleteLOVE!
ReplyDelete-Suzanne in Illinois
that is so lovely. it looks so serene and happy!
ReplyDeleteAnother great find, Janet! I love the floral with the stripe. I'm not sure what my apartment says about me. Hmmm, food for thought.
ReplyDeleteLove the new chair!! (Roses! What can I say.)
ReplyDeleteMy house says that I'm all over the place, and that I mix whatever I like together, whether convention says that it goes together or not. Mid-century modern chair with a colonial buffet, leather club chairs and a ruffly ottoman, all in an 1840s farm house ... of course!
Love your chair, and it looks perfect. What is that large piece of furniture next to it? I love that and would like to find one just like it!
ReplyDeletehere you go...although i see it is a full $500 more than when we purchased it 5 yrs ago.

Janet I love your voice! I haven't gotten into estate sales yet but I'm pretty sure I need to after seeing this post! I'm always trying to find second hand furniture (buying new can be expensive and the quality is often times lacking over my vintage treasures) where do you find out about estate sales? I love the chair you brought home and it looks great with that modern pillow!
ReplyDeleteI think the story my home tells is.... "carefully curated junk" most everything I own was a someone else's cast off in some way!

I featured this today at Mod Mix Monday!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE that chair, what a great find. The fabric goes so well with the cushion trellis pattern too. Jealous. xx
ReplyDeleteJanet,
ReplyDeleteI adore your new chair! It's just perfect! And with the modern pillow...even more perfect. I know what you mean about that feeling you get when you are in someone's house. Some definitely have positive happy vibes....I think mine does. It's filled with things that are all important to all or one of us in some small way. I can just imagine the feeling your house has...one of serenity for sure.
