organizing the house - part 4 the bedroom

So the last part in this house organizing series is the bedroom.  Ours is small but super comfy.  I know it sounds cheesy but it really is my refuge.

We don't keep any electronics in our bedroom.  Many scientific studies say that even charging cell phones in the bedroom is a bad idea if you want a good nights sleep.  My sleep is so precious to me that I try my best to make our bedroom like a cocoon, so no tv, computers or cell phones in ours. I've read that people will actually check their emails during the sex if their cell phone is nearby. Really? Really? REALLY.

Not much to report here.  I'm obviously not much of a jewelry person. I like it in theory but wearing it drives me mad.  Nothing like posting real life evidence of just how dull you are.

I keep my woolens in one drawer with lavender drawer liners and lavender sachets.  While they smell good they apparently do nothing to detract moths.  I have a lot to learn about storing woolens safely.  Here is some of the skinny on that.  Thank you anon reader who supplied that link.

This is the only closet in the house and I'm sure that if we called in a closet organizing company, it would give us more storage but I'd rather have less than figure out ways to make room for more.

I'll shut up about this any day now but participating in Project 333 pretty much changed the way I looked at my wardrobe.  I was always stuck on the buy, donate, buy, donate road and the Project helped get me off that bus. Now being able to look in the closet and drawers and be able to see everything easily and know that I feel confident and comfortable in every single thing...well it's pretty good.  April 1st starts a new season with the Project so if you are interested, check it out.

These are the baskets inside my armoire.  They hold 5 pairs of jeans, 2 pair of yoga pants, 3 yoga tank tops, a hoody and 3 t shirts.  The seasonal basket is a place for me to stick scarves, hats, etc. depending on the weather.  The beauty basket holds my Clairsonic charger, my small blow dryer, hairbrushes, etc.  Larry uses the 2 super large drawers below these baskets and hangs a few things in the closet.  Compared to him I am a clotheshorse.

So that is that.  Next month I really want to address what appears to be my addiction to the internet. I've been reading articles on how to reduce your time online and guess what?  You have to reduce your time online.  This will be way way harder for me than giving up wine or chips.  It's going to be very interesting. x

  1. What a beautiful lamp right next to your bed, that is just lovely. Agree on the no electronics in the bedroom. Have a good weekend - Spring has arrived in Northern Europe and we are looking forward to a sunny one

  2. I had the same thought about the lovely lamp, don't remember seeing it before but it is beautiful. for years I have kept my one TV in the bedroom. I have a small townhouse and the living room tends to be chilly, so in order to be cozy and watch TV I have there. the problem is of course that I fall asleep watching it and then it disturbs my sleep, intrudes on my dreams and I wake up with it still on, wasting power. was just telling my self this morning to try to do better!

  3. What a lovely, calm space. I didn't know about the research behind electronics in the bedroom but, other than Jon's radio alarm we don't have any either. Even the thought of a TV in the bedroom appals me and I hate mobile phones anyway, they are turned off when I go to bed. xxx

  4. You make simple living look so easy. Every time you post a new room I load up my car with more stuff for Goodwill and the animal shelter!

I just got home from a 7 day vacation with one small suitcase. It makes me realize we really don't need many material possessions and taking care of it all is a burden.

    Thanks for the inspiration!

  5. Okay, I'm totally worshipping your closet right now. Every corner of it. What a great idea to organize your jeans and t-shirts in woven baskets! I'd love to do project 333 this spring, although that means I need to organize my (messy) closet this weekend. Have a lovely weekend, Janet! ox

  6. I love this Janet! Given our weather, I've had to treat project 333 by season and I am almost there and feeling very happy about it indeed! I ought to be wearing heavier cashmere still (it's snowing again today for god's sake!) but I just can't so I wrap myself in shawls and blankets and walk around like Honest Abe in Lincoln! I am slowly going room by room and tossing and giving away. It's taking awhile, but oh-so-satisfying! well done!

Darby "anonymous" again. do you recommend the Clairosonic? was wondering if it is worth the investment or maybe ask for it as a birthday gift this Spring. my skin care routine is pretty basic and not looking for miracles at this point in life, but I am curious about it.

  8. No electronics but you sleep with an electric blanket. Seems counter-intuitive.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. i believe it is the lights that the electronic devices emit that interrupts sleep. economic-wise an electric blanket makes sense for us during the cold winter. the controller to the electric blanket sits under the bed so we can't see any light from it.

  9. I've never had a TV in my room (now our room) or phone or anything like that but can't live without my electric blanket, my very low blood pressure means I am freezing all of the time.Funny, I don't think of that as being electronic either, it's more in the lamp category although indeed, if we are splitting hairs yes that'll be a current that sparks it up.

    1. Oh Janet, I stash the light part under the bed too.

    2. haha. and i use it to heat the bed then turn it off when i get in it (so much warmer here.) but yes, i agree it is a spark.

  10. I have a story I could share. Haha but even I know sometimes some things are better left unwritten.
TVs are also bad feng shui (so I've been told), and to have that black hole sucking energy out of a room supposed to restore energy seems foolish. Not that it matters to me, as my phone charges inches away from my head on my bed.
Love your bed! And the fact that you have roses blooming! And that "woolens" is a word.

  11. Couldn't agree more about a serene bedroom - and time online. I turned my computer off after lunch - at the plug(!) to stop me using it, then a couple of hours later had something I wanted to look up, 2 hours later I'm still here.. It's a full blown addiction, so i will be tuning in to see what you find out about how to limit yourself.

  12. I'm struck by the details that add so much calm and beauty to your space: matching boxes for shoes instead of branded shoes boxes, handbag covers, perfectly sized baskets, and a wallpapered closet. As usual, I see your space and just go "ahhhh". I really think you should do this for a living because some of us just can't put this kind of space together.

  13. Thanks for your inspiration! I have enjoyed your organization series. Always nice to get new ideas. In regards to time spent online; I don't socialize outside of the home much at this time, don't buy magazines or newspapers, and work from home, so I am finding it wonderful to get inspiration from others (like yourself : ) and keep up via the internet. But as things go, there's always too much of a good thing, too. Question on the Clairsonic; do you recommend if for people with Rosacea? Any suggestions for calming Rosacea?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. i really don't recommend it if you have rosacea. you can purchase a *sensitive* brush for it but i really think it is too much for it.

as far as calming rosacea, all the things you've prob already heard and tried. avoid stress, avoid extreme temps, stay away from alcohol, be very gentle with your skin.

      if it's bad, see a dermatologist. :)

    2. Try Sea Buckthorn Salve at night....in addition to Janet's sage advice. It works for my rosacea and it is not too expensive either.

  14. Great attitude about the closet - have less rather than create space for more. I have that attitude about my apartment in general, but I should apply it to my closet specifically.
Getting unhooked from being online tip #1 - tell someone who you are around all the time that you are doing it. A little shame goes a little way when you don't want to be seen cheating.
Getting unhooked from being online tip #2 - set up an automatic reply message (sometimes called a vacation message) explaining to people that you won't be replying immediately. Mine says:
I have taken a step away from my all-distracting e-life.
I will check and reply to messages, but it won't be instantly, like we are used to.
Knowing that emails are automatically being addressed keeps me calmer about not needing to check them until later in the evening. And lastly, maybe set aside some time to hit all your favorite sites and sources so that you feel just connected enough.

I wish this series could go on and on! LOL. it's been lovely.
I too live very simply. I call it cozy minimalism.
I have been an ist for years. long before I knew what minimalist meant! I just like things elegantly spare and simple.
so if I must be any kind of ' ist ' ... I guess minimalist is the best kind! well... maybe philanthropist! that would be good.
and linguist. oh! i'd like that.
    OH STOP ME!
looking forward to your next ... getting over web and blog addiction. I NEED IT. xoxo

  18. Janet, I do not have a TV connection; instead, I use it as a fireplace, using a fireplace CD during the cold months. Like you, I'm online too much, but in the winter it is my only entertainment as I do not want to be out in the cold due to arthritis. At night when falling asleep I play natural sounds, like rain, ocean on iPod, docked in a Bose speaker, which is right by my bedside….that is an addiction! Love your bedroom and especially the photo wall, which is not included in this post but to me just makes the room.

  30. Janet, your room is so pretty...love that lamp! And that is just amazing that you and Larry fit all your clothing in that closet.

We don't keep any electronics of any kind in the bedroom. The only exception is that we do have to bring the cordless phone in our room at night in case there is an emergency w/ the in-laws.

Yes, I would say I have a bit of an internet addiction. My husband will say "there she goes again" when he sees me heading over to sit down at our desk where the computer is. Sometimes I find myself a little annoyed when he is on it too long because I have to wait my turn! (I think I have a problem) That said, I don't think I'm as bad as I used to be, with the blog reading that is. I have narrowed it down to a few favorites! Lately I've been on Ebay more since I'm trying to sell stuff, so at least with that I have an excuse. Can't wait to see your post on this topic.

    Have a great weekend!

  31. I used to spend hours on the internet reading lots of blogs, finding great decorating ideas, emailing lots of people, watching TV shows etc. Now, just like I'm paring down my things, I'm paring down my blog list to a few favorites (yours, of course) and setting a timer when I'm on the computer. Otherwise, I'm in the land that time forgot. My other rule for me is no exercise today, no computer time.

I totally agree on no electronics in the bedroom. That place is reserved for my two favourite activities, and checking my iphone is not one of them. Victoria

As far as the internet being "addictive," I think we all have to cut ourselves some slack-it simply is the way that our news/info is delivered now. When I used to get the newspaper, I would spend most of my evenings ( and half of Sunday!) reading/doing the crossword/clipping articles or coupons...now I can do it all on the laptop and keep it all much more organized. It's not better, really, it's just different.
