my summer bedroom

hello everyone.
i've sorta been missing in action.
my allergies have really taken a toll on me.  they keep me up pretty much throughout the night, which makes daytime quite dreary.  i have SO much gardening to do but i can only look at it right now.
i can't wait for all this pollen to die down.
thank you EVERYONE for your great suggestions.
so far the xclear and neti-pot are helping the most.

i've been bored so i cleaned out more junk and got rid of 1/2 of my jewelry.

i've been washing the sheets every 2 days seeing if that helps with the sneezing.

the roses are just for these photos.
just looking at them makes my eyes itch!

this is opposite the bed.  this is where larry stores his clothing and some of mine too.:)
those silhouettes are of me when i was about 12.  i paid for them myself at disneyland of all places!
my friends all bought mickey mouse ears and i bought these.

we are heading to los angeles in a couple of hours to see jack white perform at the wiltern.
i am so grateful that we got tickets.  it's a small theatre and sold out quickly.

i hope you are all doing well and i hope to be back to myself soon.

  3. Even at 12 your taste was impeccable. I love silhouettes and have a beautiful collection from my grandmother. Your bedroom is so beautiful, elegant, and serene. About your allergies ~ I'm having quite a time of it too, and have resorted (after trying every homeopathic remedy available) to Benedryl.
It's a very benign medication, with zero serious side effects. I think it's bad to be up all night, way worse for your overall health than taking Benedryl.
Have a great time tonight - wish we were going!

  5. Janet, I love your bedroom...very elegant and peaceful.

Do you wash your hair before you go to bed. A lot of pollen gets in the hair and right onto your newly washed linens.

  6. sweetie, I feel so bad for you. I've not felt well either but I think we have mold. ugh.

I hope you have THE BEST time ever tonight!!! Then you get to come home and sleep in that lovely bedroom...sounds like a heavenly night. xo

  7. Oh I empathize with you Janet.
Non drowsy formulas seem to take the edge off for me but staying out of the garden when the pollen counts are high is torture.

Those miniatures are so stylish and to think you were 12 at the time...
no wonder you are light years ahead when it comes to good taste you started early honing those talents.

    Hope you feel well soon...
    love your white bedroom.

One day we'll tackle ours and I plan to paint it white too.

  8. Thank you for the lovely, calm and pretty whiteness of your bedroom.
I absolutey love the silhouettes - I always equate them with good, refined taste.
Especially after reading The Next-to-Nothing House by Alice Van Leer Carrick (do you know this little gem?) She had a love and appreciation of silhouettes. You might like to check it out.
Here's to your better health, dear Janet - and to more sleep!!

  9. i will second kathy's advice about benadryl.
it will make a huge difference if allergies are keeping you up at night.
    {maybe just take it at night because it will make you sleepy}
really hoping you feel better soon, janet.

love the simplicity of your bedroom ~

  10. I am so sorry. How sucky to have the allergies esp. when you love to garden! Your room is so calming and summery, and I love the wall with all the pictures! Nice contrast! You know what I do when I'm bored? I cut my own hair!!! (not recommended) :>)

  11. First, I love your bedroom. So simple, elegant and bright. Second, I have been an allergy sufferer most of my life until the past few years. I believe allergies are cyclical and I've either adapted to the allergens that once triggered sneezing fits or something about my chemistry has changed. Anyway, when I am bothered by allergies I take Loratadine (generic Claritin). I've found it to be very helpful. It is more effective when you take it for a while rather than every now and then. I don't have any side effects from it. Hope you find some relief soon. Enjoy the concert!

  25. Sorry about those pesky allergies. When I can't stand my itchy, runny nose and constant sneezing, I finally succumb to taking Claritin. I detest taking pills but it really helps when I get desperate. One thing, take a nightly shower washing your hair to get the pollen off your head. When a friend offered this advice, I did that and it really helps, too. Sometimes, though, I am just too lazy...Twice the hair care the next am...to fix the bed head...
But the good news? I, too, bought silhouettes at Disneyland, for my 11th birthday, and I still have them!
Sweet memories of times gone by.

  26. Hi Janet, sorry to hear about your allergies. I can really relate--mine were debilitating for 7 years. Then my dr prescribed Beconase, an inhalant, and it changed my life. I just had to take it daily for one season and that was it. I know most of us don't like to do dodgy pharmaceutical stuff like this, but I was desperate and it worked. I've been hay fever free for 23 years now. KNOCK ON WOOD!!! Allegra

  30. Hello Janet:
We are so very sorry to learn that your allergies are still causing you a great deal of distress. We very much hope that, with the approach of June, the pollen will lessen and you will, as a result, feel more yourself.

Your bedroom, as we should expect, is absolutely lovely. And all the whites make it appear so cool and welcoming.

  34. Oh Janet, I hope you feel better soon!
We took the dogs for a walk on Sunday and let them off the leashes in a big quiet field and as a result, I spent the rest of the day with watery eyes and sneezing my head off! Plus I have this awful dry, raspy cough that I think is allergy triggered as well.
Your bedroom is stunning btw, and I chuckled because at 16 with purple hair that stood up in the air, I had MY silhouettes done at Disneyland too! I spent part of that summer in California and that is the Disney souvenir I chose to bring home with me.

  35. Ugg...allergies...my grandma used to say,”What can’t be cured must be endured.” Your white bedroom looks stunning. I do the same thing at allergy time, wash, white, no flowers etc. I think just looking at this beautiful restful white space helps me to feel better.

  37. Hello Janet!

My name is Jessica and, while I've been reading your blog regularly for the last couple of months, this is my first time commenting. I absolutely love your house and style, I covet your kitchen and have been influenced by your wardrobe as I cull my own. Thank you so much for sharing all this!

The reason I'm finally commenting is because I read an article about Jack White I thought you might like. Even if you've already seen it, it's a good excuse to say hello!

  38. Sorry to hear about those allergies, Janet! You've certainly used your time constructively. Your bedroom is stunning, I love the eclectic mix of pictures and that beautiful ceramic bird lamp. I love how you were a woman of discerning taste even as a tween, eschewing the Disney tat for those beautiful silhouettes.

PS didn't read the previous allergy comments but local honey taken daily is fabulous for allergies. My boss's life has changed dramatically but it took me TWO years to convince him. 42. Hi Janet, love the look of your bedroom. Your a lucky gal to live in an area where you can see the wonderful Mr. Jack White! We used to have a place called Konocti Harbor that put on concerts all summer long but it closed down two years ago. Blunderbuss is played constantly in our home~I can't get enough of Trash Tongue Talker! Hope you had a wonderful time! P.S.~I bought a promo poster for blunderbuss on e-bay now the hubs wants to decorate an entire wall in our hallway with rock posters and old album covers!

  47. Janet,

So sorry about those darn allergies...thankfully, I don't get them often but when I do I'm miserable. The worst is when my eyes feel too big for the sockets and the itching of my eyes/nose. I use a Neti Pot but sometimes the only thing that gets the nasal stuff to stop is to lie down so I'm horizontal!

    Love the pics!

  57. I know others mentioned the local honey but thought I'd add my agreement. Not sure how quickly it will help if you're already in the midst of the season, but definitely taking it before the season has helped me and my husband. He used to have an awful time and this year his allergies have been non existent after taking the local bee pollen all winter. I'd love to see a front on view of your picture wall in the bedroom. I love when people put together great collages of pictures.

  60. I've got one word for your allergy problems - homeopathy. Homeopathy is an all natural way of healing. It polietly and gently cures any ills. The best thing about homeopahty is that the remedies work. The next best thing about homeopathy remedies is there are NO side affects. Homeopathy remedies can be found in your health food store. Just ask for one that is best for allergies. A favorite website to learn more about homeopathy is Joette Calabrese's, www.homeopathyworks.net Check it out. Hope this helps.
