September Goals

Photo from September 2012

Good morning.  I have a list of goals for September that I'd like to share because making them public holds me to them in such a way that they will get done vs writing them down and forgetting about them.:)

1.  Get out into my garden, as it is a wreck.  Seriously.  It's been too hot to do anything but water for the past 2 months.  I have a ton of weeding to do.  Everything needs attention.  Trees need trimmed, bushes shaped, dead things need removed.

2.  I've been slacking on the inside too.  I have a lot I want to donate and that takes some letting go.  Letting go sounds so passive and easy but as we all know, it's HARD.

3.  Another thing I want to tackle is my wardrobe.  So many things are just not working any longer.  I don't know if it's the inside me or the outside me but things I used to love just aren't working and I have to address that.

4.  Since Larry has become vegan, I've been slowing cleaning out the pantry and refrigerator and I want to complete that this month.

5.  I want to get back into fitness.  This heat really puts a damper on working out.  So now that it is cooling I have no excuse.

What are your goals for this month?  Do share because maybe I need to add to my list!  xo

  1. I'm so glad you're posting more often! My goal is to eat better. Thinking of going vegan myself, but I'm not a creative cook.

    1. thank you brenda. well re being creative and being vegan you can leave that to the experts. there are so many excellent vegan cooking blogs now. my favorite is the simple veganista and you can find her up in my favorite bloggers link. her meals are really simple, you may have to buy some new ingredients and b12 drops but really i'm not that creative. we just eat the same 5-6 meals always on rotation:) x

    1. yes, that is enough. i remember trying to stay on top of my boys rooms. whew, that was a full time job! hope you are well too. :)

  3. My goal is to finish unpacking! We just bought/moved into a mid century fixer-sadly not a true mcm home with all those windows and cool features, just one built in 1951. We splurged on painting everything white-and it's glorious, even with all the boxes.

Fitness is always a goal, eh? Daughter is getting married in May-so I have a built in deadline lol.

Like you, I love in SoCal, and the HEAT with a capital H has been ridiculous until just now. No gardening/landscaping will be done here until November! We have heaps to do, too; I have one bougainvillea and one GIANT agave and that's about it. We have lots of potted things from our rental life so that's enough to make me happy for now.

My kids have been after me to write/document my "life story so far" and I am going to give that a whirl.

Moving is SO good for the soul that likes to purge-that would be me-and tortuous for the one who collects -that would be hubs. He's working on that daily.

TV Goal-Watch Highlander :) and VERY LITTLE NEWS

Goals are a good thing. I like nothing more that a great list and the ability to cross stuff off as items get finished-makes me think I have some sort of control over things that happen in the universe ( if ONLY!)

    1. wow susan you finally found a home! awesome. it sounds lovely. you are right, nothing like a big move to get you to declutter. also such a good time to reconsider everything! i love that part. i love that you are considering writing your story, that's such a great idea. this blog will be mine. lol i have not watched highlander and i only watch about 10-15 minutes of the PBS newshour. that's all i can take. i love having goals bc it keeps the focus on me rather than everyone around me. i need to stay out of everyones business! xo

  4. Sounds like you'll have a busy September! My main goal is the mold illness treatment program I've just begun. This is comprised of medications and supplements, a particular diet, exercise, some medical appointments and self-treatments (such as coffee enemas) as needed. Oh -- and Extreme Mold Avoidance, which means being at home or outside. Everything else is less important and more or less optional. Wow, maybe writing this down will help my focus!

  5. You are such a gracious woman Janet and a shining inspiration to your readers!

Rejoining the gym as I need to recommit to fitness and they also have Zumba classes and Yoga.
Losing some weight that I put on after eating potato chips almost daily since mom passed away...medicating with food is not a good plan but I did it anyway.
Once I get on top of these two I will attempt some other things...

    1. leslie you know that potato chips are my go to medicine! i've only done zumba once but it was a lot of fun. good luck and allow yourself time to grieve, i don't think it ever really ends, just gets a bit softer. x

  6. I have three main goals this month. The first is to read a book a week. I used to read all the time, but have fallen out of the habit. I've already finished one.

The second is daily yoga. My daughter and I find a month-long challenge on YouTube and both follow it. She lives in Hawaii and I live in Arizona, but this is a way for us to share something long distance and keep each other accountable.

My third goal is to live within a set budget for the month. Of course the air conditioner went out right after I set that goal. It's still over 100 here, so that cut into the budget a bit. Oh well, I have the rest of the month to be frugal.

    1. love your goals pearl. yoga and staying within budget are always on my list too. and isn't that the way it goes when committing to not spend? good luck! xo

  7. My goals to simplify, simplify and toss, toss, donate, toss, donate and toss some more. Also work on Christmas things so I'm not overwhelmed and can enjoy the season. LOVE your goals. And love how you say it helps to stay out of everyone's business because you have goals. I WANT THAT TOO! xoxoxo Jen

    1. jen, yes to the toss toss toss. i am in the midst of it myself. mostly my clothing/accessories. so much goes unused and then the things i wear daily are looking shabby or don't fit as well as they used to. so lots of work here to! and staying out of everyone's business is at the tippy top of my daily list. :)

  8. Janet what a motivating post! But you always inspire us :) I have about a million vegan recipes I want to try this month, I'm feeling a new interest in cooking now that we've gone 100% plant based. I'm re-decorating my daughter Gabrielle's room, that needs to be finished by the end of September so it's ready for Thanksgiving. I did a big declutter today but there's a bit more to do. I want to donate books to our library book sale and I'm also doing the Essentrics 30 day challenge this month, workouts every day.
I have a busy month with work too and I'm trying to get my filing systems under control. Something about September, it feels like a new year.
I hope you accomplish all of your goals this month! XX

  10. It has been an extremely HOT summer here too. I was uplifted to read from Simple Abundance, Sept. 1st that "since ancient times September has been viewed as the beginning of the new year, a time for reflection and resolution". . . .yes! I much prefer it over Jan. 1st. I finally took the advice of a blogger I follow and took everything out of my closet and purged. It really does make a difference!!! It does make me happy every time I look in there and I will continue to work on this and not shop mindlessly. Can you tell me what color you like in the Jane Iredale blush? As usual, love your blog!

    1. i love taking everything out of drawers and closets and thoroughly cleaning and putting back in. it's such soothing work for me. the blush color i use is Chemistry. i never used to wear blush but like i said, things are changing in me. as i age the color is def leaving my hair and face and now i use a little. jane iredale is sooooo good and i've switched over to her for lots of things that i used to buy in aveda. this blush can be used on lips too. and it goes a v long way - for me at least. i think you will love it. x

  11. We renovated 2 bathrooms and replaced carpeting with new hardwood in bedrooms (7 months). Upgraded closets. I loved the closets empty and now only put the things I actually wear in them. today I sorted sheets. I now have a stack to give away. Half empty is the look I am going for--in closets, cupboards, rooms etc. I think it will be difficult but worth it. In the fridge and freezer--half empty. would be nice.

    1. oh i love that half empty look. i remember i had it in my utah closet and it was such a joy. why do i clog things up here? ugh. i think they say a refrigerator runs more efficiently if the freezer is full so that that's something to look into. xo

  12. I love the change of seasons just for the motivation it brings! Yesterday was my wardrobe day--here in Wisconsin we can switch out early. I listed several things on eBay (hoping someone else can love them now). My youngest son is going gluten-free for health reasons--I'm already gluten-free and this is encouraging as I don't have to prepare two meals. So, I checked out several gluten-free cookbooks from our library system. Next week is a trip to Idaho to see my oldest son. Then on to Door County, WI to see the leaves change and have a good round of boutique shopping and hot coffee. :) Sometimes, I have to make a goal of traveling or just seeing the things around me or I struggle with the cold and clouds.

  14. I'm afraid to create to-do lists. I fear that I will then realize that all of the irons I think I've controlled to the fire have actually rolled out of it and set everything else a blaze! (kidding, not kidding)
With that said, I will say that I am hosting a gathering at my apartment on the 28th of September and I need to finish the new media room and my bedroom, as well as clean before then. So, that's on my immediate radar. You'll probably finding me crying over a hot glue gun and ribbon on the 27th wishing I had done it all sooner. (Not kidding at all - upholstered walls. Who's bright idea was that?)
    Good luck with your chores!
    xoxo,
    A

  15. So Hurrican Harvey decided he likes my roof and took that and left me with an entire upstairs of wet drywall. SO- had to move all I own downstairs. Good time to purge! And I really mean purge. We have been talking about downsizing to something smaller and more efficient. I figure my downstairs is about 1000 square feet, so this was a good time to figure out what I truly love and what I can let go of. So far, I have made 2 small piles. I have new things going to Hurrican families and the used stuff is going to a church. It feels really good. I never thought I could live with this little but I love it! My goals are to be done by October 1st with purging and hopefully, the house will be back together. I can deep clean and get this place ready to sell. Feel so good!

  18. Oh wow! Ditto from another Janet :). Want to really get yard and house ready for winter. I made a list this morning of projects that need doing. Also want to purge and agree about the wardrobe. Time passes so quickly, nothing gets done without a plan.

  19. Hi, I am new to your blog and am really enjoying it! My goals are to start decluttering (we have a tidal wave of stuff heading our way as our parents age and try to downsize. bleh. I cannot take the summer heat so have been a total slug about exercise so I need to get back into that. I think I would like to try a barre class. At 54, my metabolism has come to a screeching halt and I need to boost it a bit!
