getaway fashion

This past weekend we had the opportunity to zip off to Las Vegas for an extended weekend.  Mostly I was there for the Las Vegas Spa and Esthetician show, which was so good btw, but once that was a wrap we were free to do as we pleased. We decided to hop over to the Grand Canyon, as neither of us had seen it since we were children. What a spectacular place. We went to Grand Canyon West, just 2 hours from Vegas, to experience Eagle Point and the Skywalk. With a background of ancient Indian music playing, you take off your shoes and step out onto a glass overhang that I'm not ashamed to admit, scared me to death!  I'm not a fan of heights at all so you can imagine what it's like to look straight down 4000 ft while walking on glass. No cameras are allowed on the skywalk but they have photographers out there that will take a pic if you want.  Take a minute to look at the website and view the short clip for yourself right here.  It is breathtaking.

I chose to wear my Emerson Fry butterfly caftan and it was a good choice.  We were there early but it was still quite hot.  The lightweight cotton caftan kept me cool as a cucumber.

Our first night out I chose to wear this vintage Tori Richard for I. Magnin maxi dress.  Some of you may remember that I bought it back in 2013  at Miss Doris' estate sale.  All night I imagined her wearing it out to dinner with her husband sometime in the 1960's.

The next night I chose this 100% silk maxi dress from the 1960's.  It was made by Gino Charles for Bloomingdale's.  Again, some may remember it from the Palm Springs estate sale in 2014.  It was perfect for dinner with friends - I felt like princess wearing it. :)

Larry snapped this on our way back upstairs to our room.  For anyone interested The Delano used to be TheHotel at Mandalay Bay.  They've updated the interiors with lots of white.  It's drop dead gorgeous and if you plan far enough ahead you can get super reasonable rates.

All good things must come to an end and I wore the caftan home.  Even though Las Vegas is over-crowded, hotter than hell with traffic to match we still had such a great time.  Just the little mini break we needed.  xo

  2. You look fabulous in those vintage dresses and I love how you styled your hair in an updo!
I have never been to the Grand Canyon but by the look of it I might not navigate the walkways as I am rather scared of heights...
SAJ will probably compliment you on your hair and chic vintage gowns...will come back and check for his comment.

    2. Haha yes I do love your hair looks on this trip! Good call with the volume + maxi as it's very mod and fitting. I love that you've curated a collection of maxis in neutrals! I feel like those must be harder to find. So often the colors are so vivid. Of course I think you need to find at least one in coral or fuchsia! I did a wedding a few weeks ago and all the bridesmaids wore sort of casual lavender maxis. I loved that look.
Glad you had such a nice trip! What are your people like at trade shows? Do they go insane like hairstylists or is it still all herbal tea, soft music, and avoiding the sun at all costs? :) it's a roll of the dice if hairstylists in town for a show actually make it to the show.

    3. Haha yes those hairstylists are wild. This show in Vegas is split in 2. Hair on one side and skin on the other and the hair side is v loud! Lol. The spa side isn't as tranquil as you describe but the products for the most part are:)

I love vintage in all colors! I have one super 60s bright that I adore. I know I could find more if I went to the Rose Bowl swap more often but the prices are bigger too. I like to keep my clothing budget around $5. Lol

  7. Amazing dresses, Janet, and you've put together fab hairstyles to match. A big backcombed bob on one day and a classic updo to compliment that super-gorgeous dress the next. Shows what you can do with a good cut and great hair. Love your hair length too. Your kaftan looks pretty perfect too.
Great 60s vibe, I don't remember me having gorgeous dresses like that in the 60s ... but that maybe proves that I was there :-).
I was in the Grand Canyon in Feb 2008, it was thick with snow so no heat issues. The skywalk - not for me! You're brave. But does your pic show a man standing on the edge with no protective fencing? Yikes!!
I loved Bryce Canyon and Zion too.
    Great post.

    1. thank you dear PP. i almost always wear an updo after a big backcomb day bc it works best with kinda dirty hair or at least hair full of hairspray. i don't remember dresses like that from the 60's either except in magazines. oh how lucky you were to see the skywalk full of snow. the photos of that look amazing. i'm so impressed that you've seen it! bryce and zion are gorgeous too! xo

  8. Your hair is adorable. So glad to see you wearing the maxi you bought at Miss Doris', it is perfection!! It's so fun to read of the original purchase when you bought it, then to see you wear it and have the thoughts of a dear friend. That's what life is made of, lovely memories remembered and new ones made.

  12. I'm so glad you kept the silk maxi. Isn't that the one that at one time you said, oh, I don't know why I bought this and had pretty much decided you'd move it along although it was essentially like brand-new? All your maxis look terrific on you and maxis are so IN this summer. Perfect resort wear. You and Larry NEVER look like grandparents; you look VERY young and vibrant.

Are you guys hot in Redlands like us up here in the northerly reaches from you? I am getting really sick of 90-degree temps every day and i'm not even inland (not by much anyway). My husband just painted the porch room off the back of the house and the paint is setting up too fast in the heat before he can do the next stroke.

  13. You look like a far gone beauty from another era. Full of class! Remind us Janet, did you have to tailor these estate dresses? They fit you like a glove! I'm especially fond of the T Richard dress. I love how you wear it and think of Miss Doris. I mean, how can you not? The picture of you and Larry....love....such a handsome couple you are!

    1. hi emily. thank you so much, you are way too kind. no, neither dress had to be altered, i was so lucky! the t richard/miss doris dress is a tiny bit tight in that waistband which hits my ribcage but not unbearable for a night out.:) thank you re the couple compliment too. you are so sweet E. xoxo
