lavender scented bath salt

I was intrigued at the .99 cent store with their lavender scented epsom salts.  I had a big bag of plain epsom salts and decided to make my own.  It was easy.  I just filled a big jar with the salt and added about 2 Tablespoons of chopped fresh lavender.  I sealed the jar and within 24 hours the scent was amazing.  I use about 2 cups per bath.  Epsom salts have a long history of being detoxifying and also soothing to sore muscles.  The store bought scented salts have a heavy perfume scent to them and I'm not of fan of that. There is one drawback besides wanting to take 3 baths a day...after the water has drained the residual bits of lavender remain but i'm ok with that b/c one, it's a small price to pay and two, another bath is just around the corner.

Enjoy.

  1. What a fab idea. Along with weeds lavender grows freely in my garden! x

  2. I'm wondering if you could put the salts in a sachet for the bath, that way there are no lavender bits to clog the drain.

  3. What a great idea, Janet! I wonder if this works with dried lavender - I have a bagful from last year's harvest!

  4. Thanks for this blast from the past--in my Earth Mother days (late '70's-early '80's), I did exactly this, add fragrant herbs and flowers to epsom salts, garlic infusions, herbal teas, etc. It was so nice. Then I ran out of time, it seems, to make nice things like that. Or maybe it was energy I ran out of. Will see if my lavender survived this winter's 70 inches of snow (there's still 45 inches out there in the garden), and if it did, will make a point of making a batch of lavender bath salts a la Janet :)

  5. Wonderful idea. I love epsom salt baths but never thought to add fragrance to the salts. I'll bet it would make a great gift idea, too.

  6. I don't mind the bits in the bath, but what about the bits that stick to your wet skin. Or aren't you troubled by that?

  7. More than anything, I love the pics! So pretty! What a lovely gift that would make, maybe with a nice bath mitt or hand cream or a paperback OR MATCHING OLIVE OIL for your skin in a pretty bottle? Ty for....well, being creative!

  8. Hoping my lavender plants made it through the rough winter we are having....had! If so, I am definitely doing this. I love the scent of natural lavender. Thanks for posting this!

  9. Lovely idea...I am a fan of Epsom salts too and have used them for years. Did you know that roses love them too? Sprinkle a handful at the base of each rose and gently mix them in around the roots. They will reward you with lovely blooms!

  10. This is going straight to my list I'm making for homemade Christmas gift ideas. I don't know why I never thought before to do this. It gets so pricey buying it and bath salts/bubbles are a splurge I will never give up. :)

  11. I just had a delicious lavender chamomile bath with a bath bomb from Lush. It was the best gift I've received in 2 weeks. I'm not in pain at the moment, and if you've benn living in my body you would know what a miracle this is.

Let's hear it for the herbs.

  12. Lurve my lavender. I'm a fan of lavender sugar as well. For a scrub or for baking. Can't believe you can cut from your lavender right now! At least mine is no longer buried in snow.

  13. A bath is so therapeutic. It washes away all the stresses. I love a good soak in epsom salts.
One thing I shall always be thankful for is our .25 tub from waterworks, as part of my addition for our master bath.
The tub was a floor sample and 1/2 the price. Best investment ever. You are welcome to bring your potion here and use my tub. This is another thing you could sell.

  14. I love this. And what lovely ideas for Christmas gifts. I can see lavender bath salt bags as stocking stuffers, or pretty glass jars filled with bath salts as a little gift. Okay, Janet. Now I have to start a little spiral notebook with your fabulous ideas!

  15. Wonderful recipe, and it would make a fabulous, pretty gift!! I swear by good old fashion (inexpensive) Epsom Salts but haven't tried using two cups. Why not? It's affordable enough. I usually just use it plain and add lavender or rose essential oil, but this looks so much prettier. Enjoy your weekend. Just turned my kids on to the 99 cent store where they live. They're so grateful for your recommendation. xoxo
