round mirrors

just a quick post today to see what you think about this round mirror i got at the *epic estate sale*
(as soon as i get everything photographed i'll tell you all about it)
it's an antique and i had no idea where i was going to put it but for $22 i had to get it.
i gave the chalkboard to alex who needed it for work and now i feel like this area has grown up a little.

it is all sort of awkwardly good.

have a beautiful week.

was it a movie star's estate sale?

    Happy Monday! xo

  11. I have that mirror - from my Mother in Law's house, only it's not gilded. I'm gold leafing it now!!

  12. Look up 'a breath of fresh air' in the dictionary and there's a picture of your dining room.

The mirror is lovely and adds just the right amount of glimmer. Perfect.

  17. I love round mirrors and that one is divine! I love, love, love it! I am a sucker for anything old and gilded! I can't wait to see the rest of the pics! You have two of my favourite books out on the table! I think the mirror looks perfect where you have placed it. Burberry and now this. Oh my goodness - best estate sale EVER!

  18. Kerplunk! The sound of me falling over as I look at this room once again. You know it has always been my very favorite room from blogland. Of course the mirror is perfect in there. xo

  19. Absolutely love the mirror! But what is the little cabinet sitting beneath it? I don't remember seeing it before. (And isn't is just a little scary that I know your dining room that well?) :)

  20. I think it is the perfect addition. I think it's a tiny bit high... And I personally might consider lowering it, but its not necessary. Either way, it was meant to be in your home

    1. i totally agree with you lisa. just a smidge too high, like and inch! but i wanted my record player lid to clear the mirror so that is where we decided to hang it.

  23. I just bought a rectangular one when we were up in Portland( mine was 55.00)-
love your round one as well!

It's Gesso, no doubt-and you got quite the bargain, too-see a similar one here:

  26. Every time I see this room, I try to analyze why I love it so much. Of course, it's the perfect mix, too many good things to list, but I'm struck by how much those curtains, a beautiful, neutral pattern, adds to it. Love the mirror, love it all.

  27. I love it! Round with square and rectangles is such a relief.

  28. That mirror is the perfect addition. I love everything about your dining room!

  29. It's interesting to see how a shape can change the atmopshere in a room. The rectangular mirror is quiet, whereas the round mirror interrupts the ... silence.

    ReplyDelete
  30. THAT is a GREAT mirror! The round shape is just what that corner needed, and you didn't even know it!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Love the mirror! I agree it's more sophisticated but I rather liked the idea of the chalkboard and the quotes that you wrote on it. I like it so much in fact that I put one up in my kitchen and put inspirational or funny quotes on it like you did. Maybe you could continue that with a smaller version moved into your kitchen or little back hall area?

  32. Would you hate me if I asked you to try switching sides with the rectangular mirror and the circular? I love the alternation of round/square mirrors. I want to go to an epic estate sale! Those are a rare find. I came across one a few years ago at this incredible mansion of a family who had lived there for four generations. I bought the entire blue and white collection en masse. The woman selling the items ended up becoming a client of mine and we later realized I have the same birthday as her great grandmother who assembled the collection!

    1. A round mirror behind the round topiaries would be too much round. I think the mirrors are fine just the way they are now.

    2. I know what you mean. I just thought it might be interesting to see the smaller mirror with the higher table and the larger mirror with the lower sideboard.

    3. stephen i get your point but my record player is sitting on top of the little cabinet and the lid is usually open so i think the round mirror is the better fit. actually it's all just a hodgepodge but you know what i mean?

    4. Yes, definitely! Of course you know how much I love your style :)

  34. I'll miss the chalkboard and the quotes!

  35. Me, too - but a chalkboard like that would be perfect in the kitchen - to start the day with an upbeat quote that everyone will see first thing in the morning.

  36. I love this. I have a gold framed mirror and somehow it just seems to work in my funny mixed up house.

Yours is just perfect and round.

  38. Can I go off topic for a moment (I already commented above about liking the terrific mirror; I think it's a real statement piece!).

At the risk of having you repeat just for me, I would really love to have you post about what you eat over a couple of days. I'm very intrigued over your mindful crossover to a healthier lifestyle for your body, mind and surroundings. I'm trying; I've just got to do it. I mean, you look really great. I'm in the same age group, and I don't. I just had a meeting yesterday with a woman who is 64 years old and she could pass for 40, I am not kidding...ultra-thin, long legs, cute heels and mini skirt, darn long hair (red and blonde) that did not look inappropriate to her face and age. I feel dumpy in comparison and don't want to feel that way. I've tried to scroll back thru your archives to stumble on some of your secrets other than your wry sense of humor and cool style...do you meditate? I know you garden, obviously. How do you relax...music no doubt? Do you have a regular exercise regimen? I yearned to ask the dynamite-looking lady yesterday but it wasn't the right setting (she's an attorney!) because the atmosphere didn't lend itself to casual conversation. Anyway, for those of us who aren't rich celebs or debutantes, what are some good tips to be a woman of a certain age NOT letting age define her except to say it's a wonderful time in life and she feels amazing like maybe she never felt when age 20? You seem to have a good handle on things...give me a summary. I need a good start. Thanks.

    2. Hi Vicki! sorry, I can't provide any useful answers, just wanted to let you know how much I like these questions you ask: "How do you relax...music no doubt?" Relaxing might be a good point to start with., stress shapes our posture, our face and mimic ...

'curious to read what Janet has to say!

    3. hi vicki and paula. vicki if you go to my labels at the bottom of my blog you will find the category food and that has everything i eat. or you can go by date to the archives and look up november 2012. during the month of november i tried to post every day at least one meal that i was eating. you can also click on *beauty* and read my steps to beautiful skin. i do meditate and also do yoga and walk, hike, garden, ski, play tennis, bowl, have dinner out with friends once a week, have friends over for dinner once a week, experiment in the kitchen with vegan cooking, clean house, do laundry, read, read, read, watch very little tv, love movies though. while i stay busy, i generally find all my activities to be very relaxing. i'm passionate about all my interests and maybe that makes a difference, i don't know really. it's just the way i live. does this help? i'll try to do a post on this subject. thanks for the lovely compliments!

    4. Okay, thanks, I'm drinking all this in; thanks for pointing me back in the archives so that I can do "research." Looking forward to the additional posts on this theme. Appreciate the reply. Congrats on getting it together and being a good role model.

  39. Janet, Love how you created "Vellum" books by simply removing the paperback covers from your books! I, too, think the mirror is a great addition to your space. For about a year I searched for a large painting for my living room and recently realized a large mirror would work as a substitute until I found the right painting. It turns out it works, perhaps even better, as the reflection changes according to where you are positioned in the room, creating "art" in the reflection of light, an object, a tree, etc., always changing. Mirrors always add to a room.

  43. Hi Janet. I really enjoyed your chalkboard, and always looked for the new quote. I must say, however, that the mirror is beautiful, and looks perfect right where it is. I like your mix of shapes. Really lovely. Hope your son is finding the mirror useful.

Happy Easter to you and your family. Finally - spring...

  44. I don't understand why you would want to rip the covers off books in the name of "style"

But then I also don't understand why you feel the need to show your room to the world,to have to ask the world if this mirror is right, do you actually "live" in that room or are you afraid to sit in there in case you crease a cover or horror of horrors leave a mark on something. Are you one of those people who want your visitors to soon leave so you can obliterate all traces of them having been there?

Then I read back through previous posts - ha ha ha What a Poser.
