essential fashion tips for men & women over 50

remember these awesome boots?

you can read the story of how they became mine here.

imagine my surprise when i was contacted by that girl's people who wanted to use this photo of me in an article about being over 50 and wearing leggings.

i said sure and then later worried...what if i was gonna be a don't?

thankfully i was not.

you can see the slideshow and see what tim gunn has to say.
btw, i had no idea who tim gunn was but i now know he is a genius.

see the slideshow here.

i really like his opinion on hemlines.

yesterday my sweet sister took me to lunch.
i had brown rice covered in yummy vegetables.
the portion was huge so i took it home and had it for dinner.
i did not get a photo of it so you are going to have to trust me on this.

have an exquisite day.

  1. Funny, he would have to pay me to wear skirts above my knee nowadays, I much prefer to cover my knees, I don't believe in these "one size fits all rules"

    1. i was actually surprised by his advice to show the knee. i guess i'm just happy when someone goes against the standard advice, esp when it comes to women.:)

    2. Me too, Tabitha. No way these knees are seeing daylight, lol!

  4. I loved that outfit when you first posted it - how cool that you were included! As for the skirt/dress length, I also don't necessarily agree, but think it is a personal choice. I do think that slim skirts that fall below the knee and are worn with high heels can be very sexy and not dowdy.

  5. You rock! What a role model-although I am probably older than you. Is there nothing you can't do and make look great? It's those perfect little touches that take things from dull, frumpy or matronly to WOW!

  6. Sorry for adding more but I am awestruck...all that style while being minimalist, vegan and thrifty!

  7. You're a star!

I love the Oscar Wilde quote to "Be yourself. Everyone else is already taken." You exemplify that.

  8. You look great, Janet, although I didn't think too much of some of Tim Gunn's other examples. Like you, I wear leggings, but only with the backside under cover!
On the skirt length debate I always hated to show my knees but have just lately reached the don't care stage. Shaping up to my seventh decade so I think that it's time to do whatever I please!

  9. Tim Gunn has been doing some good work.

Joshua Katcher interviews Tim Gunn for the Discerning Brute blog. Joshua wrote:

"Tim is an outspoken advocate for animals used in the fashion industry, and calls for responsibility and accountability from every single person using or wearing the skin of an animal - whether it is fur, leather, or wool."

  11. Wow, that's awesome! You look amazing of course, you would never be a "don't"!

I love Tim Gunn because he is a realist and doesn't expect people to follow trends or be someone they are not. He has sensible advice that works and his approach is that of a fashion insider, yet approachable and friendly.

  24. As Tim Gunn would say "Carry On!!"
Project Runway continues to be my very favorite show, and one of the reasons is TG!
You look fabulous, as always Janet.

  25. Tim Gunn is sooo fabulous, you have to watch a few seasons of Project Runway to truly get to know him and hear his sage advice. There are too few people like him in the world. And as he always says to the PR contestants - "make it work!" And Janet, you definitely do make it work regarding fashion, food, your home, budgeting, etc. I think that is why you have so many faithful readers. But OMG, TIm Gunn, that is just so cool! And Marlo looks amazing too.
