april garden

did you all have a nice weekend?  good.
we spent saturday in the garden.

winter kinda passed us up this year and i've been a bit worried about the garden.  we don't have a sprinkler system, so i have come to rely on winter's heavy rain to deeply water my garden to prepare it for the long hot summer.  so i was pleasantly surprised to find things growing.
like everything else i always worry about, things have a way of working themselves out.
so here are some pictures of what is growing now.
enjoy your day!

  1. The flowers on my trips to SoCal stop me in my track every time, all year round blooms, what a gift.

  2. Good morning, Your garden looks heavenly.

I thought of you this weekend as I slogged away knee deep in mulch.

    Those roses are just beautiful.

But what would happen if we didn't worry incessantly?

    Wouldn't the earth stop spinning?

  3. Can you do a follow about olive oil for the skin? I am an olive oil fanatic and want to know how it worked out for you. Do you still use it for (externally) for your skin?

    1. yes, i'm still using it as a body moisturizer and love it so much. i have not started using it on my face so i can't report on that.

  4. So beautiful!
I'm worried about our garden too and it's the same issue: no winter. Then it got really warm and then cold again. We've had very little precipitation as well. We'll have to see what happens, but you're right it will probably work out fine.
Thanks for starting our week off with so much beauty!

How wonderful this post is for not only confirming the arrival of spring but also heralding summer. Lovely.

  6. Those roses look wonderful, is your garden very sheltered...???
The colours are soooo vibrant, I just love them!
I float my rose petals in running bath water, smell dive!

    1. it is somewhat sheltered as there are many fully grown trees on the property. the roses get just enough sun, a little more would probably be better.

  7. Lovely photos, Janet. We have had quite a bit of rain up here in the northern part of California as well. I wasn't liking the warm and dry winter we had..so odd. Am relieved we are finally getting the wet and chilly weather we missed out on a few months ago.
    Have a wonderful Monday!

  8. I am swooning over your garden Janet!

Your season is so far ahead of ours...
the daffodils and hyacinths are blooming but the roses will be a few months away.

I am a worrier too...my family tease me about it but I have never been able to stop.

Your garden is so inspiring! Don't you find gardening therapeutic? Do you have a favorite type of rose?

  19. Janet,
I love seeing your garden! I can't believe you have roses so early. That first one is my favorite. Is it called "Double Delight"?? I know you've shown us some "before" shots of your garden and so it gives me hope for my new garden. Yours is absolutely lovely and the perfect backdrop for all your fashion posts!

  21. lovely! i, too, spent most of saturday in the garden, cleaning out garden beds, adding compost, placing a bird bath (which i'm hoping our bees will use). and was so delighted when it rained on Saturday night! did you get rain in redlands?

  22. So pretty Janet. I was worried about the garden too with the warm dry winter. It's looking pretty good here too. I think I'll do a post about my April garden too. Do you have a fountain that you've never told us about?... Looks like a beautiful fountain in the background there--do tell!

  23. Just beautiful Janet. Roses already, wow!
We've had a dry winter here in England too. So much so that where we live in is in drought and later this week we won't be able to use our garden hoses anymore. We'll be getting creative and saving as much water as we can for use on the garden.

  24. WOW WOW Everything looks so fresh and beautiful. How many roses do you have?

  25. When I worry about nature, which unfortunately I sometimes do, I try to remind myself of how a little weed or blade of grass can actually grow up through a crack in concrete. That always puts me in awe. :-)

    1. Then again, when I SEE that weed or blade of grass sticking out of the crack in the concrete, I also know that I don't WANT that weed sticking up in the middle of my drive way.
So I pull it out--Still in awe and regard for the living thing-- but I yank it right out.

  27. Janet, your garden AND photos are your garden are both lovely. What do you use for your paths? Do you spend much time weeding? I have a good size yard but seems like all I do is pull weeds. Spent about 3 hours out there today, you can barely see the results of all my weed removal. Your garden appears to be so well maintained...

    1. we have used small pea gravel for paths in the rose garden. pulling weeds is a part time job here and it really should be a full time job. for some reason weeds don't bother me like they used to. if you saw this garden in person, you'd see that it isn't really well maintained.

  28. So pretty. That yellow iris is fabulous. I'm particularly fond of irises. We have the small purple ones in our garden. Thanks for sharing your garden with us.

  29. Jannneeettt!!!!!!! Love it all. I think your garden has changed from when I 1st started reading circa Dec 2009. is that a pale yellow clivia? I only have orange and they are 30 a plant. Crazy. I am dying of ill health here. Seriously, how do invalids cope? Awful to the factor of 10 million. And in other news I amd feeling every inch my age x

  31. Lovely!
Like everyone else I also spent the past weekend in the garden, and I also am worried about the coming summer after not having had more than 3 days of winter. Our rainy season is in the summer, so I'm keeping all fingers and toes crossed that we get our normal supply (not too much, Mother Nature...please?)of it this year, because I suspect it's gonna be scorching hot.

  32. All your plants look happy and healthy - time to stop worrying, Janet! I love the photo of the iris, so prettily rimmed with colour and spotted with rain drops. I've started gardening like mad in the veg garden and am wishing for rain to fill all my tubs and butts. (I know, I know, when it comes I'll be wanting it to stop!)

  35. Such beauty. Due to time constraints, I stick to a green on green landscape (hostas, ferns etc) that requires minimal attention and add the color to my window boxes. But how I love to look at a pretty garden! It makes me want to invite myself over for a glass of wine!
