mind your manners

rrl workshirt, talbots skirt, coach sandals, copy kate bag, julie lorusso pearl bracelet

while i was out on my morning walk, someone left me this comment on my last gardening post...

"This is where you belong. Leave the fashion to the experts."

to which i say...ha.

unless you as a majority would prefer i stick to gardening.

  1. I say mind your manners, too. My Mom always said that if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. I like your blog and you can wear whatever you like and it is fine by me.
Having turned 70 last year, I don't really care what others say - I wear what I like, and if I want to wear pearls everyday - so what. I am not hurting anyone, nor are you. Peg

  2. Actually, the style bit is just as much why I love your blog as your beautiful house, garden and recipe posts. Please stay as you are and don't let someone who isn't you influence you too much!
So enjoying your roses (another month to go here!), your home and project 333 - such an inspiration.

  3. "Mind your manners" is one way to say it. I can think of some others too, but I wouldn't think of posting them on this lovely blog, which I enjoy so much. Your style -- in your wardrobe, your home, your cooking and presentation, and your garden -- is fabulous. Please keep sharing all of it. It's a shame these unhappy souls can't keep their nasty thoughts to themselves.

You are an inspiration, Janet. Keep the fashion and the blog posts coming ...

  4. I call that "pooping on a blog".

Janet, I LOVE your fashion. They are my favorite types of posts on TGC. Your fashion is REAL fashion. And you are a real person who is pretty to look at, fashionable, and a savvy, mindful shopper. Best of all, your style is attainable and wearable.

My blog has been pooped on a few times, too. I clean it up and move on, but it still stinks.

    I can't stand Internet snotters.

And, for the record, I love your personal style.

  10. That comment would only make sense to me (and would still be unkind to send), if you were telling young cutting-edge fashionistas how to dress for the front row etc. That might be pushing it a teeny bit! But you are showing your style, how you dress now, what you like at this point in your life - what on EARTH could be less objectionable?? 'Nowt as queer as folk' as they say over here (hope that translates ok?!). Delighted you are taking no notice.

  11. Dear Janet - your dress, garden and home styles inspire me and I have just ordered one of Julie bracelets based on your pics. Keep your updates coming please:) These Easter holidays my "new life" project is to try 333 on my wardrobe for winter.

  12. What a rude thing to say. Besides, there are no experts any more. And, it's your style, across all spectrums, that I enjoy. Whether it mirrors mine or not at any given moment.

  14. Janet,
The top of your blog clearly states "simplicity, vegan cooking, gardening and style" Sorry, person, we get the whole package with Janet, and that is a good thing!

  15. Well, this post did not go as I expected! I saw the pictures and thought "I have to comment on how stylish this woman looks!" Then I saw the comment you got on another post. Though your gardening is fantastic (that rose garden!), I'd say your outfits are wonderful too! Especially this one - it's not only stylish, but very "you" (well, as much as a random blog following internet stranger can know "you"). Keep it up I say, you obviously have a lot of readers (me included!) who love exactly what you post now. :)

Please keep talking about everything you love. That includes everything in your header and more.

  27. I don't care for expert's opinions either.

Regarding today's posting I am a bit puzzled. Is this a provocation?
The belt together with the quilted seam of the skirt and then the shirt, I don't know ... It does not quite add up. My choice would be a simple white tee or a even a white shirt, but with a much thinner fabric than the RL shirt, to prevent the bulkiness.
But as Black Sheep sing: The Choice is Yours!

Maybe I focus to hard on the conservative style, with the Royal Wedding getting closer. I call the bride's style rather boring than thrilling (referring to her appearance). Still I fancy the Kingdom Boredom.

  29. I concur with Polyvorina. I was looking at the pictures and thinking, "What a great outfit!" and was really shocked when I got to the bottom. All the elements of your blog are inspirational to me, and I enjoy all of your posts, whether they be on your latest outfit, your beautiful home and garden, a recipe, or a tour of your local library. Don't change a thing!

  30. i agree with you paula re the seam on the skirt. after i viewed the photos i pulled the skirt a bit higher and hid the seam. it looked a lot better and was not too short. that's the beauty of photography, seeing what works and what doesn't. but i do love the lightweight chambray with it.

  31. Janet,
Even in a still photo you look as though you are dancing a little :)! You look very happy and very adorable, and I say since it is your blog - do what you want and don't worry about anyone else! Keep up the good work!

  35. No freaking way??!! This is what sets you apart and makes your blog so special.

We can go to any gardening blog and see what is blooming when.

But they can't tell us what to wear in the garden how to arrange the roses and where in their beautiful house to place the arrangements. but you can and do.

    Forget them.

  37. Janet, Keep doing what you do.....I love the way you do your blog, especially because it's you, your ideas, perspective and you are a good writer. I am sure this comment was out of jealousy because you are so interesting, inciteful, real, and unpretentious and so many other good qualities. The whole blog, fashion & everything is what captivated me the first time I read your blog. Honestly, don't listen, I would be at loss if you did and I just don't want to go there! Thanks for sharing all that you do.

  42. When you garden, you might get a little mud stuck on the bottom of your shoe. You wash it off and forget about it. It doesn’t diminish your love for the flowers.

I have just finished reading all your posts from the beginning and I can only say thank you from the bottom of my heart. I truly appreciate the time and work you put in to make this community.

I love the simplicity, the recipes, the gardening, and the style. I have learned so much from you and also from the wonderful commentators. 53. OK...Let me see if I have this straight:
    1. Stick to gardening? Why? Because a naive reader suggested it? Oh, yes, now that's sooo logical.
    2. Leave "the" fashion to the experts? Why? Because today's experts say "throw out the rules" when maybe we should be questioning if some of them truly KNOW the rules? Well, a snotty nosed crayon drawing is not equivalent to Cubism...OR in keeping with the commenter's style of writing maybe I should say--"the" Cubism-- HA. :-)
It's as simple as this: If a person wishes to throw out a comment, so be it. That's what "Post a Comment" is for, but unfortunately there are some YAHOOS in this world. If no one knows what a yahoo is, read GULLIVER'S TRAVELS...or...do the unintellectual thing and Google it. ha. (Love the "ha" by the way) Please don't stop the fashion posts; the majority definitely wants them. Just continue being the true lady that you are. Today's outfit is perfect. -Suzanne in Illinois.

  55. Experts have a prolonged or intense experience through practice and education in a particular field. In specific fields (say fashion), the definition of expert is well established by consensus and therefore it is not necessary for an individual to have a professional or academic qualification for them to be accepted as an expert.

Settled. You are an expert. Next case.

  61. Going by the number of comments you receive after every post Janet I would say this blog has a devoted following who appreciate the content and love you to bits.
This is the downside to blogging and forums etc whereby many folk feel the need to express an opinion with little to no civility or comprehension of others' feelings.
Ditto the old saying....'if you don't have anything nice to say then don't say anything at all'

I don't dress like Janet, nor am I a vegan or likely to become one, but I read this blog because it's entertaining and real.
